well yeah, it feels that past ~9months devs cared about some fancy textures and shiny shitty explosions combined with poor attempt of making this game "noob-friendly" - timers.

That's true. We can use it for as long as the game's in alpha, which it still is.

Reflex doesn't have textures, it has meshes.

Timers are now available only in casual and experimental rulesets. In the competitive ruleset, they are disabled.

In past 9mos, devs have worked on and added a lot of things. The addition of the rulesets was a huge step but other things have been added. See the developers roadmap on the official Reflex forums for a list of upcoming updates that include:

-Matchmaking
-Training mode
-Gameplay "mutators"
-Enhanced stats and replay features
-Widgets (Lua scripts) via Steam workshop
-New player/weapon models/animations
-More race mode features

I guess you're entitled to feel however you want. However, I feel your feelings are unfounded.

Meshes are used in place of textures and might AS WELL be called textures. You're right, they're not 2D textures but they fit the definition of textures just as much. They look horrible at a distance because you can't mipmap them like you can 2D images. Better yet, you can't even picmip them off so you're stuck with eye cancer unless you're using anti-alias which in turn fucks up performance for many. Going for the picmip style this way defeats the purpose of picmip style.

Mappers do not need to use meshes everywhere and will need learn to use them in a way that does not distract or cause issues for players. This is true for any mapper for any game trying to make a competitive map. You can't fill a map full of distractions expect it to be widely played.

There's already lots of Reflex maps that strike this balance, imo. They manage to look good and keep visibility high.

I agree that IF TurboPixel had the resources to make Reflex with all the bells and whistles that a AAA title could have in terms of visual assets, that'd be preferable. But the devs have had to balance their time and I think they made the right choice. It's not "omg this is perfect and couldn't be better", but it's certainly better than some alternatives.

Floor mesh "textures" like this are being used in almost every map and they look absolutely horrible in distance especially if you're using performance friendly settings. Oh and that's another issue entirely, Reflex looks absolutely horrible unless you're playing it on max settings pretty much. To give a few examples: Turn off dynamic lights and the mapper efforts on visibility will be all gone instantly. Turn the resolution down a bit and things will look exponentially jagged even in shorter distance.

With 2D textures and mipmapping, Reflex team could have easily made the game look and perform better - two flies in one strike. But instead they went with a more realistic look that demands high detail and realistic mesh objects which also would have demanded a lot more texture work. This is not a decision made to save time, this is a direction they had to take after putting so much work into a time consuming style which was unrealistic to a team of their size in first place.

That's a good example of where a mapper shouldn't use busy meshes everywhere.

I do use all low settings for max FPS. I'm a high picmip player in Quake and do not think there'smuch of a visibility issue on most (well designed) maps.

Now you're just sounding apogoletic. If mappers are restricted this much then that should be a red flag for something being wrong, as good as the game otherwise may be. I mean for fucks sake, if "textures" look like shit at 5 meters distance, that's just pathetic. If you look back at Quake1,2 and 3, maps with visibility issues were almost a rarity. You had to deliberately fuck something up, leave out mip/light/shadowmaps or whatever to make them look bad.

i bought reflex during the steam sale and i think it looks really good; especially some well done maps like skytemples or monolith

it is an arena fps after all and i think the simplistic design works perfectly

I get the point here I am a fan of lowpoly aesthetics but well from a design point of view the stuff doesnt work. It looks disjointed and disintegrated.

Maybe if you buy your computer only for playing computer games, I got ~30-60fps when I played it and bluescreened every few minutes. I never have problems in anything else.

Not to mention a LOT of that is community made.

Only critic I have is that the video quality (on 720p60) is quite low and the volume difference between music and game is confusing.

Some really good frags, but everything else (aesthetics, editing, music, etc...) was really shoddy. Not sure why people are trying to defend it /shrug.
