This is kind of a naive sentence. A clockwork orange is an amazing book and an amazing film. Shining is a mediocre book and an amazing film. I agree that on themes like "300, alexander, troy, some romain movies" it's better to read a book, considering how shitty those movies are. Troy is such a joke, I'd read the Iliad 10000 times instead.

Rare instances, like I said. The possibilities of written stories are vast compared to the inherent limitations of film. Writers can put you in the head of characters (very hard to do without voice overs or some cheesy gimmick in film), deceive you with an unreliable narrator, create spectacular moments that no big budget film can hope to recreate, etc..

That doesn't mean there aren't many great films. Just that the potential of a great book exceeds that of a great film by a huge margin. Not because movie makers aren't good story tellers or don't know what they are doing. It is because of the limits of the medium.

I disagree, they are just different media. It doesn't mean how much of a story you can tell, but how you tell it. A film can express feelings or situations not only by voice overs, but in a lot of other ways: camera movements, particular photography, sound etc. The time limitation is not a big deal, look at the seventh seal, it explores the theme of death in only 90 minutes and it does it majestically, better than any book of Phalaniuk imho, to make an example.

Obviously there are qualitative differences. But anything film can do visually/audibly, words can evoke as well and do it better. There are, simply put, more options with written word.

Again, I'm not saying there aren't great films. Seventh Seal is a grim classic, along with a lot of other amazing films that helped move the medium from a moving pictures gimmick to an art form. The list is long. I'm also a huge movie fan, myself. I appreciate Ford, Kurosawa, Leone, Wells, Kubrick, etc., as much as one can. I've got prints of original posters for Metropolis and per un Pugno di Dollari in my living room next to portraits of the Cohen brothers and Scorsese that a friend made.

So I'm not motivated by some snobbish bias towards books. I think it is a matter of fact.

I see your point but I still disagree. The reason behind the fact that a film adapting a book is in the vast majority of cases worse than the book itself is not due to the fact that the medium is inferior, but because the film itself is badly made.

Honestly I'd argue the opposite, while in it's true that you can't really show direct introspection in film , you can do so much subliminal stuff with the visuals and the audio and there's so much room for ambiguity in the dialogue. I'd take something like The Wire over a lot of good books any day.

e: imo the whole book > movie thing is mostly that a lot of adaptions just aren't 'translated' well enough

I think that's the best opportunity to see the advantage of words over film. When there is a translation from one to the other. It's not easy making indirect comparisons.

You have a bit of a point with subtlety in film. There is subtlety in written words but since film is inherently visual/audible, subtlety's impact is probably more pronounced.

i've never made it through a whole book and never will, there is no point when everything that makes a good movie, is normally cut out to make it in line with the hollywood 90min action movie rules

then directors cut is suppose to add that all back in, but hollywood are too poor now a days, so you just get an extra 10 minutes

then after all of that, most people will just call the film crap and missing parts of the story, buy hollywood will still just stick to the 90min thing
