If you arent prepared to enforce the curfew and mow down civilian protestors ruthlessly, you have no bussines whatsoever staging a coup d'etat. Granted, its a tough ask from a conscript army, but they should have never left the barracks without being certain of the soldiers follow-through. hello all, short summary here about this whole fuck up:

1) it was either faked or done by a minority of the army that was retarded / tricked / pushed into trying to do it. either way it was obvious from start it would have failed

2) as a result our lovely fascist president gained all more power thanks to this and will now procede to arrest all military and government units who were connected along with the people who oppose him saying they are also part of the group responsible of coup. YAY!

3) he will keep extending power and maybe morph into hitler ver 2, yaaaay

on #1, I've been hearing this 'fake' theory in the west a lot, and it seems a bit too Hollywood. It's not like if you come super close to succeeding in a coup, or fail at it, for reasons you can't control, you are automatically retarded. the obviousness of anything like this to an outside is just an example of the kruger effect.

But even from what came up publicly, we know enough to say it was very close

the marmaris hotel was supposedly attacked by at least 25 'Maroon Berets' (special forces) and they missed Erdogan by 15-30 minutes.

over 6000 millitary people particiapted, over 70 generals and admirals. this seems like a full on genuine attempt by the top, not mid level officers like official Turkey seems to portray.

it was far from close really. it was a giant fuck up from the start.

I am not saying its fake btw. just badly planned / rushed / or betrayed by other parties to be left alone.

They attempted to seize media, parliament, military headquarters, and the president. If they got Erdogan, and ministers, who exactly would have controlled police and internal special forces? What exactly makes it such a fuck up?

1) they only went for 1(!) television station out of god knows how many, no internet seize of any kind. the station they took only had air time for like 15 mins until the government jammed it from all air. there was a second attempt to a station hours later with a record low of 6(!) soldiers

2) they didint try to seize parliement. it was bombed after hours when it became obvious it was failed already. people claim it was done by f16s but the damage looked so controlled. like minimal damage (doors blown etc)

3) they did not try to get the president they were super late in trying to do anything to his hotel (the last 2 suggests that this was done last minute like it was someone elses responsibility so they rushed to do it done and failed)

4) the only seize was the military headquarters. in no way was there any attempt to seize any official at all, all tvs aired the president and prime minister and 2183258 government officials for hours

5) My major concern about the fuck up was the time it was done. All previous coups in Turkey happened at 3 to 5 am in the morning and was done by a proper force seizing everywhere simultanously. This was done at 10 pm friday night with little amount of forces and little coordination. it was like a giant circus show for the whole turkey to watch as a late night show. I am still not saying it was fake but all these make it a giant fuck up coup watched by entire turkey

edit: there were also no generals involved. it was 50 mid tier ranked people from all branches

Okey, I understand your point of view now, but I disagree on some statements, based on sources I'm reading and choosing to trust. Without arguing about those, perhaps my main point of disagreement is in how things look like they develop in the tweetoshpere versus how they seemed back in 97. I can't imagine things like that ever run smoothly, or can look closer to success than this, without actual success.

Yeah, that's a big question. It's clear they would benefit much more from capture him, and shooting a plane in the sky, with the crew might just not have been desirable. Also, things were happening on the ground. They captured the hotel first, if they used a bomb, it was for diversion, not destruction. Anyway, to me, every new detail indicates it was close, and real.

It may not have been a false flag, but to me it seems it was guided. They had people in on it and let it happen while casualty avoiding any danger
