maybe he's talking for older quakecons, with quake 3 arena. when teamsize in CTF was 5.

There won't be 'classes' as such, just some abilities on the characters.
Besides, he's not talking about the new game but saying that from the last quakecons they've concluded teamsize 5 is better for team modes.

well

a long time ago there was huge debate about 4v4 vs 5v5 CTF. Before that debate 5v5 CTF was the standard gametype.
5v5 ctf and 4v4 ctf obviously don't play the same, the positions and strategies are different. People usually were in favor of 5v5, especially the belgian players, which were very very good at 5v5 CTF, with players such as impulse, vertex, dem0n...
4v4 became more popular with time mainly because it was easier to gather 4 players than 5 players, and people have been saying that quake is dieing for like more than 10 years now.
I think 4v4 ctf relies more on individual performance than pure teamplay. There are more possible strategies in 5v5 compared to 4v4. But individual performance matters less.

also, looking at games like CS:GO, TF2, overwatch, and even just MOBAs, it has been proved that at least 5v5 works best for teamplay. Quake was and is still the only game that is/was played in 4v4 format. When you increase the number of players per team, then obvly you increase the possibilities of teamplay/strategy at the same time. Look at soccer for example, it's played at 11 vs 11 :D, yes it's not a video game, but still, it confirms my point that more players = more teamplay and less individual performance.

i think that during the interview, all that i've said there is probably what went through the mind of Tim Willits.

CS went 5on5 and then every game adapted to it (easier ton manage for lan organizers if team size match across games)

Agreed. The guy is so passionate about Quake. All anyone has to do is watch any Quakecon footage to see how he treats the game and it's competitors with the utmost respect and dignity they deserve. It must be a curse being that passionate about something it borderlines obsession, maybe all the great people throughout history have to suffer that fate.

Once a season ends, that's when id plans to make balancing adjustments if necessary and introduce new champions."

"Look for more information on Quake Champions to come out during Quakecon in early August. Id hopes to introduce its new eSports focused mode at the event – if it's ready."

What kinda annoys me here is, that they claim everyone can play whatever style suits them best and what you just quoted at the same time.

Those concepts are opposing each other. If you have to figure out what counters the opponent you will never be able to play the style that you like best. Instead the other team's classes will dictate what you have to play.

How the hell is a game with rock paper scissors design going to have a good 1 vs 1 mode?

If dueling isn't the go to competitve mode Quake will die. There is no way a team focused Quake will stand a chance vs CS or Overwatch.

Hell it won't stand a chance vs CoD or Battlefield either.

Have team based gamemodes but for the love god make dueling the primary competitve mode.

The rock paper scissor system might be something you can turn off in some gametypes such as duel.

Duel was not always the number 1 game mode in quake, especially in the earlier versions. I remember the early clanbase eurocups had Quake3 TDM, not duel, and it was great!
Quake can survive with something else than duel as it's main game mode.
It has been proven that having duel as your main game mode means having a very small elitist community and therefore a game that never reaches a larger audience. Think games like Quake4, Painkiller, Doom3, Reflex, etc.

Quake is not trying to compete with CS or Overwatch, it's a completely different type of game and also a different community. There are a lot of successful team games which aren't as popular as CS or OW.

We need a new arena FPS which is team based.
Fuck dueling being the primary competitive mode.

1 vs 1 is where it's all at. Everyone loves team play but at the end of the day we want to see who is the best.

We play team games to have fun, we play 1 vs 1 to decide who is the best player.

Big yawn at seeing who's the best at timing items, especially when we're basically seeing the same 8 players over and over.
Team games also have the element of team play, which is beautiful to see when done right.
You said it yourself team modes is where the fun is. You're not going to get new players if the main mode is duel. What's the point of creating a new game if its only going to be played by 500 players.

reboot Quake1 into a very high quality singleplayer (like Doom4) and add a multiplayer faithful to the original with some added features + post-release support
now with high fidelity modern graphics, they could answer the 20 year old question: are shamblers covered in fur or with feathers?

my humble opinion: vq3-engine in q3 was the climax ( except for qw/cpma players ), q4 was worse so as ql and qc will be much more worse for sure. we hope for a new q3 but that wont happen. nobody of us cares about graphics, we care about gameplay and they will fuck it up ~
