Campgrounds, Furious Heights or Blood Run, maps like that ?

Fusion is nice for 2v2

actually campgrounds is a very very nice 2v2 TDM map, but for anything else, it sucks so bad.

So what would be a good 2v2 TDM map laying ? A powerup in an open space ? Different zones but balanced in terms of items ?

you need to think out of the box to be a good mapper, most people doing maps in reflex are trying to do someone else's map but "better", it doesn't work.

a brand new map is much better than a wannabe bloodrun/campgrounds

The three main maps are Almost Lost, Bloodrun and Campgrounds (there are other ones which seem to have potential, but no-one ever agrees to play them so can't be sure). I'd say they all have their strengths and weaknesses which don't make one map better than the other. The main weaknesses on all of them are that they are too easily controlled by having a railgun and they barely have any areas to have interesting 2v2 fights at. The problem is that they are all designed 10+ years ago which means that the room architecture is relatively primitive and they were not meant to have team battles in.

A proper team fight needs a) big rooms and b) ways to limit hitscan domination within those big rooms. In the old school maps the rooms are mainly empty and primitive so there aren't any obstacles/level changes to hinder the aim of the players with hitscan weapons - it's really easy for them to mop the fights.

I would say the best map for team fights is Ragnarok (which is a 4v4 map). If you analyze the mega/shaft room for example, you have a big room which has important items so you'll often get 3v3/3v4/4v4 fights there. Also, you have a lot of small level changes, nooks, bumps, pillars and stairs which all can give cover for the player who doesn't have shaft/rail and allows him to get closer into his preferred range. All of that makes the fights very dynamic because there isn't a single spot in the room for a railer that covers the whole room and this means he always has to adjust his position to have an angle for a shot or to be safe.

There's an opinion I've heard in this community that somehow having "tiered" weapons is a good concept for TDM/Quake which I think is retarded and just lazy game design concept. The way I see it is that both teams get a set of weapons which they manage to control and that gives them a dynamic in fights - set of viable tactics that should cater for the items they have. So ideally you have 2 different teams with asynchronous item sets and they both have different tactical goals in mind when going into a fight. On a good TDM map neither of the item sets is better by default, but the difference comes from the players knowing how to use their weapon sets better. This requires that the map makers understand how the game and different weapons work so they can balance them by map design. Duel should have similar game design principle in mind.
