I would recommend starting out with /addbot insertname 1

It will start at level 1 and once you have mastered fighting it, you can just change from 1 to 2 to 3 4 and 5. if you master killing five, then referr to the above statement about improving the bots actions.

Bots can help alot, just remember that its practically 0 latency vs bots, so you practice on LAN terms with bots, but humans will always have a higher ping than bots, unless on lan. So the timing will be a tad bit off. gl hf!

Fore sure it will! Just record some of it and rewatch your demos every so often to see what you are doing wrong and what you can improve on(positioning, dodging, etc)

Meh. Bots are very predictable so it's easy to get outrageous accuracy against them. Also you usually encounter bots on a local server which helps too. The gap is large between bots and players. 40% might be attainable against newbies (also predictable movement) if you can do 70% against bots. But don't expect to get 40% against good players, especially if they are actively dodging you.

Have used 400 for quite a long time. But just recently have been switching between 800 and 1600 as well...can't decide if I still prefer 400 or not

400 is good for low/super low sens

800 is good for medium/almost high sens

1400+ is good for high sens

Hal (stermy's little bro, not Hal_9000 from cpm) is using 800dpi + med sens (~24cm/360°) and apparently it works really well for him :)

As i'm playing at 11.3cm/360° (so, high sens obviously) i have my zowie ZA11 set to 1600dpi. I find it more logical to increase my DPIs and using quite low sens number ingame (sensitivity 2.3 in quakelive) rather than having very low DPIs like 400 and having sensitivity like 8-10 in quakelive.

also i've heard that with low dpi + high/ultra high sens, there's "pixels skipping" or things like that. Not saying it's impossible to play with low dpi + high sens, but imho not very recommended, also concerning the fact that nowadays 99% of mice apart from WMO/IE 3.0 can go with high DPIs without any trouble.

I don't think that's exactly true. I max out my lg at 60-63% (65 is very rare) vs. bots (more like 52-55% average) and still hitting 45-50% lg in online FFA (even in hardcore games) or ~40-40+ lg on #tdmpickup most of the time.

While in FFA, the skill-range on the server might be quite broad, the lowest skill level on pickup games is much higher.

Another thing is that one's (at least my personal) accuracy might actually largely depend on a particular map. I could get pretty good numbers for both RG and RL on ztn2dm3 (which I played mostly), especially against bots, but those dropped dramatically on other maps because possible opposition combinations, movement paths, anticipated player appearance points, common sound patterns, etc. were completely different.

I have a buddy that I typically more of less easily won on The Rage, but totally sucked against on Painkiller, although both of our RG stats were mediocre (probably his slightly better). Sorry for using Q2 as reference, but QL should not be much different in this context I guess.

I use these settings. They're still predictable but sometimes they're not terrible. Sometimes Ill set g_knockback to 0 so I cant just push them for 70 lg. I just try to focus on dodging then aiming vs bots otherwise its just too easy to hit them.

Then try to hit sarge without moving (with lg), only moving your mouse. Try both at long range (so you have to +back a bit) and med/close range.

If you're able to hit 72% (with lg) at long range for at least 3 min then there is quite a high chance that you'll be able to hit 40-45% on decent players, at that range. At least it's the case for me.
If you're able to hit 61% (still with lg) at close range for at least 3min, then it's possible that you'll manage to hit 45-50% on decent players, at that range. There again, it's the case for me.

playing against bots can be a nice warmup actually. Or to test new settings. Playing real players is still better tho, except if they're too noobs.

BUT

your dodges will suck hard if you only practice with bots. Still, some players almost don't dodge but hit insanely high accuracies, so that compensate a bit.

Every time i put commands like, Bot_aasoptimize 1, bot_challenge 1, Bot_showpaths 1, bot_showtourpoints 1, Bot_showAvoidSpots 1 in, it never saves.

It gets really annoying to type all these things in over and over every time i do bot practice.

Is there a way to save the Bot configs so that when i load major, doom, sargent, etc they all come online with those settings intact??

Also one more question. The bot_interbreedcharacters command.....how do you use it correctly? For example if i wanted all bots to be interbreeded so that they use all weapons to max, dodge best etc. How to do that?

Didn't check it out ingame, but what it seems to do is to add a number of bots using the desired bot character under some circumstances (namely the tournament/duel mode, I think).

I think you cant get worse bots than the ones in Q3/QL they dont strafe, they don't dodge. Look at how insane are UT bots compared to that ^^

Bultat played with bots but it was in QuakeWorld so it might have much better bots.

Ponpoko's 3rd Zigock II bots for Quake 2 are pretty decent; didn't have chance to compare them to UT ones though.

I think the ddk railgun thing on space camp was something I could see myself doing, but aside from that, just play more if you wanna improve your aim. My problem is always that im a habitual person so If im aiming vs a bot im gonna get used to always thinking that im against a bot which in reality is never the case and its different vs every player

Depends.

It makes a HUGE difference whom you play against. (What weapons he's using, how he dodges, how he positions himself - and what game mode you play, what gear you and your opponent have, who has a bad or good day etc.). There are many factors you have to include in your calculations, so there's no universal truth regarding this matter.


I had interwebz very late, so many-many years I played against bots 90+% of the time (or DeFRaG). Nowadays, aim is certainly not my weakest point - if manly tears would be a currency, I would be rich. ))

I tell you what I did back then, maybe it will help you.


For rockets and rail;

Load up dm17 (Longest Yard) in FFA, add 1 Anarki or Sorlag on Nigtmare (\addbot anarki 5 or \addbot sorlag 5) and that's it.
The map is very open so you have a good opportunity to train air-rockets and rail. There are a lot of jump pads too, so you can practice the easy shots to perfection as well.
The key is to try to hit as many air rockets as you can. Only press left click, if you REALLY think that the shot will hit. Patience and zen mind. Sick flicks will come later.
If you are fighting on flat ground, always try to shoot a bit under the opponents' leg, so the rocket will catapult him into the air -> then air-rocket or a rail.
Well, rail in general is much easier, just point & click.
You can train you machinegun here as well - since it's an open map, it's good for hitscan practice.


For lg;

Load up Thunderstruck in FFA, add 1 Hossman or Hunter on Nightmare (\addbot hossman 5 or \addbot hunter 5).
The map is basically a flat plane so you have an easy place to practice lg aim. If you can hit constant 50%+ on one of these bots, you are basically good to go. It will take time.



For shotgun and plasma;

Just play FFA with random bots on any map, preferably on one that has tight corridors and tricky junctions as well. If you already trained a lot of basic projectiles and hitscan (the rocket-lg-rail triumvirate), these "support" weapons will be much easier to hit with.
Shotgun is fucking AWESOME btw and plasma has the highest damage output per second in the game - and also the hardest weapon to hit good with.

You have to differentiate between mouse-aim and strafe-aim. If you use Google (with the added ESR keyword), I'm sure you'll find some pretty elaborate threads about them.



4.5 sens on 1000 cpi is really high. Generally speaking, it's much easier to hit good accuracies with lower sensitivities. You don't have to be 60 cm / 360 degrees, but it's advisable to find a golden middle road. Something like sens 2.5 or 3 in your case.
And there's accel too (accel master race >:] ). But you could basically write an essay about mouse settings, so you have to put the time in to experiment with it. For example, I found out that much higher m_pitch than m_yaw helps my vertical aim a lot.
Imo the key is to have a setting where you can comfortably turn 180 degrees, but you also can trace-aim with lg nicely.
It's all subjective, but you are bound to invest time if you want to find the ideal settings for you.

\cg_filter_angles (this, just set it to 0 if it's on another value)

You can restart the input subsystem with in_restart.


Settings in general are a bit overrated, but it's still VERY-VERY important to find the comfortable way playing the game regarding mouse, binds, cg_fov, HUD and GFX settings.

ALSO

Aim is heavily influenced by your movement (and dodging) skills. What I found out (at least for me), that playing DeFRaG for years IMMENSELY helped my aim as well, not just my movement. No wonders here; you need near-perfect mouse (and movement) control in DeFRaG and that's why it has a HUGE impact on aim. So as map awareness.

YOU NEED TO PRACTICE FLUID MOVEMENT, maybe even harder than aim.

A few key terms that you have to be absolutely intimate with: circle strafe (both to left and to right), strafe jumping (full-beat and half-beat, both forwards and backwards), rocket jump, grenade jump, plasma boost, plasma climb, wall clipping (clipping corners high-speed). You don't have vertical / horizontal overbounce in QL, just in Q3.

If you can do the bridge to rail (b2r) jump on dm6 (Campgrounds) 7-8 out of 10 times consistently, you have the VERY basics down. Search YT for it. It's much easier to do it in QL than it is in Q3.

DeFRaG is a Quake III Arena mod that centers around movement and it's the ultimate apotheosis of FPS-skill. :>
If you don't have it installed, at least play the QL movement training maps (well, it's primitive compared to DeFRaG, but it's something at least). Practice them until you shit bricks and you can flow through most of them pretty easily.
Then load up some CA on an empty map (CA, because you won't take damage from your own weapons) and practice-practice-practice flowing thorough the actual map geometries like hot knife in butter.

This is one of the best (if not THE BEST) training video regarding movement. Pure gold for beginners. Be familiar with every second of it (well, you can skip the overbounce part if you plan on playing QL only).


Also some pro tips:
-never ever use jump pads against lg or rail
-never jump on ground vs lg, rail - or basically vs anything other than plasma
-since it's not CPM, you are the most vulnerable when you are mid-air - you have very little control over where you will land and what your trajectory will be
-EVERY weapon has it's ideal and worst circumstances you want to use them in. Experiment a lot - weapon advantage in the corresponding situation can win you fights easily even if you are heavily outstacked. For example, switching to lg in the right moment will land 100+ free damage on the enemy in like less than a second. Or if you hear that your enemy is super weak now, you'll stop railing and quickly switch to machinegun or shotgun to get the kill quickly for sure. etc. etc.

There a few situations which override basic principles but you will recognize them with time as you play.

When you are fighting with somebody, positioning is even more important than your actual, raw aiming skill. Also, practice good spam points, spam rockets or nades or plasma on common high-traffic areas, cheeky corners and spawning points, etc. These things will come with experience. Spawn-control and spawn-raping for example is an art in itself.

And yes, as few players mentioned above, hitting Nightmare bots is SUPER-DUPER POTAT EASY.
Don't play TOO much against them though, because you will acquire bad habits (because the bot's complete lack of movement and dodging skills) which will quite hard to get rid of later on.

You could write a book about combat skill. These are just the VERY basics. And I'm tired of typing anyways.



And one more note: BE PERSISTENT AS FUCK. Because it will be a loooong journey with much frustration. But JUST KEEP AT IT.

i do about 75 on the thinktime 0 bots, and usually lg 40 against human opponents. tho, most of my practice aiming the lg came from playing 1v1 ts against human opponents; raping bots is just a decent side effect.

I feel that LG is generally misunderstood. When talking about LG as a skill the percentage you hit is only one side of the cube. Tracking ability is significant but its antithesis is dodging. You have to take into consideration enemy movement, your movement and realize that the enemy controls maybe half of what you hit. So it is not incorrect to say you're only as good as your opponent allows. If a person who did not put much thought into this topic were asked to compare a 50% average player to a 40% average player they might say "Duh, the 50% average is better." That is not entirely true because it does not specify the conditions when those cells hit and depending on the styles the 40% average could very well defeat the 50% average in 1v1 battle. Why? Because the 40% average player may have a spectacular dodge and or maybe the 50% average player has a nonexistent dodge. Raw accuracy is often misleading and that is why you must take the other equally important aspects into consideration. The less movement there is the more percentage means less. Proof? Two players standing in front of each other not moving should result in ~100% accuracy for both.

That is so true tbh. Accuracy is just accuracy. It's just statistics. It can give some insight of the player's skill, but judging a player's skill based solely on his accuracy alone often leads to misunderstanding of how the game really works.

What he has to do is putting in thousands of play hours into the game to get somewhere. The aim part is the easier one; it will improve if you are not a total hycomat and you practice regularily and you have a good mindset. Aim is just a motoric skill (if you don't count pre-fire / spamming).

While it's true that if you have a teacher, you have an easier time (if you only think about aim, it should be a really good dodger), but imo most revelating things will come with experience if you study and think about your own and other's game carefully. Watching some VODs with rapha & 2GD commentary can also help a lot - and watching a shitton of pro VODs in general.
