I've had dealings with him in the past and I'll just say this. Lord soth is a badly organised admin with good intentions and a stubborn attitude.

I know he seems to be a nice guy, but this decision is just not right. Hope he will see this before I'm getting the defloss which is potentially of influence of wether I will pass the group or not

What you've said definitely sounds like it should be you who gets the defwin, but did you try explain your side before posting to ESR? Maybe LordSoth doesn't have all the details of the situation.

Besides, it wasn't like Matr0x had any real problem preventing him to play his game on scheduled day. He was there, had a bad losing streak, raged and quit and even announced his forfeit from the tournament. I personally asked him if he wanted to play our game and he declined.

If you have a chat log of him forfeiting then send that to admin, you can't forfeit and then change your mind later. He might be under the impression that matr0x just couldn't play for whatever reason.

I dont't have the log. If someone else that night in #gametribecups has them please post. Also, i doubt Matr0x will suddenly deny that he said he forfeited. He's a decent guy. Haven't been able to contact him today yet.

Well i can upload my demos vs him but he speaks in Polish that he doesnt want to play anymore. What he does anyways. Tell me if its still important ;)

If you have the demos Wolf, that would be great, ill drop you an email to send them to and ill give them a look over. I am trying to get hold of matr0x and see what he says. I am sure he will be back for series 2 and i hope he is able to play all of his games.

Hmm I have to admit I don't exactly know myself, but I did see a post on ESR regarding a decision of LordSoth about a situation in group A with Spartie and Lars. Perhaps since I don't know the details I should remove 'more' from the title of this post.

I know that last week lars did the same but he came back the next day to play.

I think in this case both players where ok with it, but if someone says they forfeit and the other player cant play the next day, it should stand as a forfeit. I guess it comes down to player discretion.

I played because players were available! Had the case been as with baksteen i would just have forfeited the game! Basically did it as my immediate anger (caused by that ginger turd Kronic;)) shouldnt compromise my support of the few still running quake tourneys!

Did matr0x tell him that he was forfeiting? If he didn't then from the admin's POV it's just two opponents which haven't played for God knows what reason so he's trying to get them to play.

Told it in public IRC chat @ #gametribecups, in private to me and in Polish to Wolf (Wolf can confirm). I doubt he will deny saying it. I've been trying to contact Matr0x but he hasn't been on yet.

Just my two cents worth of opinion:

Personally, I don't know if matr0x had to end the evening early due to external reasons a.k.a. other commitments or decided to end it due to having lost a few games, as baksteen stated. Basically, given those two options and given the situation, I see these possibilities:

1) matr0x had other commitments and therefore needs to play the rest of his games on Wednesday, but baksteen can't play on Wednesday. Giving one of them a def-loss would be pretty arbitrary, as both are at fault for basically the same reason. I'd suggest to let them play on Thursday or Friday, when both of them have the time, as a compromise.

2) matr0x was annoyed about his losses and quit for the evening. As baksteen can't play on Wednesday, the fault of this match-up not taking place is on matr0x' side, as he was available on Tuesday, but decided not to play. Under the assumption that baksteen gave the info about him not being able to play on Wednesday beforehand, then if there is a def-loss to be given, it should be towards matr0x. If baksteen only gave the info after matr0x leaving, this gets more complicated. In that case, I'd suggest the compromise mentioned before: Let them catch up with the game during the upcoming days. As far as I know, the cup won't continue until next Tuesday!?

tl;dr: A def-loss for baksteen is not okay in any case (given the situation) and a def-loss for matr0x is only okay if a) baksteen gave the info on Wednesday beforehand and if b) matr0x just left out of annoyance (lost games).

Provide evidence (=IRC logs) that LordSoth actually knows that Matrox has forfeited the whole tournament. His behavior makes zero sense if he knows it and perfect sense if he doesn't. And why didn't you tell him that in that session you just pasted the log from? If you did, what was the response?
If you feel that he's behaving wrongly, fucking challenge him to legitimize his behavior instead of publishing private conversations behind his back.

Have no IRC logs but if one doesn't believe it then one could ask Matr0x himself, I doubt he wouldn't be honest.

I have lordsoth on skype and believe me I've tried solving this with him before turning to ESR. But a normal convo with him didn't work out,. Got a message from him this very morning, basically saying 'turn up tonight or you'll get def loss'. Then when I talk to him he takes 5 hours to reply with an answer that ended with 'end of' (discussion, I presume).

And the log I just posted above is from after he told me that Matr0x didn't show up again today either, and I was granted the defwin.

It sounds like he's literally autistic (not meant as an insult, him not seeing that it's obvious you should get the defwin is something that autists do, similar to when they don't understand if a statement was an insult or a compliment).
If interaction with him is too much of a pain in the ass, the rational thing would probably be to not participate in any further tournaments organized by him.

... so I guess the following rule was the first to go

tl;dr LordSoth has a heart of gold and is passionate about the game, but should leave the admin duties to someone else (and use a spell checker when writing official info)

Upon discovering this thread Lordsoth messaged me on skype and we had a chat. I'm pretty sure he has good intentions about running the tournament and I do think that in a way he cares about the participants, although in my opinion he did not handle this situation correctly. He feels differently about that.

Either way, I want to thank him for investing his time, energy and funds into running this tournament and providing games to play and watch for the community. I hope he realizes that nothing said in this thread is meant to personally insult him or make fun of him. Just hope next time he'll hire another admin *cough*INS*cough*

In the previous post I was thinking of the Quake community specifically but I believe we can extend that to any video game (online) when played in a competitive setting. Competition seems to bring to worst out of people when there is no repercussion for their wrongdoings.

If the childish insults come from a 13 year old boy, yes. If they come from a 37 year old man, it shows there's something really wrong with that person.

I heard that Matr0x felt sick on Tuesday and lay down after the first 4 matches. In the meantime his 13 year old cousin, who visited him that day, used Matr0x's irc account to tell everyone that he would forfeit the match versus baksteen.

Professional esports require sick notes from a legitimate doctor.

Moving forward.. the rules should be clear and followed by both the admin and the players, so maybe they can be translated to Polish/Russian on his website. We are human and I think many don't read the small print but rules shouldn't really be changed adhoc. I used to admin UKCCL leagues and sometimes admin gets some stick but it's about being fair and following the rules otherwise people lose faith in your integrity.

Anyway this is now all sorted, I'm sure it will continue and help quake interest grow before QC is released.
