Everyone knows Barry Lyndon ok, but some of the others could be interesting. Heard from Black Death before, might give it a chance.

I've already seen some things from Alex de la Iglesias, most those edgy ones, Perdita Durango and Day of the Beast and one of the comedies. But might look at 800 Bullets too, although it sounds like an episode from A-Team.

Sorry not really into Asian films, their symbolism disturbs me on another level tbh. Might look at the trailer as those seem to be fun and not so serious.

People in the UK barely know about it, no idea about anywhere else (it wasn't screened in cinemas here), but I thoroughly enjoyed the film Snowpiercer and would highly recommend it.

Interesting themes/representation of society, great action, fantastic visuals, ticked all the boxes for me at least!

It's a very very recent film and thoroughly went through all popular channels.

But obviously you shouldn't discuss it with Marvel fans :)

The director is widely known for his """"Indie"""" efforts, all of them very watchable, sometimes fun, sometimes sad etc..

This one has huge production value imho. Sets, costumes and almost even more so the music are so beautiful, you'll want to keep watching it just for the atmosphere.

It's not really a vampire film though. The vampire genre films from let's say "Interview with the Vampire" until "True Blood" you'll always get this supernatural vs. human war/fight. And the film will be about that. But this one just features some vampires you could say, it's not even outspoken they are vampires.

This one is about what a vampire could be like, wise and old, romantic but modern too. They are huge art freaks in terms of what they value. Remember they lived for 100s of years and naturally they like hand crafted clothing, damn good music, aesthetics, without being edgy about it; and the film reflects this in the photography, soundtrack, art direction with 100%.

I'll have to check it out. Personally my favourite vampire movies are the korean "thirst" and the classic nosferatu, both in murnau and herzog's versions.

I must say I like most of them for some reason, all of them seem to add something to the genre:

Shadow of the vampire from Werner Herzog, which is somewhat based on Nosferatu

Fearless vampire killers and Interview for their classic gay portrayal

Carpenter's Vampires (1998), Blade, Queen of the Damned for their modern 90s kind of action take on it

Let the right one in and True Blood recently

And don't forget the video games either: Legacy of Kain as a totally different take on them as godly post-human beings or Vampire Bloodlines RPG that has loads of different horror/action motifs

Magical Girl (2014; Carlos Vermut.

Interesting story, where you try to figure out what's going on for the most part of the film (it has nothing to do with magic or spiritualism).
It's one of those films, where the director is so convinced of his calm images and compelling story, that there is no need for much action (a lot happens, also violence, but you are more engaged through the narrative).
It has two comical scenes, where I literally laughed out loud, even though it's far from a comedy.
It's a spanish film and you know how those spaniards are - if the story doesn't encompass some sort of perverted sexual aspects it ain't spanish.
Probably wouldn't want to watch it first thing in the morning.

Not everybody is a film nerd (=anybody who actually goes and looks for films), and not everybody has been around for half a century. From the oh so alternative directors you listed I only know Kubrick, and I've only seen 2001 (planning on getting A Clockwork Orange, having recently read the book). I don't watch any TV, but that doesn't matter as even mainstream Classics like 2001, the original Planet of The Apes or The Dictator are only ever aired by, for lack of a better word, artsy channels anyway. edit: well I've heard of tarantino, obviously.

anyway, here's a documentary that is not very documentary-ish, in the sense that it's mainly imagery without any narration apart from a few sentences from the subjects: Workingman's death (2005)
(I hope that isn't too mainstream for you, as it has won prizes and shit) I recommend turning on the director's commentary for the second watch.

here's another documentary, which we watched in my school when we were talking about russia in regional geography: Bye bye babushka (1996) by Rebecca Feig.
What we watched was about life in Russia after downfall of the Soviet union, particularly the life of the older generation which lost a lot of perspective. Things went to shit. I am not entirely sure whether Bye bye babushka is the movie we watched. I'm having doubts. Google fails to deliver any information about the movie or the director apart from https://www.hrw.org/legacy/iff-97/filmfj/feigbyeb.html

Well, I saw Kill bill on TV like a decade ago, back when i still watched TV. And one of the Dark Knight movies at some point, probably the first one. But I had to go through Lynch/Refn/Nolan's wiki page to find out what they made. Tarantino having made Kill Bill I only knew because of the mainstream media attention he gets.
If you don't watch TV and you don't go to the cinema and you don't download movies, you really aren't exposed to anything that happens in the medium.

No, I just never bothered with going in-depth with movies. I don't try to find recommendations from dedicated film nerds/communities online or when I listen to my local music-arts-and-culture-in-general radio (which I do) and they discuss new movies, I don't write the names down and go watch them in the cinema (which I do for music). Never occured to me.

The director of Workingman's Death is Austrian, so I know about it and watched it even on TV, good choice to mention :)

Very nice shots and everything, but I always fear that documentaries are usually just as manipulative as a ficton film
