Yes there has been a lot of progression, a lot of it driven by the 3d development. There are now 240hz screens for example.
As for which have the best color I'm clueless though.

Btw, for the next 5 years 120hz is more than enough (for regular pc gaming). So you might be better off taking a 120hz screen which has good color contrast.

I know there are 240hz screens, but hz isnt everything. Like I said before, input lag is key too. I remember hearing how there are 2 types of panels, one that have better color but worse lag (even with higher hz) and then the other with shitty color like my 2233rz but good responsiveness..

2233rz was like the 1st 120Hz monitor, with bad input lag. I am using benq xl2411T which is 144Hz and way better than 2233rz. But There should be even better monitors than that one now, also with higher Hz....

bad input lag? That's a first to hear for me, prad talks about 10ms, that's like nothing.
Also I'm owning one and until now it plays perfectly responsive. It was also perfectly responsive as I switched from 150 Hz crt to 2233rz.

Plenty? No not at all. Most "comparable" screens who maybe got better input lag, suffer from worse contrast ratio or colors. Also the 2233rz didnt have the dead or stuck pixel problems most monitors actually have, no matter what price range. Im fine with my (2009) 2233rz for a few more years.

Maybe not plenty but a handful, with 144 Hz or even higher Hz, with bigger screens and ultraHD res.

I Still love the 2233rz dearly, I love the 16:10 aspect ratio, the hastle-free use and good performance.

Do you even play quake? If you play quake on 2233rz you get disadvantage against people with for example The benq 2411z monitor.
Maybe it doesnt matter for you, but IT DOES make a difference. Just as 30 or 50ms ping is noticeable.

if u use vsync, g sync oder freesync maybe.. but not if u dont use it. than its best to have the maximun what the GPU can produce.. so u have all the time the "freshest" picture. some of the old frames get dropt.

If you're running the game at the same frame rate as your monitor's refresh rate, your tear lines will likely be quite visible without a form of vsync, which adds input lag.

125fps or 250fps is normal for QL. 250 will be a bit more responsive (4ms worst case), but I've heard 250fps can cause sounds to be dropped sometimes.

I run ql o a notebook without grafikcard. The i5 6200 intel hd 520 does the job for me. Is most of the time at 250, only on some maps it drops to 160 or so. Setting max fps to 250 is for me a solution for cooling. So the hd520 is not at 100% max the hole time.

calling it bad input lag is certainly exaggerated bullshit.
are there better screens out there today? of course. does 2233 have 'bad input lag'? no, it's very slight. you could argue that it has poor colors, viewing angles, glossy surface, and is 16:10 ... but that's neither here nor there.

Latest-gen IPS panels have only 1 or 2 ms more input lag than TN monitors while providing superior color quality. Worth looking into.

TN, especially with 144hz+ monitors just have plain avarage colouring even after calibration but it's satisfying enough for gaming. Also way cheaper.

In the end it depends on your budget.

2233 has high input lag. Yes, I have it from years and if we exclude the 120hz - it's a shitty monitor. I can track better on my old t220 when I get used to the lower hz.

I hate to say but theres some truth in this. But then again it never claimed to be a 1 ms monitor like the T220.

That sounds very strange to me.
Mainly because 1 frame on a 120hz screen is around 8ms not 16.
Testing a 120hz screen on 60hz is bound to give crappy results.

144Hz, low input lag, DP, 2xHDMI, DVI-D, D-Sub, 2xUSB 3.0, headphone jack, flicker-free, portrait mode etc., very good colors for TN.

This one, Asus VG248QE, Asus PG248Q, BenQ XL2411Z, iiyama red eagle b1. All those have low input lag and are fine. The Asus PG is the best but very expensive.

Add a bit more and buy XL2540 instead PG248Q. Picture quality (less interference, colors, etc) is better and 240Hz instead 180Hz.

For gaming new 144hz (and i think 240hz) monitors are better than your old samsung.
In the color range, contrast etc, va and ips panels (even cheap ones) are better than any tn gaming monitor.

I'm not saying go get a CRT since the concept of buying a 2nd hand one is now void, as they are too old, possibly take ages to warm up, lines across the screen and the shipping cost is just not worth it. Not to mention finding a good one like the Sony Trinitron G520 I use to have.
You can carry on waiting and keep your current one while waiting for better technology, but then again they've been trying for the past 20 years. To be honest just get a 8-bit or more IPS. In this casual gaming age where nobody is playing Quake anymore it's about time you try the other aspect of LCD screens. Also don't buy into the 96hz overclock stuff either, I have mine on 110hz and it feels no where near a simple 120hz TN panel. Just dragging a window with my mouse at speed looks blurry and can't read text, something my CRT never suffered from.

Even if im not going to be playing Quake regularly, I still want to be able to enjoy it when I do, and im not going to enjoy it unless the monitor is as responsible as possible, I don't think no IPS panel cuts it.

By looking at this thread I still don't see any option that's worth the money and objectively better than the 2233rz. Seems we are stuck with still the same shit. You either get good colors and shit responsiveness and blurriness, or you get bad colors but good responsiveness and no blurriness when moving.

They milked the 60hz technology for 10+ years. Only around 2010 onwards, or at least thats what it feels like, they started to release these 120-144hz monitors. They went through all the gimmicks in the rule book, LightBoost, Gsync........+ more milking to come. Don't forget LCD>TFT>LED. I kinda miss the days when everybody was going moist for dem TFT's, oh the superioirty. They claim if you want good CRT like viewing angles + photography get an IPS. For gayming you stick with the TN stuff and so on. I don't know anymore there or whatever fuck, claims they have technology that can solve this, deems it cost prohibitive yet continues to make bullshit curved displays. I'm starting to make my monitor futuristic by installing a letter box in front of it so I know what it's like to see life in 100:9 I don't know anymore what the fuck they are thinking.
Here is a short list of what I miss from my old CRT

1. Butter fluid motion when you move the mouse fast. Obviously most noticeable in gaming
2. Non native resolution, it means you can play anything either at 800x600 or 1800 x 1440 looking exactly the same. Cheap way also to play high end games at low resolution to minimize FPS impact. I'm struggling on some games with my IPS @ 1440p
3. Super tight Dot pitch and 0ms response
4. The good old 4:3 aspect ratio. Even on my 27" I find no reason to have 16:9, in fact I had to change my habits and now open 2 things side by side because even the internet thinks its stupid to read text across the entire screen. So you can actually have 2 browsers open

At this point if you casually game then maybe it shouldn't really matter what you choose. Just go with your needs and most importantly don't spend stupid $$$ on glorified monitors. There are better things in life to waste money on.

no it still works but thing got dark cant see really good in some darker games or videos... benq is ALOT better, better image quality, faster, etc. only problem u gonna have is calibrating colors but u will figure it out fast.

I have the BENQ Xl2411Z and it's really bad colorwise, it doesn't even show 100% sRGB, so even calibrated to it's best possible settings it's still remarkably far away from showing colors correctly. I don't know if it's much different than my older 2233rz, but i guess not. I still like the responsiveness and 1920x1080p is nice compared to the 2233rz..

thanks but i used a spyder 4 pro to calibrate it, so you can't get any better calibration and it still can't show all colors, but i don't think any gaming monitor can. :)

The LG ... omg.... how come no one recommending him the LG no input or resposse time issues. Really good colors out of box. 144 hz. It's between 250 and 350 dollar depending on where and when you buy. It's best monitor ever and overdrive isn't shit and monitor doesn't give headache

I'm pretty much in the same shoes right now, just with an LG W2363D instead of the Samsung. Still pretty much happy with it but I have no clue if there is something worth upgrading for out there. What about the ViewSonic XG2401. Is this one any good? New screen should have freesync.

The iiyama looks good too and I know they had great customer support in the crt days. Thing is I can only find the B2 Red Eagle version in store and not the B1.

The Samsung C24FG70FQU has a 144hz VA panel with 1ms and is not overpriced like most others. But I cant find a proper review.

That Viewsonic looks great and has low input lag. don't get the b2 iiyama, the input lag is horrific
