I wonder if he has one particular quake game in mind. They all seem to have their own history and outstanding players.

It's all about awareness, you need people who already play the title to get out there and actually make content around the game, it can be anything from playing and teaching at the same time, it could be epic fails and shit or again the usual frag montage/films.

It's all about content creation in the community. There are so many decent quake players and streaming the game alone won't do it. Majority of people who are big on twitch started out making youtube content. It's not easy, it takes time but with consistency you'll see you'll pull back the community slowly but surely.

My sentiments exactly stPHN. One thing eSport orgs are doing now is making their players stream/content create because they are playing under their name. Content creating is usually looked over and is done by the individual. The former and current pros will have little to no problem with bringing in views and who knows they could even make something out of it

For Quake the only hope is to release another new game of the franchise, instead of thinking players will come back to the old games.

The thing that happened with Starcraft and Melee is that people were still playing them casually. There was a huge playerbase to begin with, just not the tournaments since they had moved onto the sequels.

Quake doesn't have the playerbase anymore. Can't have tournaments with 525 players total in the world, that according to Steam Charts. You can create a community from the playerbase, but a community cannot create a playerbase that's 50 times larger than how it started.

Or in other words, it's not like Melee players started streaming on Twitch and that created a healthy playerbase. That just doesn't work. What they did was creating instances of participation for an already massively played game, with several thousands of active players. Of course those tournaments made some former players came back as well, as the games are fun to spectate with the huge crowds (Melee and Starcraft) and Melee being very easy to play in person (show up with a controller and that's it).

The other thing is the potential those games had for a revival. Starcraft and Melee had a ton of potential new players, and Quake3/QL does not.

Starcraft and Melee had over 7 million sales, therefore they had a ton of potential players for them to come back. At one point Starcraft was filling stadiums in Korea and Melee was the best selling game of a Nintendo console. Both had mainstream popularity and real life advertising. Plus the games are very easy to install, a major plus for returning players, as in five minutes both Starcraft and Melee can be pirated and be played online with the most optimal setup. In practice today they are free to play games.

Instead, Quake3 was the worst selling Quake game of them all and didn't manage to sell a single million copies, that according to id software. Quake3 was way less popular than Quake2 and Q3 always was the odd niche game in live tournaments. Never the main event, never more than 10,000 viewers. Quake Live had less than 5,000 players by around 2013, when the QL stats site was created I think, and not it was 500 according to Steam. Then, if somebody decides to come back to Quake3 first he has to spend an hour searching for what's required to join a server and play well, with all the mods, the maps, the practically unplayable default config and all, and second he will realize there's no one to play with and no fun to be had anymore. For coming back to QL there's a paywall for accessing a game from practically 1999, and the player will only find lots of CA servers with people you don't know, without anything being organized by the community. Under those conditions no one is coming back. For old Quakers it's more fun and simpler to play Overwatch with old Quake pals.
