From some interview about Q4:
IGN: How much can you say about multiplayer?
Tim Willits: That's another great question. The multiplayer is based on the Quake III physical feel. You know, it's mathematically the same. As a developer, you don't want to totally change the way everything feels between multiplayer and single-player, but we felt that we really needed to do that in Quake 4, so when you play multiplayer it's totally different than single-player. You'll have teleportation pad, jump pads, your bigger combat maps you're familiar with from Quake III. Deathmatch, plus there are CTF variants.
Quake 4 had the exact same movement that Quake 3 had in the beginning. The reason it felt completely different and slow was because everything else in the game was off (scaling being a major one).
Do you remember that time
We were showing off our brand new flashy bikes
You looked so fine
Until you both fell over and then started to cry!
Do you recall that day
Fearlessly we climbed the highest tower
Then you became afraid
Too scared to climb down you stayed up there for hours!
Do you remember that time?
Do you recall that day?
Do remember that time
Alone at last, naked by the fire
Then all your friends came by,
They rushed in the room and you had no time to hide
Do you recall that day,
You proposed to me fell down to your knee
You didn't know what to say,
So she knelt down to for she thought you'd lost your keys!
Do you remember that time?
Do you recall that day?
