the champions concept would be more difficult to pull off in stricte quake 1 setting (options for character design would be somewhat limited in order to keep it in touch with the setting),

Quake Champions lives between Quake 1 and Quake 3, very heavy in Q1 style lore... but leaving room for these gladiator like characters from Q3 to make some sense. But visually, we have a very gothic lovecraftian tone similar to the original Quake.

DOOM had vk_lodbias which did essentially the same thing by forcing everything to use the lowest LOD and mipmap levels, probably wont get patched out of quake

But on a serious note, if the game turns out to be at least somewhat a success (or at least finishes off QL), I do suspect people will play for few weeks on high details (or whatever their hardware will allow them to). But after the novelty wears off, and picmip will turn out to be beneficial, I don't see why people would not change it.

The challenge is to adjust your art style in so far that it satisfies esport players, without losing its roots. Overwatch for example had it easier there, as they had a fresh start and no legacy.

With Quake it will be more difficult but not impossible to create a game that looks good and at the same time suits the more hardcore players.

I play CPMA over quakeworld because I think CPMA has better gameplay.

nope, thats what i would have done if i was making the next quake game. imagine how much time would be saved making high polycount models and megatextures and in the end get a dozen complaints for more crosshairs and brightskins i would just skip everything and give them what they usually play which is a r_picmip 5 geometry game with bloated stickmen as player models.

Picmip is going to be an ability of a hero champion. They'll call it "Targeting" where it'll make the map picmipped and change enemy model(s) to brightskin.

Quake 4 has nothing to do with Quake 2, it is not even a sequel, they just added " stroggs " and a remake of " The Edge " and ppl think its a Quake 2 sequel, IT IS NOT !!!!

Thats nice, but make it more simplier and add all possible guides for new players. Make awards, make lvl up, make competition mode basically try to copy much as possible from overwatch and make it in your own style. Important; what brings ppl attention are hero stories (animated videos). I dont mind if game will be released next year, but you have to beat Overwatch. I never thought I will play overwatch. I got addicted to it during the night. First I saw hero trailers after it wanna make me try to play with one hero Overwatch. First time I entered the game and played few matches I was so impressed how good this game is made. I have tried, played and I was really impressed although gameplay is so bad, but there is so much you can play for.

Important what has to be done:

- Copy and make in your own style from games like Destiny (Destiny 2 coming out), Overwatch.
- Awards and lvl up
- Make character storyline and make videos such as QC trailer.
- Make skins or some other items aval to buy / sell. From that you could do some profit.
- Spend big amount of money to promote Quake Champions
- Dont fuckup with engine like blizzard did with overwatch. 95% are playing with ultra low settings and some tweaking cfg, other players play paladins.
- Do not go with cheap pricing. Minimum should be something like 59€.

I don't own Overwatch myself, but on various benchmark sites I saw that even a low-end card (e.g. 1050 ti) would give 100+ fps on higher settings without any tweaking whatsoever. Are those benchmarks fake or what?

And I disagree about trying to copy Overwatch. If you copy Overwatch, you end up like Battleborn. Unless you are able to spend a massive amount of money on marketing, tournaments etc it is pure suicide.

Quake Champions should be Quake in the first place. Make it accessible for casuals, add gimmicks, give it a nice story line, copy some features from Overwatch - but the game must imo still feel like Quake to stand its ground in the upcoming wave of games that try to join the MOBA FPS bandwagon.

Where did u get that info? 100+ on low gfx? Have you ever tried overwatch 6v6? For overwatch you need to have at least I5 worth 250$ and gfx worth 150$ to get constant 100 fps with low settings. I have very good comp with no apps runing in background and im facing some drops with low settings.

If quake stays QUAKE then it will die in first month of their release. We grew up with quake, we want uniqe Quake - I want this. It will not work like this. Quake needs to have changes. The best example is overwatch. They should anaylize overwatch and copy them + do much better than they did - fuck delay release date just make the best game on market! How do you think Mobile phone or auto industires work? They copy from each other + do better than the original. This is how this works. If we stay with pure quake then the game will fail in first month. Maybe scene from esreality will dislike that changes or total different game, but it will bring a lot of new players. Us - ESR will be like 2%-5% of scene that QC might have if they do the game properly and if they spent a lot of money for advertising. Yes, you need to spend a lot of money in order to be successful - this is how marketing works.

His i5-6500 is fairly powerful though, but goes for around 210€ online. As I wrote I don't own the game but if it is ever on sale I may give it a try and report the results.

I did not say it should stay pure Quake, but that at its heart it still should be recognizable as Quake. Same with Doom which definitely got "inspired" by other popular games, but they still managed to make it feel like Doom. Much unlike Doom 3 for example, which completely failed at that.

i am not going to argue with review scores but to me doom 4 is like a halo reskinned with a pinch of crysis (a complete failure to innovate). i am simply appaled that people have such low standards nowadays that they trust review scores over their own experience of the game. my latest experience of an id game is wolfenstein new order and it really isn't worthy of anything above 75 percent.

The only "true" id games after q3 are doom 3 and rage, and im not saying doom 2016 is the new masterpiece of fps history but still better than them.

to me there is no better games than q1/q2/q3/ql to this day since its the only id games i keep playing/watching, the rest are fun games but i don't play them every week. doom might look like better but to me its still the same mishmash as it was with all post q3 id games, that is they simply borrow ideas from other games and i see almost no new experiences in their games except for a cod style fun thrill ride for a few runs. rage to me is the only sp game i find interesting, but i doubt it will ever be topped since carmack left taking with him all the good that was left from old id.

People play Doom for its single player campaign. People play Quake Live for its multiplayer. Even with a good replayability, the latter will pretty much always win. Isn't this comparison a bit unfair?

i would for sure have liked to see something new that can be played for more than just a single playthrough, for me rage is ids best effort at singleplayer that wasn't just a copy of everything we see on the market so i give id credit for that but even rage is basically a single run through game and the way quake live is treated is basically serving a small base of pro players.

i would definitely play a rage sequel. that game is definitely an outlier to me. i still remember playing it like 3 times in a row when i first got it. i often forgot how amazing it was but i still keep it on my hdd prepping up after a hl2/ep1/ep2 run-through those two games to me are some of the best made sp games. what i like about rage is there isn't much cheap scares, i remember playing resident evil 4 on gamecube, but that to me was more like a hunter gatherer type of game, there wasn't much shadows there, but doom 3 left me soaked in sweat after first few hours and after that it was just boring and i really couldn't wait to finish it as it was more dreadful than scary.

it was fun to play, but it had a true John carmack id disapointing end.

i barely found an ending a disappointment, but many other people sight it. if you think about it any ending in a video game is more like "hey we got your money, here is a video". i wouldn't really think its bad considering a game was a blast to play, hl2 also has an ending that is unresolved but i wouldn't call it disappointing, games do tend to have weird story lines that i never get. in doom i also really don't get the story other than an excuse for a player to kill some demons. to me good stories never really change, its always some good vs evil bs so i really don't care that much.

i am not talking about the end video, which tnx for reminding me was also underwhelming; i am talking about the actual challange before finish a game. There was more challange and more spectacular mid game boss fight, then that sorry-ass fight with 4 waves of 2-3 mobs... i mean cmon. It was totaly and uterly underwhelming, even for id standards and they have quite a bad rep for endings.

i understand what you mean, but is ending really that important? i played that game like 5 times now and i really don't care that it ends like that, the meat of the game is gameplay and megatexture graphics, i spent a lot of time just looking at walls and symbols and trying to figure out what it means and to me story can be interpreted up to the player which i also kinda like. i also liked the car combat and spent a lot of time just shooting rockets at cars in the wasteland. to me rage is uniquely textured world that i can just enjoy looking at like a piece of art, the rest is just a bonus. if i want constant action i would rather just play or watch quake.

anyway the journey is also important ofc, but the end should also be important, as it is still part of the general story and should compliement the whole game.

I'm most worried about the graphics of Quake Champions becoming too messy. Overwatch has too many effects and stuff with all the ultimates, BUT the visual style of maps are clear and looks decent with low graphics. It could be done with a more lovecraftian style instead of the cartoonish style of overwatch. QC will probably be just as messy as overwatch.

Realize that Overwatch is doing Quake Champions a favour.. They are introducing over 20 millions players to a class-based shooter. Heroes like tracer, genji and lucio are closer to quake than what counterstrike is, especially in terms of speed. It can be quite a fast game. If you doubt, check cypher or any pro playing tracer or maybe cooller playing genji.

Compare some maximum 500 people coming esreality audience to potential 1 million players coming from overwatch.. I suggest Syncerror observe carefully to what overwatch has done.. Sure blizzard had an edge in terms of their brand, but I'm very impressed about how the excecuted it all. 20 million players after 5 months, 50+ tournaments before(beta) the game release and over 10 tournaments with 50-300k price money since then, including world cup. From a brand with no prior FPS experience.

Overwatch still has many faults and I hope QC is going to be a more rewarding experience. Likely Overwatch will be percieved as the more casual class-based shooter and Quake Champions more hardcore. But it has to be easy to get into, and this is where a class-based shooter opens up many possibilities - you can have some heroes that are easy to get into and perform well, while having some that has a longer learning curve. But in the end, proper matchmaking is what is gonna be crucial for QC.
