You have to choose situations when to be aggressive but when to be not aggressive (c) CoolleR
I am not afraid of someone who changed thousands of configs or sensitivities, I am afraid of someone who is playing on the same settings for 10 years (c) Latrommi
You could check out DDK's videos that he made analyzing duels in the pov of one of the players and pausing sometimes to explain the choices he has or the choices he made.
time investment required to become 'good enough' at duelling?
Well one level of skill that could possibly be considered 'good enough' is being No. 1, so I would say about 5'000-7'000 hours (quite low estimate).
If you want to become good enough that you can have relatively even games with people in the community, 2500-3000 hours might seem appropriate. Me and the people I play with you can probably compete with after 800-1200 hours. The best thing to do is to find someone else who's starting out and practice with them, as well as someone who can serve as a mentor. If you enjoy the game, matches with people of roughly the same skill level will almost always be fun.
How much quake have you played and how well do you now its mechanisms? Can you do b2r five out of ten times?

i used to play a lot of pub ctf and ca, ctf2 and dm6 in particular although i've never ever played in a pickup lol.
my aim is appallingly bad (last time i played 7 years ago my rail was 23%, rockets were 28% or something and lg was 20%) but i always used to play on a wireless connection so it might improve with a wired connection.
b2r is a no no for me. i've tried it but it just doesn't want to happen so that's an area for me to practise for sure, even though as far as i'm aware dm6 is no longer in the competitive map pool.
The question was more to get a feel for your movement skills. If you can't do b2r in QL, you will probably want to work on your movement. It's very important in cpm. This might be helpful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTx_rpSX2rs
Map is b0_beta6, which you can find on worldspawn (q3 map repository, google it).
I'm not sure how much a difference the connection type makes. I'm on wireless myself, but I don't hit any better against bots (=lag-free environment) than i do against real people. Pls report back after you switched as to whether it makes a difference.
Also, you can actually do b2r in a single jump in cpm, see 31:10 in the above video.
I don't know for CPM, but for vanilla ql be prepared for huge frustration, like losing 30-0 from the few people that will accept to rape u, for probably months. Most ppl nowadays (me included) have satisfied any thirst of owning noobs long ago and thus, u might even get yourself in situations of begging to get raped... not nice...
I love ql and especially duel, but I have tbh with u and no matter how many tutorials u read and even if u manage to time perfectly all items, with the aim and movement u described it won't make any difference.
my advice is to find few ppl (1-3) on ur level and play and prac vs them, or start with other modes like ffa, where things are much easier
cpma doesnt have a bigger playerbase than reflex tho. Difference is that reflex has matchmaking. I suggest he sticks to reflex, it's gonna be more rewarding considering he's not that experienced, and the game mechanics are 90 % the same.
The matchmaking system is especially good for new players.
the major thing is that i want to make gaming movies too and q3mme is much better and the community standard of frags is also much better than reflex, as far as i'm aware at least.
Duelling is easy as long as you remember the basics.
First, initial spawns. It may be that they result in you instantly getting control over major items, while putting the other player on the defense. That's what the game is and if he complains he is a pussy. If the roles are reversed, he is a lucky piece of shit and should kill himself. Make sure he knows.
Any time you miss a rail shot you did not even correctly aim, that's the opponent being pathetic for not getting shot. If they miss that's obviously bad aim and/or wrong weapon choice and they simply should learn how to play.
Ask them if they like Star Trek. If yes, warp. If not, tell him he has no fucking taste and his mother looks like tankjr, then warp even more.
If you are losing the game and are not going to recover, explain this lucky fuck what a noob he is. Otherwise, gg before he does.
LG. The size of your dick is proportional to your shaft accuracy. Make sure to shaft t3 fags on jumppads in ffa so that qlstats shows your true accuracy. Careful though, as this community consists of faggots (90%), you will get plenty of advances. I guess that's what you want in the first place, fag.
Dont fall into the cfg trap. Find a pov, a sensitivity thats comfortable and binds/controls that are easy for you.
Spectate players and watch how they move and aim. Imitate what they do and develop your own style. Form a mechanical understanding of how these players are doing what they do. Visualize how they move the mouse and press the keys. Using movement keys to stabilize aim is big, its a simple shortcut. You can see even evil and rapha doing this simple shortcut.
For me, other than just playing a lot.. Watching better players play will help immensely.
Learn to move around the maps, as plain and easy as it sounds, if you've got better movement you can get to positions and items quicker than your enemy.
