smaller packet size you send the less time CRC headers have to be checked, sending and replying to each packet sent before another is sent

MTU has no effect on UDP message size generated by QL. Setting smaller MTU might only fragment the original UDP messages resulting actually in more CRC calculations, and generally more processing, causing higher latency and bigger chance of packet loss.

as mentioned, if you have an xDSL type connection, it could be the result of interleaving (non-fastpath.) otherwise, no, that's not normal, but.. your last mile is almost certainly way more than literally 1 mile, unless you've had it provision checked by a tech. the loop length is gonna be way more than flight of the crow, &c.

then A/D conversions and media type + cable losses factor in, as well as number of transparent hops, which you probably also don't know. anyway, that's a pretty high number for a "gateway" or "first hop" or other endpoint given it's accurate, but you probably really don't know what's between you and the supposed first hop, if you're just going by some traceroute.

I gather, though, you're most likely describing a UBR/CMTS type node (cable modem.) in which case, yes, oversubscription is kinda par for the course. that kind of jitter would be a bit absurd for any modern HFC network, though, and is of enough concern to warrant a roll-out if you phone them up.

You can also try a vpn. I don't know about other countries but i hear most ISP's won't give a shit if your ping is high, they only care if your internet speed is slow.

The problem is my ISP. They're a local rural monopoly who charge absurd prices for unstable services. They won't even give their customers access to their own modems. If I want to open ports I have to call them and go through an hour of bullshit.

Sadly satelitte is useless when it comes to gaming or anything latency sensitive. Mobile can be good if the tower is near, but it's usually data capped and cost a lot more than landline internet:/

I'm on ADSL (copper wire). I had rather bad ping when i got the connection I'm on now, never pinged lower than 50 even on servers really close to me. Called my ISP and asked them what they thought the problem was and the technician I talked to told me they used something they called "pingblocker" to make ppls connections more stable but on the downside you got higer response times. Asked him to remove it, he did, and my ping dropped 30ms.

You can look for some VPNs in Dallas or somewhere close and try to ping them. If you find any VPN with low latency you can be almost sure that you gonna have good ping to Dallas QL servers from there. Don't buy it until you are able to test it.

Is it cable (coax cable with copper core), dsl, fibre?
What kind of modem did you receive from your ISP?
Can you access the modem in any way (to check signal levels for example)?

That entirely depends on why his ISP is the culprit, where along the route the trouble is.

It's possible to end up with a better connection on a VPN if once you've reached their service, they have fewer or faster hops to the destination, or just route around a problem you can't otherwise avoid on your ISP.

There are 'gaming' VPN's that specifically aim to attempt to do this for you, but you can never know if it will work for you until you try it, as your route to their service or the route it gives you may end up being worse than the troubled route you are on.

They do help some people though, definitely.

It is possible, but if the ISP is really interleaving then VPN won't help much on the actual gaming experience.
Don't forget that he gets 26 ms to the local hub..... I reach Frankfurt in 26ms with a home connection, (that's more than 800km, and the best/top kind of connection types/offers are not even available at my address).

But it's true that it's worth a shot, maybe it will help. Most VPN providers offer free trials.
