I kinda always knew sponge was incompetent outside of his small programming niche of whatever he was hired to do at ID, but it still appalls me that a game developer who wants "his" game to have a live community values raw cold data as "important". The tournament results mean nothing without reactions and context, a community is sterile without its culture and vibe. Even though ESR is shit as of recent past it doesn't mean it was always so. I suppose he is still bitter that he could never supress ESR as he could do with Quake Live forums and could never stop the ridicule of his terrible terrible ideas and vision about the game.

Well, the original post was indended as a snarky joke about how he has ended up with responsibilities that he is not competent for or wasn't originally hired to do. How he got the job is really irrelevant, but I assume he was hired for web programming or sorts (which he might be good at), but has had too big of a say /influence over gameplay decisions, because most of the things he says are outright garbage. So the joke was to say all of that in a bit different way than "sponge sucks at his job".

He isn't one of the game designers from what i know and certainly isn't in any position to just decide on gameplay things by himself.

All he can do is bring up his ideas to the designers which is what every developer at id can do iirc.

They didn't want to admit that I was right about the netcode (about it creating a +forward lg style game which didn't reflected the pure awesomeness that quake once was).
So rather than fixing the netcode they reduced the LG damage to counter the effect somewhat.

So they made a horrible decision a bit less crap by taking another bad decision.

Active employees : Around 200 people. id Software brand has value, but I have a feeling their company's scale is not big enough.
Two AAA games were announced between several years. Both games are id Software's main franchises.
Development for AAA Games are kinda serious works, a lots of effort has been made.

No wonder when you have a monster truck like Blizzard already first on this trend (FPS with heores), not only that but i belive they are much more experienced in making big ass good games.

idsoftware barely understood what ppl liked about Doom and Quake, and they barely had vision on what the game would/shoud look like.

The success of Doom1/2 and Quake 3 was to some extent due to hazardous things, just like strafe jumping or how excited people could get with a simple gun fireing lasers (LG/RG).

Blizzard was not the first, they just made the most noise.

Games with classes, abilities and objectives predate everything you've all said. In FPS games the first one was QW TF, from 1996. In games as a whole we would have to look at the 80s, maybe 70s even.

The thing is that Overwatch was a pioneer in terms of it being the first popular, well done game of its class that in addition to classes it also added ultimates, being more ability-based than shooting-based, and the concept of farming (in this case farming ultimates); all like MOBAs do. It's the first good MOBA-like multiplayer FPS; what people will call OW clones.

It's the same thing that happened with Wolf3D, Doom 1 and Quake 1 for example. It doesn't matter being the very first, as none of those were the first games with those technical features, but they were the first that were popular and well done. Therefore, Wolf3D and the others became and are known as the pioneers.

Blizzard took a lot from this game (they copypasted roadhog for instance from a class called veteran). It was developed by a small indie studio, it was buggy af and gameplay was fucked. But they did have the idea sooo

Both teams had towers, you had to push creeps through lanes to a main objective in the enemy base, you could buy (temporary) buffs from money gained killing creeps, there was a jungle and every five minutes in the middle of the jungle, there'd be a team fight over the 'annihilator,' a button that killed all enemy creeps and damaged all enemy heroes. It was closer to a moba than OW imo. It was TPS tho.

Dota was built through WC3 some 12 years ago. The original creator of MOBA styled games, everything out there has been built off of the surrounding concept...

It's better to not provide updates at the earliest stages of development, so that people don't start demanding the game to be released soon.

Plus at that time many things are subject to change, and many are about planning rather than making content that will make it to the final game.

I remember that id didnt published much on doom's progress after the initial showcase with unfinished furnace level (which was shown at qcon as an exclusive and much later to the general public) - until 2015 when they releasedn few more gameplay trailers

id just doesnt show projects in progress much, its their nature and could you blame them. Their PR department could do more publicity, but i guess they want it at a better time?

we were fed useless cvars that noone cared about every ql update instead of things that people requested from the start like gtv and i think its solely because of syncs incompetence. He didnt even adress a lot of the requested features because it was out of the scope of his ability so he gave us simple cvars that noone asked for so he could report to the bosses, yeah people are happy, constant progress... instead of telling them hey the people want gtv, but i dont have a clue how to do it.

quakelive had a lot of potential but failed hard. sync and sponge should have been fired a long long time ago.

If QC is anything like Doom 4 (another main game of id) then Syncerror working there practically doesn't matter. In Doom 4 he appeared at the veeeeeeery last part of the credits, in a role that mattered none.

The duo of non-programmers programming a game is not going to be an issue anymore. QC will be a main game of the company, therefore there will be programmers assigned to it both for release date and for afterwards support.
