You cant casting on this level and dont enjoy/dislike the game. CSGO is high competitive game, ddk is high competitive and this is it. He also was casting on last quakecon tournament, so there is no doubt he still love quake. :D

I've seen ddk play a lot of overwatch on his stream with Fazz, but to me it seems like he's one of the casters along with anders who puts in a lot of time to find cool little tricks around maps etc. so even if he doesn't play it a lot (which I don't know) the time spent studying the game really shows at least.

Hey dudes, I probably wouldn't have seen this if it wasn't for stermy, so you can thank him for letting me know there was a thread like this!

How do you enjoy casting it?

I enjoy casting it, it's a job I really look forward to, especially if the level of the game is high and it's even better if you're watching the best teams playing the playoffs at a big LAN, then it's really awesome. From a technical perspective, as a caster, it's also a great game for casting because of the tempo changes, the down time gives you a decent amount of time to talk about the game, the up tempo/big moments work really well with hype casting, there are a lot of variables going on, teams and players with specific tendencies or styles, ample amounts of storylines, etc. But like with anything, if it's a crappy game or just a bad level of CS then it's not so enjoyable, but that's normal. I have a lot of appreciation that it's essentially the same formula as it was well over 10 years ago, in a time where now all the other successful esports have been based on a better formula but been made more accessible and sacrificed some of the depth (sc2, LoL, etc).

Another point here is that I've been known to have maybe the worst casting schedules of anyone. Huge marathons with up to 8-10 games in multiple day stretches where the finishing time is between 3-6am. The quality of online matches is often a lot lower, or can be a lot lower than LAN games. If you're doing anything as much as that, you will lose some of your passion for it, that's natural. The real test is if it comes back-- and it continues to do so after those very grindy periods ;). After nasty periods like that I sometimes catch myself by surprise to subconsciously realise that I'm looking forward to the next cast when nothing has prompted me to think about it, I take this as a good sign! However if the schedules are manageable, I don't find that I lose any passion and I'm generally a lot happier.

Do you ACTUALLY enjoy those games?

I've played cs since 2000, 1.1, 1.3, 1.5, 1.6, CS:S, CS:GO, it's certainly safe to say I enjoy it. Although these days because I spend so much time casting it, I can't play it in the way I want (with a few friends that are good and play frequently) as I just don't have the time, pure MM and playing with randoms isn't really rewarding for me, I'm too competitive and care too much about meaningful practice etc.

How are the story lines in tournaments?

There's a lot of great storylines, CS has been around forever and some players have as well, just take Virtus.Pro or NiP as two clear examples of incredibly storied players. The level of competition is so fierce as well that you aren't short of story lines.

How casting it is different from Quakeish game?

There's more variance of what you can see, instead of 2 players in a 7 map pool you're watching 10. That's a lot of dudes that have to coordinate together! The slow pace is much slower; the perk being that you are able to get more analysis in there or you have the ability to fit more humour in there.

Are you earning at least good money for your casting career now?

2015 was the first time I had an actual salary where I felt like I had a real job! 2016 the money got a lot better to reflect the growth of the industry and the market value of talent, and was the first time I can remember in my life where I started not to worry about money. The freelance fees summer 2016 on wards have been pretty solid (although I do much less freelance work than other CS:GO commentators), especially with Turner Sports, unsurprisingly!

Are you interested in other games that are not FPS?

As far as casting? With the industry in the way that it is, despite my ability to learn games quickly, it'd be too competitive for me to succeed. And if I tried to be a hybrid I don't think I could find success unless it was as an FPS caster hybrid (Quake, CS, Diabotical, Quake Champions, Overwatch, etc) which I'm basically already doing I suppose :P.

As far as playing, absolutely, I've spent a huge amount of time playing basically everything. The notable genres that I focused a lot of time trying to get quite good at were Fighting Games (3rd strike, SSFIV) and RTS (wc3, bw, SC2 WoL, HoTS). I played a shit ton of DoTA over the years, thousands of games of 1 and just under a thousand games of DoTA 2 (although I stopped a couple years ago), so I feel like I get moba as well. I'm a gamer through and through, it's something I've been doing since I was 3 with my first competitive taste being Quake 3 in 1999. My first addictions being Quake 3, Diablo 2 and Everquest. But I love single player stuff as well, and you may at time see that on my stream, although I try only to play stuff that I think could in some way be entertaining or informative if it's streamed.

And can you tell me more about your work on Overwatch? Ive seen you cast it quite a long time ago, but you went back to CS:GO, right? The level of Overwatch casting, at least for English language casts, is simply irritatingly low. Any plans to help them out? :d

I'm not sure where things will go with OW casting just yet, I think it's something I could do quite well with more practice and time to focus on it -- and as long as I have enough warning before jumping in, it should be fine. I'd love to do some more casting with ZP, we have a good relationship and he's legit. The first question is whether schedule wise any of that stuff will fit in with CS:GO and my FACEIT (or Overlord Media) obligations as the company and CS:GO definitely come first as it is at the moment.

Quake Champions? Good question, I was talking to Stermy about it a bit yesterday. He's really excited about it-- as usual I'm very tentatively looking forward to it :P. I don't want to work myself up too much, but I do have a really good feeling about it. I'll absolutely be trying to compete if there's a duel mode. In reality I think team modes (ala TDM) will always be my strongest suit, but duel is so convenient for my lifestyle, I feel like I could realistically compete and I miss it. A LOT.

Sounds good. Since its been already stated that duel wont be the focal point of QC, I suspect they will either make a "pure" duel mode (without the different classes) or one that only incorporates the abilities as little as possible, maybe as PUs or so. Any thoughts on that? I know speculating about this is in vain, but hey, our comments might be read by the devs, so anything could be helpful :p
