id don't give a fuck about anything the community might want and the development of Diabotical seems to circle around weapon models and how they can be customized.
It wouldn't surprised me if Diabotical was delayed a bit or stayed in early access because they wanted to tweak the weapons a bit more. At the same time it wouldn't also surprise me if 2GD enabled hide_weapon after all that.
in DOOM you could hide weapon models, and force everything to use the lowest possible LOD. (which gives a picmip 10 look) I don't expect things to be different in QC but who knows.
The problem with community request is that they are always asking for something that already exists somewhere else. Game development is about inventing new things, creating new challenges for gamers and bringing joy in why nobody did before.
However Quake was always known of being highly customizable and configurable game engine and I think the QC will keep to that idea so don't worry about this feature.

Yeah quake was always customizable, even for coding. Unfortunately that amazing aspect has been lost since q3a for modding, custom models. They kept the config functionality, thankfully.
I doubt qc will keep the whole of customization with config, vid settings, force team models, et cetera. Certainly modding is out of the picture but I might be wrong. Even a little bit of modding functionality, like ql has, is better than nothing at all. And I can understand why game companies would want to keep the code locked up (haxorz), but I still hate not allowing others who may have free time to properly make a classic mod or even a sweet model to play with.
Tl;dr
The freedom for modding will be similar to ql. Better than nothing. Thanks sponge.
Let's take out all weapons in First person shooters and when you actually encounter an enemy instead of having to out play and out aim them, a dialogue pops up on the screen and then you are given a complex math problem to correct, first one to do so wins said fight.
True, but on the other hand those are probably the only things where facebook requires you to use your brain and some of them are kind of cute with little gooses and dogs and such.
The bad part is the 20k comments taking it seriously.
[18:12] heartlesss: Hello SyncError. Sorry to bother you again with that, but after some thoughts I went to the conclusion that we shouldn't be able to hide the weapons in QC, or that at least it's just a minor feature even tho most hardcore quake players might disagree with me. What I was thinking about is that you could just add something similar to /cg_drawgun 3, translucent weapons. But not the same way it's implemented in QL at the moment. What I mean is that you should add the possibility to have translucent weapons, but with textures/colors, just like in the game Warsow for example. That way if you want to add buyable skins for the weapons (similar to CS:GO), we can still see them, but obviously the weapons don't obstruct the view in 1st person, because of the translucent effect. Also, weapons size doesn't matter if you can make them translucent. For example if Overwatch had this option, it would totally change everything regarding maximum visibility, and like I said, even with big weapons models, as long as they are translucent, it's not an issue anymore regarding visibility, and you still get the immersion that hidding the weapons doesn't have. And strangely enough, when the weapons are bigger, it's actually a bit easier to aim because the representation of them on the screen feels more "natural/realistic" rather than having smaller weapons models that tend to go to the center of the screen (just like in quakelive with a FOV above 90). Oh, and it would be cool to have the weapons not dependant on the FOV, just like in Reflex. Ok that's all I had to say, sry for wall of text :).
So basically what we need is translucent weapons option, BUT, not like in QL but rather like in Warsow, where you can still see the textures and colors (in case there's buyable weapons skins etc).
