odd title for a Quake video

very smooth movements as well as very smooth mouse motion; amazing runs.

quality was crap but the rest of the movie was enjoyable. And music choice is pretty good imho.

Regarding quality, the bitching at the encoder in the readme* is somewhat unfair considering what's being pushed through it:
-Very fast full screen motion
-60 fps
-Extremely sharp images - no FSAA, no motion blurring, and apparently either high Anisotropic filtering or even plain gl_linear filtering.
(the encode got so bad it's hard to tell, but there are moire patterns hinting to this - got any still images from the uncompressed material?).


No FSAA isn't that much of an issue considering the low geometric detail but all of the rest is definitely a big factor. Improving the texture filtering would go a long way along with disabling high-res texture packs ; if that exists using a Quake client with some form of motion blur would help as well.

The "high-quality" texture packs for older quakes have too high frequency detail for this usage : on their own I find they look like cheap upscales of the original material - and in motion, they're a strain on the eyes and just ruin encodes.
High AF is usually considered good for image quality but since it keeps much of the HF detail it can be a good tradeoff to dial it down some for video, especially with these textures.

Going to the extreme of flat shading is probably not a good idea either - it would significantly help the encoding, but you do need some surface detail to keep some sense of speed so I'd think stock id textures with reasonable AF would be good for this kind of footage. It'd help even more if those maps had lightmaps built for them :(

I used gl_nearest for filtering, but it seems that it's not at all the best option when it comes to tilings.

Now, let's be honest: I'm completely ignorant about video making, and I didn't want to waste time learning, so I did what was the quickest.

I used demo_capture command from ezquake, with x264 codec, but I guess this quality was already too bad to be encoded once again.

Try
gl_texturemode "gl_linear_mipmap_linear"
From there, you can increase gl_anisotropy in powers of two, maybe not up to 16 with the high res textures though...
For FSAA, crank gl_multisamples as high as you can (8 or 16)

Regarding capturing with x264, indeed, the source encode is already quite degraded despite the bitrate.
It takes quite a bit more disk space but it's better for the end result to have lossless source material (or pretty damn close), traditionnally in other Quakes we used HuffYUV, still seems to be the case ; some use Lagarith, which is a variant of that.

If you have the codec installed you can change it in ezQ with demo_capture_codec hfyv

If you want to experiment with export quality, render part of your timeline to hfyv and muck about with the x264 (or whatever) settings based off that snippet, then render the whole project.

I mentioned capturing with motion blur - ezQ has gl_motion_blur (and a few associated cvars to tweak it) but the result isn't that great.

If you want to try disabling the high res textures, it should be
gl_externalTextures_bmodels "0"
gl_externalTextures_world "0"
... however in my previous nQuake installs that somehow never changed anything so I just use plain ezQuake with a few model skins and hud textures added.

Yeah, GL with whatever comes next! Learning how to make videos IS quite daunting so I totally get why you took some shortcuts. The good thing is you can get some good improvements in quality with little extra effort, so hopefully those tips will help somewhat :)
