Looks way better than Q4 ever looked. It really looks like a proper sequel to Quake 3. Hope I get picked for beta AND there are SA servers! Alternatively I should have fibre in a couple of months so I can host my own server.

From the Polygon article:

Favor (ingame currency) will be easy to earn, and trading it in for other Champions will be a frequent and fun way to spend it. But, there’s other ways to burn off excess currency as well. Players can spend favor on backpacks, which will enable them to take on rune challenges. Succeeding at a rune challenge will grant players reliquaries, which they can open to reveal new Champions and new skins.

So you can buy skins just by playing the game it seems...

I wonder if you can buy Favor or backpacks with real world money, but i'm pretty sure you will be able to do that... This is going to be the thing for them to earn money, just like in CS:GO, Overwatch, Hearthstone etc...

Edit: I just realised that doesn't answer your question on how much the skins will cost :D

Another Quake game for a minority of players with no commercial success?

- Overwatch has itīs graphical style besides other aspects to ensure that enemies are easy to spot. And here?

- hard to differentiate champions easily. Not easy to spectate

- action looks very fast and rather as a DM style of game. Might be too fast to actually enable a champion related gameplay?

It just looks that it will face the same issues Quake had for long time: having a hard time to provide a new or recreational player with enough moments of success whilst dealing with a lot of frustration.

Lets compare Overwatch vs what we have seen so far from Quake Champions and assume both games have the same amount of champions.

If you now apply the concept of "easy to learn, hard to master", I would argue that OW champions differentiate stronger in playing style and mastering them between each other than what we have so far seen in QC.

Why is this relevant? Because Overwatch provides for the average Joe far more ways to "replay" so to speak by changing into a different class and having to master this. This translates into higher engagement, better retention and due to that stickiness and amount of players online for a long period of time.

The action so far looks like the "core" of the game is very similar between the classes. I mean if you look at the videos so far, it pretty much looks like a Quake 3 gameplay with different graphics. Of course Quake players like it, but this isnīt the argument for commercial success.

If you want a great niche game with oldschool feeling, Quakelive, Reflex, Diabotical, etc provides it. If you want to have big player base, esport elements, streaming, a lot of events, etc you have to sacrifice some aspects from oldschool gameplay for this.

If it strays too far I'm just not gonna play it, like I haven't played Overwatch. I hope the balance they'll find suits me and non-Quake players. So far it looks decent. I'm not convinced that the fact that the core gameplay is the same among all classes is something that would make it boring for newbies (as in they wouldn't stay long).

The key problem for "newbies" is the simple fact that OW tries to enable each player to have successful moments due to ultimates, slower pace, big hitboxes, etc. This is something Quake as well as other DM style shooters lacked.

As a matter of fact, new players or even bad players had always a very hard life in DM shooters due to a lot of frustration elements. Most of them coming via the amounts of very quick deaths and a feeling of not being able to achieve much. OW managed to minimize negative emotions and increased the amount of players getting positive moments as well as the amount of positive moment you get per gametime.

My concern is that QC will end up too hardcore again. Yes it will stay true to its origins but there are ways how to combine these aspects all together under one hood. The simple fact that a blizzard shooter managed to implement design rules about visibility of enemies within an environment and id software allows maps to be the exact opposite, speaks sadly on its own.

How far do we really want to go with this "make it easy so new players feel good" thing?

Surely with matchmaking, it won't be necessary to lower the skill ceiling. I don't think these DM shooters you are referring to had functional matchmaking.

In reality, achievement is only achievement because it is hard. I think you're talking about the illusion of achievement. Yes, I know these big game companies seem big on exploiting human psychology these days.

Blizzard made enemies visible by using cartoon candy graphics, which is not everyone's cup of tea, and there are alternatives. Someone posted this in another thread as an example of what could be done for visibility in QC: http://imgur.com/NI4Dlx0

Guess there's still some nuts out there that truly believe Quake is so hard it scared people away from it (despite there being many videogames and real life games way harder than Quake that are way more popular)

If quake is not so hard, then there is no need to make it easier. Change it in other ways to make it more appealing while at least maintaining its skill ceiling.

"Enabling successful moments" can be done merely by adding functional matchmaking. This is obvious because when quake first came out, none of us had difficulty having successful moments.

My first deathmatch experience was in doom, and I had no trouble because skill levels were as low as mine. I don't remember "negative emotions" (except the occasional rage from losing). Those times were an utter joy.

So this really isn't about protecting noobs from rape by seasoned players. It is about catering to modern tastes.

There will always be a discrepancy between what the game needs to be to please the oldschool and what it needs to be to get player numbers. It looks like they have done a good job with that so far, but we won't know until we see how balancing works out in practice.

i find it hard to see players in OW , and if champions seems to be too hard to spot then that should be easily fixable . We have not seen any footage from a spectators point of view yet anyways ?

Agree that itīs also not easy but you can see that the designers took an effort to make it as good as possible whilst keeping both quality high as well as customisations.

Level graphic design with many bright and also often "flat" textures enables good visibility in OW whilst it still looks great. Now compare this aspect with the DM6 style of map we see in these videos. Just take notice of the walls in the bottom rounded area where shotgun spawns. Itīs hard to make it even harder to create contrast between a player model and a simple wall.

Best case: each class is painted in one unique color. We can probably understand why this is hard to do without sacrifying other aspects.

So whilst no solution besides bright enemy colors is perfect, OW as well as TF2 provide so far a better visibility than QC.

I'm surprised nobody is raging about the different hitpoints/armor ratings between the characters.

Anarki 125/125 hp while Scale 150/150 hp.

Is this their max amount or what they start with or what? I don't get it..

I'm not sure if it is accurate. Hopefully, they update the official page at https://quake.bethesda.net to include numbers rather than those useless bar metres on the champion pages.
