Enable QOS, give yourself static ip and assign yourself as priority #1 and rip off your own family.

I use this firmware from 4 years and it really helped in making Quake playable online without monstrous lag.

I believe that the "magic" is in the fact that the router is constantly pinging the ISP gateway to check if latency is ok, and if it isn't, it automatically adjusts bandwidth classes to fit to the bandwidth available at the moment.
We all know that sometimes the bandwidth of our connections it's quite unstable, and this is why the majority of routers QoS tends to fail.

If you can't/don't want to try Gargoyle, I've seen Asus QoS and it works well.
I tried DSL-AC68U and RT-AC68U, don't know about other recent models.
I tried the RT-AC56U 4 years ago and it QoS sucked big time (there were less lag spikes, but average ping was still horribile compared to Gargoyle).

Seems my router (tplink archer c7 ac1750 v2) don't want to upgrade.

Tried to follow the instruction on wiki, where I should flash ddwrt then c7revert then gargoyle.
The ddwrt upgrade showed the same error message.

I've flashed it to LEDE, and seems the SQM QoS settings worked pretty well. So i'm staying with LEDE.

OpenWRT (good firmware, bad QoS)
DDWrt (same than Owrt, but better interface)
Gargoyle (same as owrt but with a wonderful QoS)

I don't have time right now, but I would like to experiment with LEDE like you are doing.

Oh I also read about Tomato Firmware, but I never really give it a try.

The SQM QoS function actually don't offer plain priority settings. It is only optimising bufferbloat, hence I didn't give myself priority over other connections. It does the job anyways.

If other firmware offer even better latency reduction I'll be happy to try.

As Jamerio wrote, TPlink routers are dirty cheap and offer QoS, go for it.

The TP-Link Archer is a good budget router with considerably good QoS settings. If you have a lot more money, then buy one of those high-end gaming routers. I would suggest Asus gaming routers as they are loaded with features.

If anyone in your family is using apple devices forget about QOS. It does not work. I went down the same road your on trying to prevent the lag at home. Apple devices RAPE Internet connections regardless of any settings you might have

Seemed QoS worked with Apple products. I have 3 iPhones and 2 iPads sharing the bandwidth and now I never have spikes.

What? QoS takes place in the router, Apple devices cant hack the router and set the limit for itself.

Just remeber, QoS works mostly for outgoing traffic. Using QoS to moderate incoming traffic is useless most of the time. You can make some difference on TCP traffic, but not on UDP, for example. Also there's no shaping with incoming traffic, only policing.

If your idea about upload is wrong, then you've thrown your money. It's better to invest in a new internet connection.

Well, that's interesting. Try downloading a torrent using UDP with your QoS active and show me results. I think this gargoyle router may help with the usual TCP traffic (because TCP has congestion control), but torrents are another story.

My downward bandwidth is 20x of up, so I don't think that will be the problem.
Now I have stable 30-40 ping at anytime wiht QoS management, pretty impressive tbh.
