I've always loved (and played) Quake, but I was frustrated at id Software's handling of my beloved game in terms of marketing/ideas for the entirety of Quake Live, the QuakeCon incident, and how esports was treated at things like QuakeCon (making players wait 4 hours for finals while throwing t shirts to the crowd, bad tournament streams that miss half the games, etc). With the new Quake here and no one really keeping the news flowing at ESReality - still the home of Quake - I felt I'd do it myself. I'm not making money or anything from this. Just for Quake and the community.

They have different starting and max attributes from what I can see.

every champion has different hp/armor and speed caps

so for example nyx can only get 150 hp and 75 armor max while scalebearer can get 200/200

This bull rush brings some interesting elements to team play.

Bull rush the other team, perhaps the quad carrier. Players may choose to RJ to avoid the attack and the bull rush teammates could be well positioned to pick players out of the air.

Just once scenario, but with all the great quick-thinking quake players some of these abilities could really bring some interesting new variations and all new game play aspects to our beloved game.

I'm guessing if there's a champ that doesn't have strafejumping, it's gonna be scalebearer. We can see on his stat page that his overspeed value is only around 400, which may only represent his movement speed during bullrush. So it could be that he doesn't have strafejumping, and even if he does, a 400ups max is severely limiting.

Speed caps are incredibly lame, especially something like 400ups. You'd think limiting acceleration would be enough to differentiate champions. A speed cap would seem to make rocket jumping (or any kind of rocket propulsion) impossible. Or are they going to code in some retarded special case for that?

If they capped speed at the equivalent of q3's 2000ups, I'd be okay with it. :D

Have you seen his skills and passive? If he had faster speed he would be unstoppable.

Has more max health and armour, spawns with 50 armour, can use bull rush every 30 seconds which is stupid fast, and if he drops from a height and lands near someone he does damage to them too (that's his passive). I'd take a guess and say that he also is more resistant to weapon knockback, such as rockets, lg and nailgun, because he's way heavier.

It all evens out, the drawback of his killing power is moving slower and being easier to hit, seems reasonable to me.

It seems to me that if his acceleration is low, it would effectively limit the maximum speed he is able to achieve through strafe jumping (due to map geometry), especially since he is incapable of bunnyhopping, but it would enable rocket-based movements.

I can't really imagine shooting a rocket at a wall, and flying away from it at a mere 400ups (only 80ups more than q3's base running speed).

Reducing his acceleration would mean he would take longer to reach his current speed cap and that he would be able to exceed that speed in wide open spaces, which is nice because taking a long time to traverse such a space is quite boring.

But if you have different accelerations for different champions, it would be very hard to perfectly adapt to movement when you change champions. It will throw off your so-called "muscle memory".

The only character that has air accelerate confirmed is Anarki. You can also have crouch slide that allows you to accel on the ground into any direction whilst playing Slash.

I think the speeds given on the official site are the base speeds, like how 320ups is the base running speed in q3 and QL.

Maybe I'm too much of a purist or something, but I really don't get how on ESR of all places, a video is posted of a hit one button go fast and kill shit ability and people go "this looks great, I'm so hyped!"

Don't get me wrong, I'm hoping QC will be big and revive the genre, but I know I won't be playing it if it isn't Quake. So far, what I've seen in these teasers and what Timmy boy has been saying has made me feel like QC probably won't be "real" Quake.

It is fascinating how people bashed Overwatch for press x to win the game making it a moba game for casuals, but hype QC for the same reason.

This is not the Quake you've been waiting for.

Game is still in development, there's hope. Still, if there is no customization available, they will really have pushed the game out of its charm.

Customizing the character is something, but customizing your config is something else, it should be preserved, maybe even encouraged.

I think there will be the ability to create private servers with custom settings like turning off abilities, but I highly doubt any player will be able to join it through the matchmaking function.

So play the normal game, find mates, and invite them to your traditional quake server.

Unfucked quake already exists, and no one is playing it. It would be a huge disappointment for the next quake to end up in the same state because it tried too hard to please the oldschool.

IMO previous quakes were far too configurable, and this is coming from someone with one of the most complicated configs around. It just encourages people to spend more time tweaking the game than playing it, constantly seeking after any advantage they can get that doesn't derive from their skill as a player. I feel removing that burden would be liberating.

Most of those graphics tweaking options only existed as a means for people to run the game on bad hardware. It later became a way to have competitive advantage, and people grew attached to it. It even became its own aesthetic.

I'm all for "comfort" settings like changing gun position and especially mouse settings, but a setting that forces people to run quake in ugly mode to be competitive will result in a big loss of players. People will see it on twitch in this form and cringe. If QC is actually successful, only about 1% of players will find this ugly mode beautiful, so if they are using it, it is because they must in order to compete.

There is always going to be a trade-off that needs to be made between what we want and what needs to be done to get the players we want. If we don't want players, then older quakes will do the job.

We have a textureless game called reflex complete with modern matchmaking and more configurability than even QL, and even after its official release, it struggles to reach 200 peak players globally.

As for mouse settings, q3 only had sens and accel, and it was more than enough for everyone from noob to pro. In QL, I doubt most people who fiddle with the advanced settings even know what they are doing, and the game provides no way to view the resultant acceleration curve.

Of these settings, sens cap is probably the most useful. I reckon only a small percentage of people use power and offset, and those people could live just fine without those settings.

I am concerned that in the PAX videos, the settings screen only shows "sensitivity". At the very least, we need q3 style acceleration.

I hope we can dumb down textures and so on a lot actually, because my graphic card is old now and I want to play the game with some fluidity :p.

I just don't think it would be a good idea to put settings in there that become the de-facto standard, not because they are needed to run on old hardware but because they provide competitive advantage.

I expect there will be other settings to improve performance other than the equivalent of picmip 5.

Quake players are starved, and when you're hungry, you'll eat anything. :D

That said, this "ability" looks pretty weak. It's nothing like the scale of overwatch's.

It would be better if the ability was earned in some way rather than just a cooldown.

It's refreshing. That's really nice in a saga that hasn't gotten any new mechanic ever.

Plus as a whole the community is not as purist as it used to be. Nowadays lots of people here play Overwatch, have tried LoL, CSGO and so on, without discarding anything not Quake anymore.

Besides, exactly how many years do you have to play quake for to get an appreciation for its unique elements and desire those to be preserved? I'm not insecure in the least. I don't believe that having a long tenure or large number of posts on ESR, or any other kind of ESR status, is much of an achievement.

I have played id software games since the keen days; I played a lot of doom deathmatch in the 90s, and I easily have 6-12 months of play time in quake games. I don't consider myself especially skilled. I knew about ESR but did not need an account here until I wanted to vote on a frag video a friend of mine made. After that, I did not feel especially compelled to comment until QC closed beta, which sparked my attention.

If there are any correlations to be made, I'd wager that the people who talk here the most are most likely to be the ones that play the game the least. But I can't prove that, and I don't really care.

Most of the top players don't comment here very often. Even if they did, being on the same site as them is nothing to be proud of.

You know, there is a "scene" outside of ESR, which exists in the game itself. A casual player can rack up a huge amount of play time over the years without participating in anything that would necessitate entries on this site. I imagine there are quite a few of those in the Australian quake scene alone, let alone globally.

Take Fraze's dad for example. I don't know whether he has an account here, but I have not even once seen a post from him, and he has been playing since q2 and has more than 6 months of play time in QL alone. The guy is an addict, raised his sons on the game, loves the game, is not particularly skilled, but as far as I can tell, does not participate in online forums.

I made this name in 2011 when I first joined QL. Before that, I was stubbornly resistant to playing it (browser game, pfft), and I continued to play q3 in american servers with 200+ ping for a few years before an admin muting me over nothing pushed me over the edge, and I created a QL account. Pretty much every time I create a new online account, I use a different name.

I had 3.5 months play time on that account by the time id shut down their stats system, and that play time doesn't count the numerous other forms of stuffing around you can do in the game, like long warmups, specing, or offline play. If that's my time in QL alone, I can't imagine my estimate for total quake time is far from accurate. Granted, I didn't play q1 and q2 to the same degree because there was no low-ping internet when those games came out, and I played much less of them post-q3.

Trust me, now that I'm older, I'd much rather report a lower time because spending more than 6 months of your life in a single genre of video game with nothing to show for it is something most people would consider a waste of life. Actually my real join date is mid 2002.

Which means I can at least claim to be a semi genuine enthusiast of the series which spanned every version this century and saw the highs and lows when it crashed years before your even joined.

Not really - just there are plenty of examples of people who have knowledge before ESR registered date, so it is a poor metric.

Eg, I only registered here in the q4 era, but have plenty of prior experience, just found no reason to register here.

You reg'd at the start of 2006, that's a sizable investment and doesn't put you under the scope. This wasn't about saying if someone reg'd in 2005, they are more advanced than someone who reg in 2006.

This was a genral observation that people who reg'd on this site recently are generally less experienced at quake than those who have been here 5+ years. Especially as id made the game far more accessible, which in turn brought in a lot less focused users.

Do a poll of the 20 most influential quakers this century, I bet at least 80% of them have accounts here.

That's the gist of my point, experience in a game is usually logged with some kind of public record. There are exceptions of course, but when dealing with people who hide behind aliases, you have allow some margin for error.

Jan 2006 - Present still covers for you all the relevant modern quakes.

Quake 3 was still quite active at a high level or just ending.
Quake 4 had just come out.

That's a lot more encouraging than someone who joined at the end of 2013 pretending he's got form he won't tell you about.

If someone asked you when you joined ESR in 2006 do you have any histroy in quake, I suspect you would have told them and that history could be verified to some degree with a simple search.

He'd have been a name in a server, and I don't know about you, but I never felt compelled to write online posts about such names in games I played.

Yea, I have an easily verifiable pre-2000 history, but not on ESR hence why it is a poor metric to look at ESR join date. Pre-q4max I had minimal interest in the competitive scene, and was but in the modding and causal communities - which ESR doesn't, and never has, cater for.

Casuals are critical to the success of QC and don't leave much of a footprint - you probably can't find much record of me playing any quake, just the modding side.

People are desperate. If you go down the rabbit hole of reading threads about older games you'll find exactly the same behaviour, regardless of the game and whatever potential that game might have had. You'll even find people bitching they don't want another quake back in the painkiller threads. It happens everytime.

What's weird tho is how easily some people who were the subject of much public ridicule have managed to slip back in good terms with the userbase overnight and the lack of reaction to the changes they've already been making to esr. Didn't see that one coming, especially considering there are other platforms around where they wouldn't even have to bother trying to make such changes.

I fear it is blatant fanboyism. They literally announced that the game will separate competitive and casual play by gamemodes and that it will be pay2win (a valid view imo), and the overwhelming reaction was "oh boy, I'm getting more and more excited". Willits will say anything, and people will hype or at least make apologetic excuses for anything. Reflex or Diabotical would have been butchered for any of this.

Same goes for the spamming and majoring of news the game has gotten. There have been about 8 different threads created within the last few days, all of which were put onto the frontpage.

I was under the impression each champion would have a base running speed (just like in all the other quakes), and you can exceed that speed with strafe jumping up until you reach the speed cap (unlike all the other quakes).

Does this mean you will rocket jump off a wall and hit the speed cap for your champ instantly? Or have they coded in some ugly special case to the physics just for rocket jumping?
