This review and setup guide is what did it for me. Viewsonic coudln't buy a better ad for the xg2401. It's the first 144hz I've owned, or even spent any time playing on, so don't take my word for it but I'm nothing but happy with it.

But, yeah, 240hz is a long way off for me too. If ever. But I don't doubt therein lies another technical advantage. I'm sure this issue has had enough anectodal evidence thrown at it, but here's some more: Every other day or so I spend about 30 mins trying to super sayian my lg aim against ql bots. I increase the timescale until I can just handle it and work on it as such for most of that time. I'm not going to say where I'm at now, it's not much lemme tellya, but it's getting better. Then I jump back down to timescale 1 for a while so I can have a baseline and not lose a feel for proper timing. (Dropping so quickly between speeds, movement especially seems like it does in a nightmare when you're trying to run away but just can't.) Geez this is dragging on....Anyway, to the point: I've fairly convinced myself that, on my 144hz anyway, by increasing fps in game I'm able to achieve a noticeable and repeatable improvement in accuracy at least until above 200fps. I'd guess that a 240Hz monitor would only improve matters. Though there may be other limiting factors. As another anecdote, I happened to be in-game (CA) while a master lg'r (pretty easy to spot) was playing one of his first matches after purchasing his 240hz monitor. He seemed pleased as punch. Maybe he was a shillo tho? :)

So, on the one hand, 240hz monitors could very well be an advantage for the people who can afford their requirements. Which kind of sucks because atm it's an expensive barrier to skill. But on the other hand, they won't benefit everybody and it would be silly to hope for a way to limit the abilities of those that do benefit.

Well i think if you have the hardware on the cutting edge you will always be able to achieve that much fpsage--no matter the title. And if you don't, then you won't. NBD. I don't plan on ever having that good of shit and I don't really care. I doubt 240Hz would make enough difference for me to justify always updating anyway. You got to admit, that's near some superhuman shit right there. But I've played against people I know it would benefit.

As for QC: It's your choice, but it looks like progress to me, and I'm going to give it every opportunity. Yep, id software fucked up bigly with the QL engine.

In Q3, I can play on those big Rocket Arena 3 maps with full 16 player server and fps are stable as fuck.

Not to always tilt the argument with you, but I'd much rather play QL than Q3. Even with the wonky netcode, and hiccups, and less than optimized execution. God knows I've shat on the devs of QL more than once during a game. But they were still figuring shit out back then. And they're still figuring out now. I absolutley respect people who still play ancient modes of quake, but I can't see why some people won't admit that a whole shit-ton of progress has been made. I don't know. I think that sometimes people think that something that's new is just a new gimmick. When really it might be new because progress has been made. I'm never going to look for one in an ever disappearing supply of genuine wmo's, because I really like my optical mouse and it's all I need. If a wmo is all you need, then cool. But it's an outdated technology and that's the truth of it. I feel the same way about quake.

And, not to point fingers, but some people think the idea of even second-displaying match timers in item control games is pandering because that's not how it was in CPMA. Never mind second timers for each indivdual item in the HUD. I have no idea how your handle is meant to come across, but it looks like you've drawn a line and refuse to cross it. Oh, before i forget to mention again, the colors and such of TN panels are always shat on, but I love watching movies on my monitor. In fact, that's the first thing I did with it. Sharp, bright, and great color, imo. And I have a really beautiful IPS on my laptop to compare it to. Unless you have like pitch-perfect color sense or need absolute fidelity, like, say, you are a colorphile, you are probably never going to care.

You'll probably be happy with any one of those panels. The LG is about 50% more for the same specs but (I guess?) better colors. Like I said, I'm nothing but happy with my choice and I won't have to worry about getting another monitor for a long time, so that's pretty cool by me.

Playing a game for graphics only is incredibly shallow. Those people deserve 60Hz.

It's not graphics ONLY, but it is fair to say a lot of people get a more immersive experience in certain types of games (not quake) if the graphics are good. If a game is supposed to be a realistic shooter, then I'd say graphics are important.

Anyway, these games are usually so slow that 240Hz is completely unnecessary. I just found anon's comment about getting 240fps in ANY title a bit funny. Turning the graphics down so low (if the game even allows it) kinda defeats the point.

Unless your frame rate is increased too, I wouldn't expect any significant benefit from 240Hz---unless your monitor is configured to do some kind of processing or buffering tied to its refresh rate.

The main thing is just that if you're not using a form of vsync, you have the frame rate and refresh rate a bit different. So 250fps on 240Hz would be fine, I'd imagine.

If you're on 125fps, I can't imagine why there'd be an improvement going from 144Hz to 240Hz unless the monitor was improved in other ways as well.

250 fps does cause frequent dropped sounds on my system and some really strange behavior otherwise. Play a full game of FFA @ 250fps on it and you're going to have a bad time :( Without a doubt. If you are a dueler, this is unacceptable. But I still get dropped sounds at 125 and 200 fps, too. Again, part of the game.

My game freezes for a split of a second sometimes, like the lagometer constant red line temporarily disapears and makes a gap of that split second. I hate that but was never able to fix it.

No, I don't. It was something that I couldn't figure out for a long time, so I guess I should have made some demos. I don't typically autorecord, though for some reason demos keep popping up in my folder.

The most annoying quirk is when projectile weapons are being fired at me from behind. Sometimes there'll be a compression of sound so I won't hear it until it's right on top of me. I'm not making this up, btw. Or talking about anal intercourse.

Another dropped sound problem that you will never get rid of is, for example, losing item pickup sounds when you're being attacked so you don't know if you picked up the item or not. I know there is a difference between a dropped sound and a sound that is too low in the mix to hear, btw.

Looks like it all comes down to the 2 LG models and this Viewsonic.

The BenQ ones are said to have shitty colors, and the Viewsonic is also said to have shitty colors on that thread, even tho some managed to fix it tweaking the settings. Some people say the get ghosting with "ultra fast" setting and have to set it to standard or advanced so not sure about that..

Why don't you research it yourself instead of asking absolutely everything? Everything Abso has said here is correct anyway, so just buy one of them and be happy. If you want 1080p then:

A) Without AMD FreeSync or NVIDIA G-Sync buy: LG 24GM77

B) With AMD FreeSync buy: LG 24GM79, Iiyama GB2488HSU-B3 or Viewsonic XG2401

C) With NVIDIA G-Sync buy: ASUS PG248Q, AOC G2460PG or ACER XB241H

It doesn't matter what you buy from these for competitive shooters, they are all as good as eachother really. A and B are better for colors than C, I would avoid C unless you really wanted G-Sync. C is good, but when run at 120Hz, anything above is overclocked. A, B & C all fall short to a true 8bit panel like on ASUS PG278QR.

The 24GM77, I don't like the buttons. It sound a bit dumb. "Black St.". It's like a button that says "Black street". In the new one they changed it to FPS, RTS etc which makes sense and actually useful to store different profiles there.

Low input lag, very responsive, worse colors than LG, OSD and its controls are not as awesome as the LG, good connectivity, few extra gimmicks. Stand is ok. Usually comes with 5 years of warranty.

I bought the LG "blindly" in that regard btw.

My 2233rz also moves when I move my mouse and type, the solution is easy, I push it back against the wall and before it meets the wall there is a shelving which luckly stops it from moving.

I just switched from 2233rz after a long time to 24gm77 so I'll throw in my 0.02$.

First of, 2233rz has noticeably better picture quality. Out of the box it comes with colors way off, as well as gama, but it's really easy to calibrate just by using OSD controls. You end up with quite good picture quality, with inevitable TN limitations of course. I use nice IPS panel at work, and I can say that 2233rz is okay to use after that, blacks and viewing angles being the most noticeable downfalls.

On the other hand 24gm77 picture quality can be summed up with one word - shit. Out of the box it comes looking extremely washed out. Using OSD controls is no good really, because adjusting it just fucks up the quality as described here. That means if you, for example, move contrast form default 70 to 69 you get noticable loss in contrast range, most noticable with dark shades. The best option I found to calibrate it was using nvidia control panel. You can get it to look decent enough to not throw up by looking at it (as with default settings) but it comes with a price - you end up with banding and some graining on dark sections - but IMO that sacrifice is worth it. Also, the screen is very bright, so I found 20-30 range to work the best for me.

Regarding input lag - the difference is not that noticeable. LG feels a bit better to me tho. As for extra 24hz, it's nice, but it isn't noticeable.

The advantages of LG over 2233rz are obviously:
- bigger size, which manifests mostly in width, you get wider peripheral vision as well because 16:9 ratio, while the height gain is negligible (as shown here)
- full HD (16:9) resolution (more pixels + many games work only in 16:9 so you don't get black bars as with 16:10 monitors)
- lower input lag?

That's it. Is it worth it? I don't know. I expected the quality of the panels to increase over the years, but it seems that it even degraded. It's hard to believe that old 2233rz is so superior in picture quality while everyone goes around praising LG for nice colors.

p.s. - yeah, picture quality isn't a must for quake, but it's nice to have if you use only 1 panel for everything.

I got the XG2401, similar experience to you. I think 2233rz had better picture quality, I don't care about nerds doing tests, im judging by my experience. I have tweaked it (also came in looking insanely bright), I have adjusted to it already, but I can't say it was what I expect. There is an overall washed out feel, must be backlight or something, even tho in this test with a black background is nothing worrying:

It's superb for gaming tho, really smooth, specially Quakeworld with the 308 FPS. I use 125 fps in QL because I can't have guaranteed 250 at all times.

144hz, not that many difference compared to 120hz. I do notice less ghosting compared to 2233rz.

Anyway, I hope that by the time this breaks in 5+ years (since capitalism makes stuff that breaks increasingly faster) there are finally OLED monitors for gaming.
