The "evolution"of games praised in the 90s did not come. There are mainly two big causes.

First I'd say there is the technical fault which lies mostly from the fact that the elements in games today does have disproportionate properties: ie in a moba your character uses around 30-40 maybe even 100 different properties -walking speed speed, running speed, HP, DPS+the place you occupy on map + various abilities
while
all the other elements of the map does not have more than 3-4 maybe 10 properties so basically after 30 years of "progress" a wall is still mostly an unmovable unbreakable visual element with some changeability characteristics like in the newer Battlefield -still a wall does not have even close to 50 properties to make you feel the world of the game is real.
I've said abt modern mobas like Dota i.e.: why are trees not burnable, why don't trees have properties so a real powerful blow can chop it down to block the passage or to allow all kind of creative stuff?
All elements in games should have maybe 100 or maybe even 1000 properties each, not just the players and those primary elements that the programmers want interacting for gameplay "mechanics".

The second fault lies heavily on the cultural degradation of our world of our Western society who does not have a consistent and strong direction anymore because with every foreigner and every foreign element it injects inside its body it loses its identity.

I would say classes are but a device to make the game simpler while giving it a fake sense of getting deeper . CLASS based Is a meme to take away item based games. More classes make it impossible to balance making classes a burden and a detriment even more than with only a few like in team fortress . Class based is a poison to what makes quays better than everything else

Class in QC would not be so bad if they would find a common ground from which abilities arise. Abilities on the other hand would only be acceptable if it would have secondary weight on any given match, with notable exceptions, to be the cherry on the cake, so to say. In order to do this they should decrease the availability of abilities to one or two/match, maximum 3 but not more. It still raises the question if this would not be too much, but given the amount of mistakes even pro players make in a match might not be.
What I think Bethesda will basically do is to repeat the mistake of Elder Scrolls Online Skyrim, when they had the disastrous idea to use insane frequency regarding the spells. Instead trying to use a realistic oriented battle style (hello For Honor) with magicka involved in a much harder -and by discrete means smart -way -preparing a spell for hours, slow magicka regeneration taking an entire day or even more to fully regenerate, and the existence of potions be very very rare so only once in a week you could gather 1 or 2 vials -they created that horrid game mechanic that resulted in countless spells, spell after spell after spell+colored mambo-jambo bubbles and all that shiiiiiiiiiittttt.... looking like some dishonorable guys there decided to fuck up the artistic work of game designers and mappers, saying "hey, let's take a big dump on their work in a very noisy and colored way, under the pretext of "spells"".

So unfortunately QC will suffer the same fate, with too frequent abilities basically annihilating the concept of quake deathmatch, stealing the merits of skill or replacing the skills of quakers with specific sets of skill (based on choosing and using properly the cheats -I mean abilities). If there is any doubt the adding of counters on major items signals very clearly the things to come. Add in the huge mass of console idiots who will ask to be pleased as well in as many unquakeish ways as possible and you will get the complete picture of the disaster to come.
