QC is close to current games. Remember QL is a 10 year old game by now and that all QL pros are now playing Overwatch. Q3 is not the only reference anymore, whereas when Q3 was released Q2 was the only reference since that's what we were still playing.

Coming from Q2 CTF I can relate to his gametype choice in QL being lolca. Old school CTF players (myself included) find Q3/QL's so boring and so simplified that then might as well don't play it. So in QL we end up playing what 90% of the playerbase is playing which is CA. In our time duel wasn't a thing so we aren't that much into duel in QL, and the few people that were into Q2 TDM (a minority back then) do like QL's TDM (if they also like idling on IRC to find a match).

Lastly, have you actually played QC? Right now in the Discord community channel we were actually talking about how similar it is to previous Quakes, in conversations including QL pros, top tier players and world champions from Q1 to Q4, community people (me) and all. Actually those people are also saying they would like more change from Q3/QL, such as making dm6 not be the main map. So the community right now thinks the complete opposite way than you.

Each new change needs to be assessed independently. The fact that past changes to Quake worked provides absolutely zero indication about whether QC will work---especially since the new changes are nothing like the old changes.

"Open minded" just means trying the game to see whether it is any good or not. It doesn't mean you have to shut off any part of your brain telling you there may be problems with it.

Also, quake doesn't have more of a "toxic" community than any other competitive game imo.

The only way to modernize Quake is to give it modern graphics. Essentially everything else about it is more or less fine. If you add a ton of other bullshit to a recipe it may turn out terrible and that may be what Quake Champions is. Changing what makes the game good runs the risk of it feeling like a chinese knockoff of Quake. I think QuakeLive looks OK but if it had graphics like the new Doom it would meet both requirements for what made Q3A good in the first place. Amazing engine, awesome graphics for the time and totally addicting gameplay. I didn't get an invite but I've heard some people lamenting how it doesn't quite feel like Quake. The abilities aspect doesn't really worry me because I'm sure it's something you don't have to play with and honestly seems like noob bait to me. Im not sure what it is, gameplay wise it seems like nothing major changed at first, but everything feels more floaty and it kinda has this "Halo-esque" feeling, which isnt surprising given the engine and "additional work by saber interactive". DM6 now also feels weird, like the distances are off or something.

But all in all its not a failure, the standard is just too high, though on the other hand i dont think it will be enough to gather a major playerbase.

I would also like nvc rather see a focus on CTF, in the current environment Duel doesnt have much promise to carry the game anywhere, and the Dom/TDM mix seems pretty weird.

Biggest problem atm though is the queue and client error.

Yeah queue time sucks and the odd crash here and there but so far the game actually feels like quake.

I suggest some additional test modes to be implemented into the game in this stage of development

1. Adding an additional layer on top of the already existing ones*:
-specific damage based on specific materials or to put it more simple on specific characters: ie characters like robot must not be damaged at all by gauntlet, take little or no damage from bullets and take substantial damage from the RL; RG should freeze him for 2s with little damage -10-20 or to hamper his ability to gain/pick up armor until he dies, like -10 maximum armor for every rail hit; robot char should also not pickup health, only armor or have a different functionality bar instead health/armor, (maybe) composed atm with armor, on which you could build additional properties or elements, if needed

2. Some modifications or adjustments:
-robot again should have the ability to scan through walls -throw magical abilities out of the game, this should not be OW/WoW universe, the use of magical powers along respective characters in QC should be removed, or use proper religious/scifi combinations like in the predecessor Q1 game


3. Bring James from Q3 Team Arena! The presence of a Templar would pump up many newcomers -it has been a formula used with great success by Blizzard in Diablo 3, practically almost everyone loved to build their Templar character- still the coolest in Diablo III imo

Don't use too advanced formulas in texts regarding technology in the game: ie the explanation why she is invisible is that she would fall into "another dimension"??? falls flat as anti-intellectual delusion even in the field of theoretical physics. Better use here allusion to demons/hell or anything with religious connotations, better "falling into the dark world or smth" than the pseudo-scientific approach -this is what makes me cringe to modern rpg games like Divinity Original Sin ie, that they tend to be credible in dubious fields and so they become too pretentious when putting in the light the fate of the "Universe" to please contemporary locusts -avoid that term as much as possible, "Universe", for this word is dangerously pushing any game toward a kitsch -unless we deal with a true hardcore scifi theme. Mechanics of games in the beginning of the XXI century are too simplistic. Why does all elements of the game excepting players have so few abilities or properties? Why doesn't a model have more physic properties? This lack of additional properties is what makes games be so silly in aspects that cold be else avoided.
