If you go up against him as Anarki in direct combat, your main advantage would be that you can hit absurdly high accuracies against his slow movement and large hitbox. But wouldn't that advantage be nullified as soon as he puts up his invincibility force field? :D

I don't think that the movement speed would affect mouse rotation so giving the mouse rotation speed homo ability does not do so great or no greater than usual against any enemy taken by surprise

On the trailer they don't show the character is painfully slow and its hitboxes are huge. It would be the very worsr character for duel.

In the first beta the characters that dominated (in FFA and TDM) were all the smaller ones. Anarki, Slash, Nyx, Ranger, Visor. The rest just weren't used at all (by anyone in the top8 in the match), to the point it seemed like the gimmicky big characters that rely on abilities just weren't included the game.

As I said somewhere else, having a high starting health and armour doesn't mean much unless you intend to die to get it back. You actually need to be able to get more out of health and armour pickups.

Clutch's ability is very powerful, but I guess that he won't be using that all the time and will be getting destroyed during the cooldown period.

i am very surprised what id games look like today in a positive way after upgrading gfx card i really see what new games look like, i really hope id optimizes all their games for people with lowend rigs to at least get a smooth framerate, nothing bothers me more than a sub 30fps framerate, even moreso than bad gfx etc. i am really looking forward to what amd apus based on new ryzen can accomplish as i like rigs that don't make too much noise or heat.

From what i heard, this metal mofo is just a junk. So as other slow dummies with an acre of hit-boxes. For now.

He is just being destroyed by faster chars as Slash, Nyx, Anarky and alike. Maybe the balance will change but for now he's simply everybody's bitch.

Actually, it would be impossible to balance all the champs for all game-modes at the same time. Even if we forget about the Duel, the value of slow characters in TDM or object-oriented types like CTF or Sacrifice would differ a LOT.

How about Visor?

Visor is one of the tops now as well, fast and have a lot hp at the same time.

And Galena.

I'd say tier 2.

Tier 1 = Anarki, Nyx, Slash. The nimble CPM-ish characters.
Tier 2 = Ranger, Visor, maybe Galena. The Q3-Q2 like chars.
Tier 3 = Everybody else. Includes all the big characters that are painfully slow and that rely on their abilities to frag or survive.

In the end the champions that dominate in QC so far are the Quake-likes. Speed, getting items and positioning are the best stats in the game, just like it has always been the case in all Quakes. The abilities ended up only being small additions but nothing game changing (with the exception of Nyx but I can see that being nerfed).

That's why QC is only criticized by people that have not played it (ESR) while it is praised by those that have (QC Community Discord channel). When actually playing the game it's obvious the best Quakers win and win by using their Quake skills, and the gimmicky characters just aren't used.

My only criticism of the game is that I'm a bit sick of dm6. I hope that somehow it doesn't become the main map of the game again. For example the map with the green railgun pit is fucking amazing so I'd prefer that to be it.

There are imbalances in any class based game. It hasn't yet been determined if it's optimal for the meta in team based games to include lower tier champions though.

With such imbalance, there is no reason not to make a team of all Nyx. And forcing people to use only one of each hero per team is ultra crap imo---because someone always gets lumped with the shit hero they don't really want to be using.

Who really wants to be a bullet sponge in a Quake game anyway?

Right now it's balanced in a Dota1 kind of way. Half the characters are viable for competitive play so you'll always see them, half are not so you won't seem them in ranked matches.

I'd say Anarki is the only character that's a bit above the rest. Like A+ tier if you want (not S tier). The rest of the viable characters (tier 1, tier 2) are quite balanced within each other, mainly because all characters use the same weapons (way more uniformity than in MOBAs) and those in the tiers 1 and 2 share similar stats. As a whole the game is not imbalanced at all, which is quite a feat considering it's in closed beta state. You never see a game with only Anarki's or Nyx's.

When balancing games the devs decide what is going to be stronger based on how they want their game to be. Some characters and weapons are better and others worse, being unbalanced on purpose. It's not only a coincidence that Torbjorn sucks for comp play: it's made to be that way. Same with the shotgun in Quake games not being as good as ranged weapons. So in QC, for us it's really nice the best character is the one that tends to be the most fun for us (Anarki) and the worst ones those based on using abilities (the robot in the trailer), and I think that's not a coincidence but a decision made by id software, being an actual statement about QC being more FPS skill-based than MOBA based.

But more importantly than tier lists themselves, the thing is abilities don't matter as much as in OW, which is what the Quakers actually wanted. For example Anarki is ahead because it allows more freedom for us Quakers, but not because of pressing Q to win.

And above all, what matters the most is that pretty much all characters and weapons are fun to use, including the robot in the trailer which is one of my favorites (great for camping). When the complainers on ESR get to play the game they will realize QC is actually fun and addicting to play, and that beneath the sea of visual gimmicks hides a really good game.

People here could easily get a key so anyone that wants to play can do so, instead of complaining about something they haven't played. PM Syncerror here, ask people on Twitch chats (many of us made several accounts. I share two keys with friends), ask in the Quake IRC channel (I think there's also an official Discord but no player goes there), etc.

Do QC devs listen to your feedback, though?

No one knows. It's only been the first weekend of closed beta so far, so not enough time to conclude anything.

But there is a closed beta feedback forum, and top players are already organized in the QC Community Discord in case they want to contribute as a whole.

Personally I'm really liking the game so far so there's nothing I want to contribute (besides getting Chilean servers for South America -- Brazilian servers always suck).
edit: And for me it'd be fantastic if they could add a Q2 KOTS mode. That's FFA with leveling up your characters' weapons, stats and abilities as you choose, saving the progress on the cloud, and balanced in such a way that a level 1 player can kill someone that plays all day. It was amazing; and actually is a formula that newer games are using such as Destiny.

Whatever they could do to make a slow, large-hitboxed champion equal to the others would probably be offensive to most Quake players.

It's kinda annoying though if it forces you to use a champion you don't really like style-wise. I was getting the impression the whole personal style thing was a big part of the game, what with all the customizations and stuff.

I'm not getting the shotgun comparison though. I see QL weapons as reasonably well balanced as per my definition of balance, which does not require all weapons to be equally powerful. They just each have their own scenarios in which they are useful. It doesn't sound like that is the case in QC with the champions. You just do not ever use a shit champion if you want to win. Those champions are just for shits and giggles whereas the shotgun will have times when it is necessary and will get good usage.

I'm not sure I feel comfortable asking Sync for special treatment, and besides, there are no servers yet in Australia as far as I'm aware.

ESR users want QC to be Q3/QL with new graphics. Yet Quake hasn't been a competitive game for years because it's been the same Quake copied over and over.

If QC is another remake of Q3 (like Q4 and QL), it's gonna be dominated by the same niche community of hardcore gamers and no new players will ever want to play it. So no big competition will want to pick it up and it will die after 2 years max.

I hope this game is unplayable for our old asses. I hope top QL players will get fucking humiliated by ex CS or CoD players. That would be a big reset.

Why would you want the game to be "unplayable" for us?

It would have to be really drastically different for hardcore Quake players not to have an advantage in the game, and based on what megaman3 was saying, that doesn't seem to be the case.

What I mean really is that I want the game to be genuinely different and new in term of gameplay. Like Q2 was a big change from Q1 and Q3 was a (quite) big change from Q2.

Of course the skills acquired in the different games could (and would) translate into a new Quake game but I'd like people coming from UT/CS/CoD/LoL or whatever the kids play these days to have a chance at becoming top players.

Otherwise it's gonna be the same small player base moving from QL to QC and it doesn't seem enough to bring Quake back into the big competitions for a long duration.

I don't think that is possible anymore. There are too many FPS essentials that are transferable. They are kinda immutable laws of Quake. Y'know, things like aim, movement, dodging, positioning, etc. Other games tend to use a subset of those that are used in Quake games.

There are no radical weapons in QC either; they all use standard aiming modes.

Anyone with the mentality needed to become a pro will persevere through these initial difficulties. A really talented player will be doing pretty well within a year of playing if they stick to it and practise hard.

And why is that ? Being a hardcore quaker doesn't make you special. It just means you've been playing the same game for 18 years.

For all we know the next Cooller is a "CoD kid" that just didn't want to invest time into Quake Live because, frankly, that game sucked.

When Quake2 got released, it was all different compared to Q1. No more shaft, a chaingun, handgrenades, a railgun, new maps, new RL speed, strafe jumping instead of bunny hopping, etc.

Everybody had a shot. Some top Q1 players adapted quickly and became top in Q2 too (Thresh), some tried and failed, some didn't bother because they didn't like Q2.

The same thing happened with Q3. I don't know the history of every top player but I'm pretty sure they're not all ex-Q2 or ex-Q1 players.

Q4 brought a couple of new things but essentially it was really close to Q3 and I didn't like that.

So what I meant with my initial comment was that I'd like QC to be as different from Q3 as the 3 original Quakes were different from each other.

CoD and the various Quakes are so far apart that they may as well be different hobbies entirely. No differences between any two Quake games was so great.

What makes a hardcore Quaker special is dedication, not something your average CoD kid has.

Let's be realistic: CoD is an extremely DUMB game by design, and it doesn't make up for that with any high level mechanical skills. If some CoD kid didn't want to invest time in Quake because he thought it sucked, there is no way he is gonna be the next Cooller.

He'll either be the type, like the vast majority who play such low-tier games, who don't invest in any game but still want to feel they are good, or he will be the type to invest in a game that is nothing like Quake. You can call it Quake, but it won't be Quake. It will just be another CoD or OW or whatever. Hopefully, QC won't be that game. Of course, people from outside Quake can do well, but they won't be casual gamers.

A Cod Kid has 0 chances in any game that can be called Quake with a straight face.

Also, I'm not familiar with Overwatch, never played it and was never able to watch it for more than 30 seconds without the need to close the stream as fast as possible, but it seems the barrier capacity is clearly taken from an OW character too, which is a shame indeed but which might be a strategy to try to attract players familiar with this character (Reinhardt apparently) in Quake.

Not only is that ridiculously anti-Quake and more like an attempt to turn Quake into another retarded MOBA/Overwatch spin-off, but that shield ability is clearly overpowered.

Quake, especially at high levels, is a game of finesse, and those 'racial' abilities, if that's what you can call them, throw a spanner into the game's mechanics.

That'd be a fair comparison if it weren't for the fact that Bethesda/Zenimax is a shitty company. An EA 2.0. I'm speaking as someone whose had personal interaction with corporate Zenimax lawyers. And everything I've read about the whole Carmack/Zenimax lawsuit, where they brought in some liars-for-hire regarding code written by Carmack, affirms what I already knew about Bethesda/Zenimax.

I'd rather see indie developers (Reflex or Diabotical) succeed and carry the mantel than see Bethesda/Zenimax shit on the legacy of Quake.

Besides, technically illegal or not, Carmack's research done at id software was an investment by id software (or Zenimax) whether they instructed him to do it or not (pretty sure Carmack would always have worked autonomously on whatever he liked), and you'd think they'd want ROI without that knowledge just walking out the door to benefit some other company.

I'd also be very surprised if Carmack didn't take documents with him. That's a very common thing to do (I've seen it many times), especially by someone who feels like they are his.

Also, the Reflex gameplay as a whole is more original than Clutch is as a character design/model. A fair analogy might be whether every car made since the Cugnot Steam Trolley is a ripoff. Whereas what id did with Clutch was take someone else's car, changed the colors, added a spoiler, and called it a totally different car.

Your link doesn't work, but I'm guessing it is about Carmack's Facebook post where he talks about "non-literal" copying of code and goes off on a spiel about all things being the same given enough abstraction, and the scientific basis for similarities---as if it is easy to show using objective metrics that two pieces of code are based on the same knowledge.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure whatever code Carmack wrote might not have been literally copied, but it would have been based on knowledge he acquired through research he did at id software, paid for by id software. Imagine that, id software's main graphics guy getting paid to do graphics research, independently in whatever area he liked, with the idea that it would later benefit id software, like it had always done in the past.

If Carmack wanted to do his own thing in VR research and call it his own, he should have quit id to do it.

I've signed contracts for employers that can technically be interpreted to mean that even my shower-thoughts on the weekend are owned by them, and that is not uncommon. Who knows what Carmack's contract was like. Anyway, it wasn't Carmack who had to pay up; it was Oculus.

Anyway, legal or not, I'm not surprised they went after him, because as much as Carmack feels the knowledge is his, they feel it is theirs. But I agree there is a fuzzy line between general know-how in your field and research specific knowledge, and that's the crux of the matter imo.

I also think Reflex took a lot more from Quake than QC has taken from Reflex in the form of the appearance of this model. I did a google search on Reflex's site and could only find mentions of Quake in the forum.

I don't think there is a problem with copying per se; everyone does it. It is just a bit rich to complain about id copying Reflex though.

QC didn't copy anyting from OW because of the single fact they had a domain name registered before OW came out.

Anyway, the OW copy is total bullshit since they didn't invent anything with OW I guess. Capacities in the game are quite common, like there is this character, Roadhog I think.

Well Roadhog is actually VERY similar to the Biker model of Quake III Arena if you take off his mask, and the guy has a graplin hook capacity which seems to be taken right out of Mortal Kombat's Scorpio technique.

So :

1) Fuck OW and their One Piece like kawai characters.

2) Nobody cares about who copies who, what matters is the final result and gameplay feel (and strafe jumps > everything else forever).

overwatch's aesthetic is 100x better for hooking new players. the "champions" in the game at present do not have much personality and the cosmetics available are all pretty lame/not that different. quake 3's models had much more personality and it was, in part, thanks to the fact that there was a wider color palette used for both the models and the maps. qc's artstyle is basically quake seen through the lens of ut3

OW's aesthetic is appealing to people who wanna play a cartoon game. I like cartoons too sometimes, but not EVERY GAME needs to be that way. It is nauseating.

The colours have ridiculous levels of saturation. It's like playing with Fisher Price toys. It seems everything Blizzard churns out these days has this problem. Diablo 3 was about as dark and atmospheric as a kindergarten.

There is zero maturity to the themes in OW. So yeah, if "new players" are kids, you might be right. QC is going for an adult theme, which is obvious by the blood and the drug references.

Also, "personality" is damn near irrelevant in an AFPS. This is not an RPG. You're not getting to know these characters. There is no story.

It's not even personality; it is just a vibe and annoying voice acting at best. You'll get some backstory about your character and then forget it five minutes later in the heat of the battle, which will not, funnily enough, involve in-character human competition.

That's true, in many ways.

However, playing quake 3 I've always preferred the "DoomGuy" to other models, whilst some others preferred "Xaero" and others. And If doom guy had some sort of voice acting in quake3, where he spits on his victims or kicks them after taking them down - that would've been kind of a fun thing. DooM2016 "Doomslayer" is very iconic for his "always angry" personality thing, people find it funny/fascinating.

These personalities are not important to you and me, but you have to remember, when we were 14-15, we would create our own personalities. Those were clantags + names with colour, some of us would be known as best railers in the clan, some - rocket guys.

That is the difference between NOW and THEN. Now you get into a game, where everything is thought out for you, everywhere a tip/tutorial for everything. Back in the day we had to find it on our own, create our own "portrait" of who we are, instead of choosing from available "portraits" that portray our personality.

Yeah, it is nice for the character you play to have a kind of bad-ass vibe. And there is nothing wrong with YOU expressing yourself through your name, tag, colours, or any other in-game "fashion". But that's really something other than the characters themselves having personality, which is going to be very shallow at best, even in OW.

Yeah, a game nowadays will not be successful unless it does a great deal of hand holding, it seems. Gone are the days when at 10 years old, you had to figure out the right command line arguments for ARJ to decompress your multi-floppy-disk pirated copy of Prince of Persia 2, without google or any online guide or manual.

"personality" is actually very relevant when your game is part of the market segment where a big chunk of success has to do with how many loot boxes you can get people to buy. i want to buy shit to make my guy look cool and that's just not going to happen with this q4-ut3 frankenstein aesthetic

Well I'm actually the exact opposite, there is no way I can find the cartoonish aesthetics of OW interesting but I'd be glad if I can get some stuff for QC characters, funnily enough also because I hate most of them anyway (Ranger, Slash, Nyx, etc.) so I hope I'll be able to modify them to make them bearable skin-wise.

That's why I didn't like champions in the first place and prefer the Q3 system, forcing me to play with models I dislike sucks so that's good if I can make them better looking with helmets, etc..

Frankenstein gore / monstruous aesthetics > cartoon childish characters with candy colors for me.

As to characters personnality, I don't care at all, I'd like to cut the voices as soon as possible anyway.

you do know that something erring on the side of cartoonishness or even just willingness to use a color palette that is not totally washed out doesnt mean said thing will look like overwatch, right? overwatch's environments straddle the line between realism and stylization very well and the dreamworks-looking characters are only one part of its presentation

Obviously, this is going to come down to taste, but OW colours are very intense. I remember twitch commenters remarking on this when the OW beta first came out. It is a characteristic of the game, whereas Tim Willits was talking about a return to Quake's roots with a Lovecraftian, gothic theme, and in fact, I still find the game too colourful. Please, no kindergarten atmospherics for Quake!

Well, you can't make a player look cool in OW either by my aesthetic. :P

But seriously, what you are referring to is just how you dress up. It's not "personality". Yeah, let's let people make their characters look cool. It's gonna be something far more relevant than champion backstory for 99% of the time.

But you were talking about a "wider colour palette", and if that means rainbow colours like OW, then that's a very bad idea for a Quake game imo. They really should keep the saturation levels low most of the time. We need something with a tad more maturity than OW. A lot of us have already cringed hard at Anarki and Slash for the lack of it.

I'm hoping the loot boxes business is a nice sideshow, not the main reason people are playing the game.

OW just stole obvious ideas from MOBAS and bfh.

All those invisibilities, quads, speed and wallhacks and many other has been in existence for a while. HEROES was good at start but then ----> pay2win and insta-die in couple of months. Newcomers played with low-damage slow rifles while donaters played with laser-machinegun dealing over9000dps with 100% accuracy. yeah. EA games - challenge everything MY ASS

I hope in QC will be no lets say dual-shafts for 9.99$ per month.
