No, it means random flashing clusterfucketry obscures everything to oblivion. Which means the visibility in general is beyond dogshit level.

There isn't really much you can do to improve your natural visual acuity. So cluttering up the environment will simply mean that visual acuity is a much bigger factor in determining who aims well and who doesn't. But even the best will still aim worse. The most effective way to deal with clutter will be to adjust your play style, actually avoiding direct confrontation and busy scenes.

It also means that hiding and camouflaging oneself will be more effective strategies, pretty much something that has always been looked down on in Quake because it encourages caution and thus slows down the game. That's what happens when it is so hard to see that you're constantly worried about falling into a pit of punji sticks.

I always liked hiding and not taking the much too serious approach when gaming. When I went from q2 to q3a I couldn't help but notice all the invisible walls cock blocking me from neat spots. I like being a goof so naturally I can't stand not having that freedom.

Hiding is not necessarily a bad mechanic, and sure people do it to goof around when winning is not the most important thing to them (in Quake).

It is just something against what Quake evolved to be. The culture that sprang up around Quake tended to prefer the fast-paced style and the "raw" skill aspect.

But even Quake 2's competitive mod has brightskins.

If you play shooters which try to mimic real life, I can accept that it should be a chaotic detailparade most of the time (though flashing HUD-stuff and such are still annoying, but whatever). Concealing your presence is important and modern warfare makes it hard to spot your enemies. You can't lower the visuals on the battlefield, you have to take it as it is. And that's ok.
However, arena shooters have nothing to do with "simulation" or real life, people tend to play them for their fast gameplay and clear-cut environments - for their pureness, where nothing stands in the way of
unadulterated skill.

In QC, not even picmip is the main issue, but the enemymodel skins blending into the background too much with their crap hitboxes and an ubershitton of effects and flashing lights clusterfucking what little left of the visibility, limiting your in-game awareness AND aim. If you had 20-25 %, or simply mediocre overall acc before anyway, I imagine this is not an issue for you.
On the other hand, it's limiting the framerate as well, which is KEY in ANY online FPS, not just in arena shooters. The game has to render a mountain of literally useless horseshit, which has no redeeming purpose at all, but quite the contrary. It's just there to make teens go wow.

Go back to your BF, if you enjoy visual obscurefest. I play a game for its pure gameplay (which includes visibility), not for the amount of polygons or special effects getting rendered on the screen at the same time. Basically I don't have a single positive care about worthless eyecandy in an online game.





Btw I mostly use relatively low picmip, as the mouse feels more responsive that way.

FX8350 + GTX 770 (+at least 8 GB DDR3 and an SSD) is a decent setup by today's standards. Most games will have really good framerates with med / high settings, 720p.
If not, then the engine itself needs some serious work on it.


The mind-boggling thing is, that DOOM (2016)'s engine scales much better than current QC AND feels more snappy, even though it's primarily a single player game.

GTX770 has one big problem, which is the vram (2gb only).
thats low-end.
todays standards = 4gb and 8gb vram.

his cpu isnt great either, some i5-2500 (which is older) is faster than that AMD cpu.

todays standard for RAM is also 16gb right now. 8gb might be not enough.

I got the 4GB GTX770 and when I built my PC it was mid-high tier.

i dont want to shock you but, 1440p and 1080p are pretty much the current standard.
there are also several well optimized games out there and a GTX770 is due to 2gb vram just low-end.
(mid-range would be ~RX470,RX470 with 8gb or GTX1060 6gb)

1080p is the "standard" as of now, 1440p is still considered an above-standard resolution and slowly gaining popularity (mostly on the casual market). And 4K is pretty much irrelevant for a few more years.


If i can get 100-140 fps in DOOM (2016) with med + high (!) settings + 2 x AA @ 720p with a GTX 750 Ti OC (which I can), that means if a game can't run nicely with a GTX 770 (which is considerably better than a 750 Ti) at 720p @ med + high or 1080p medium, it means the game's optimization is trash and the developers should learn how to code properly (or should stop increasing the CPU / GPU load artificially to make you buy new products).


Btw the real mid-range is more like GTX 960 / GTX 1050 Ti / R9 280 / 380 / etc. - and that RX470, even though that's on the higher end of mid.

I've only ever built amd systems and never had a problem with anything. I lucked out with a sweet cpu. It can do 5ghz with less voltage than stock voltage. I don't have proper cooling though. I can run it at 4.3 though.

YES i like it alot already, though its not 100% perfect yet.
the different champ-types are awesome, exactly what Quake needed after so many years.
ofc balancing will always take some time, but the direction is great.

And, most people tend not to understand the fact a beta - even more so closed one - serves the purpose of providing the general concept and design directions being taken, not representing the whole and finished product in details.

Running it on low at 1080p and I'm getting 144fps with the occasional drops.

On low iq should be fine. The link below showed benchs @ 1080p ultra tho.

i got around 110-130 fps with i5-4570 and gtx770 2gb (made this pc 3 years ago) way more than what i expect (with all settings set LOW 1920x1080)

All I heard was '2GB', '2017', 'Bad performance'.

i never said bad things about cpm

i played reflex for a month or so before coming back to ql; i didn't stop playing reflex because it's a bad game, it's actually the opposite, but i never planned to go "full pro" on reflex, because, let's be honest, altho the game is awesome, if qc and diabotical are successes, then reflex will live in their shadows. Only the die-hard 100% dedicated "cpm" players will keep playing it.
reflex was more a "passage" for me, a game that i can learn a lot of things from and good wait before QC (and also something different than thunderstruck 24/7) and to get used back to cpm-like movements (so that i could play anarki if i were forced to).
let's be honest again, even tho, like i said many times, reflex is a very good and solid game, there's just too few developpers and money involved to make it grow like, let's say, overwatch. World is ruled by money and power, so i think our only hope to see arena shooters rise again is to make some "sacrifices" and go all-in on QC and/or diabotical, our last true hopes. By sacrifices i don't mean playing the games we got in our hearts, but rather follow all the "sheeps" and enjoy whatever we can enjoy from a AAA-game (QC is one of them). I think i left out the idea of keeping playing games with very small communities and uncertain futures only cause they're the most skillful and hardcore games out there. We have to find a right balance between becoming a full fanatic and die with our game like ISIS IRL or be more open-minded, accept changes and whatever an AAA-title brings to us in term of things we like/love and dislike. We have to gauge the good and bad, the pros and cons, and make our choices out of that.
So, like i said, for me the choice is easy : QC and/or DBTL.

about overwatch, i played it prolly for 3 weeks or something, maybe more, before realizing it's just not the kind of game i like. When i started and up to 3 weeks or so i really enjoyed it because it was new and fresh to me, and very popular so i followed the hype. I was basically blind because of the hype and my miss-understood conception of the core gameplay of the game. After realizing that it's just more of a moba than a true hardcore fps like quake or CS:GO, i just went away from this game, and started to hate it cause it stole all our pro quakelive players, it was one of the reason why (not the ONLY reason tho) ql basically died, for real.

about thunderstruck, it's some kind of "passage" for me again. But a very long one. Now i think i have the opportunity to change the way i play and play something else, as long as it's still quake at its core. All those years practicing my combat-skills, finding the right settings etc are not left out, this way i can learn the meta-game of QC without thinking of improving my combat-skills. Things are much easier this way rather than learning both combat-skills and meta-game; rather than starting from scratch.

reflex failed at kickstarter when diabotical reached even more money than expected. Diabotical lead designer is 2GD, well known community commentator/pro in both quake & dota 2. Reflex is from some indie studio based in australia or something, and they are literally like 2 or 3 people developing the game atm :O

well you have to separate game knowledge/brain from aim/dodges/movements. Ofc all of them are masterable but people tend to separate "raw-skills" like aiming for example with "decision making/thinking/strategy" etc. The later is more something you learn with experience and sometimes relatively deep thinking (like "why did i lose this game, what can i improve, what decision i should've done better and so on), when the first is more like practicing your strikes at boxing, it's basically like "aim; die; repeat; aim-harder; die; repeat; aim like a try-hard nerd; kill eventually; repeat" if you see what i mean :P
i'll give other examples :

at duel, if you lost a match, you can win the next one against the same opponent as long as he's about as equally skilled as you by changing your approach of the game, like making other decisions (should i take the jumppad then rl or should i take the stairs and YA, should i go for the rail and rely on my aim or even should i position myself so that i can escape/make damages more easily even with average aim, all these kind of decisions), you can even watch the demo/replay of your lost match and analyze it, so that you don't make the same mistakes over and over again. Remember ESL extreme masters with rapha commentating his own game against cooller on dm6 with carmac as a guest ? You can clearly see that rapha doesn't rely on his combat-skills (aim/dodges/movements) at 100% and can explain every moves he made, that made him win the game. It's far from being only about trying to aim better, try-harding until this rail shot hits or this lg-accuracy is reached, until he wins a fair lg vs lg or hits all his rails ala k1llsen.

now about CA 2v2/1v1, when i started to play it back in 2003-2004 nearly every decent/good players could out-shaft me. So what i wanted to achieve is to beat them at lg vs lg eventually. To go through this process you have to do something really simple yet very "exhausting" both for the mind and the hand(s) : practice lg vs lg vs the same opponent until you finally start to win some games and then win more than he does against you, so, like i said, it's basically like : "aim-harder; die; repeat; aim-even-harder; die; repeat; try-hard even more; eventually get a kill; repeat; keep yourself 100% focused and warmed up, aim-hard; kill; repeat; kill; repeat; after prolly 3H of prac, take a rest" and continue your same practice method the next day and then over and over again everyday for 1 month until you finally beat him/them consistantly at lg vs lg. It's not deep think or strategy of any kind, like i said, it's just like practicing to strike harder at boxing, very different approach than analyzing a game(type) that allows strategy and "multitasking" like positioning, decision making, timings, out-smarting your opponent by taking better escape or/and chasing routes etc...

because of the items and much larger maps, duel is far from being only about combat-skills alone, ofc having better combat-skills gives you an edge over your opponent, but if you don't spend a minimum amount of time thinking about your tactic and strategy(even before the match starts), then there's a high chance that you won't beat a very experienced player at duel, even if he got worst combat-skills than you.

So really we shouldn't be following "sheeps" but rather just playing what is a good game (assuming it is possible to enjoy it due to it having enough players). This is really simple to me. I won't play a bad game even if it has a billion followers. Besides, if you're just a pleb in a sea of plebs, and every match is played with a random collection of said plebs, no one will even care if you're gone. When you, Heartless, post on this site, people actually recognize you. Not so in a huge community.

You can separate different skills used in the game if you want, but please don't tell me anything involving higher brain function is not a skill. Not only reptiles have skills. :D

Rapha doesn't rely on combat skills, not because his skills are bad but because at the top, the differences in combat skill proficiency are not great enough that you can easily rely on them solely to win.

Anyway, you just hone different skills in different ways. The only real difference with things like aim is there is no CHOICE in what you are doing. All of the "decisions" being made are done by a subconscious part of your brain. The more you are making choices about how to improve your chances or percentages, the more you are using higher brain function and therefore are no longer in the realm of what you call "raw skills".

That's not really the point I was making though. My point was that ALL of those skills are part of the GAME. They are not "metagame".

Metagame is the game outside of the game that nonetheless influences the outcome of the game. Strategy and tactics are not metagame. Spiking your opponent's drink, sleeping with his girlfriend, psychological warfare before the match, studying demos of him playing to learn his patterns, these are metagame.

People are going to draw the boundaries of "the game" in difference places, but really if it occurs during the course of the match and is not using some obscure knowledge of the internal operation of the game that hardly anyone else exploits, then it is not metagame. Item timing would have been metagaming in the beginning, but it is certainly not now. I even think things like champion selection are not metagaming because by that stage, the match has already really started, and it is something everyone does; it is an integral part of the game proper.

yeah well, you're right, diabotical isn't AAA but very close to it and still has much more chance to be a big e-sport game than reflex, let's be realistic. And like i said the fact that they're prolly like 10 devs (or close to it) working on the game, with 2GD as lead designer, means that it has much more chance than reflex to "hit the masses", to become big.

also for example dota or even CS, both were "mods" of respectively warcraft 3 and half-life, look at where they are nowadays. Diabotical is based heavily on quake, but with new concepts, which means that it can just have a bright future like dota or cs.
If reflex kickstarter didn't fail, and if there were more devs within the dev team, it would've had a massive popularity boost, i'm pretty sure of it; but still not sure for how long, cause reflex is definitely the most hardcore afps all them all, by far, including diabotical and qc. And we all know that a too "extreme" gameplay can scare the "noobs" (look at starcraft for example, it's still a popular game but lives in the shadows of LoL and DotA, at least for the time being).
QC is far less "hardcore" than reflex, and so will be diabotical.

for all those reasons i mentioned (and i didn't even mention them all), i think diabotical has a pretty high chance of becoming huge.

He doesn't rely on his combat-skills cause he's no tox or evil, he can't win by using them alone. His strenght ain't combat-skills, but rather analyzing his opponent(s), positionning, perfect items timings etc.

whereas for example evil or tox usually make timings mistakes from time to time, don't get the BEST positions all the times etc, but yet can still play at the top because their combat-skills alone kind of balance the thing out.

I don't really have a prediction for the future of Diabotical. I hope it does well. :D
I'll probably buy it even if I don't play it much, like I did with Reflex. If it is only $10, why not? It provides some support to the AFPS genre.

I reckon it will be very hard for Diabotical to pull it off though. The main differences between AAA and indie are resources, marketing power in particular, and a brand. In those areas, I think Diabotical has it better than Reflex, but only slightly.

I probably would play a game with 17 players if I could get the team games I like going and if I actually liked those 17 players. :D

Rapha's combat skills are still far above average. That's why he is still capable of doing high damage in TDM. You cannot be a top dueler without that, no matter how much brain you have.

look at agent, this dude prolly got the worst combat-skills amongst all the pros at top level, but yet he can still take from time to time 1st place from evil @ 125fps cup. I agree that it's not LAN and far from as prestigious as QuakeCon for example, but still, evil is pretty much in his "comfort zone" @ 125fps, so beating him is still very impressive.

that said, i still agree with you that at very top lvl you still need far above average combat-skills, but i think that we agree there that it's not only about that. :)

its only the graphics card, the fx 8350 gives the same benchmark scores in most games as the ryzen 1800+

the ryzen will destory the fx 8350 in games with sli or crossfire, or in doom 4 with the custom texture pagefile, and more 3x bandwidth of ddr4 taking 80 uncompressed textures out of physical RAM at the same time for each new render frame

Many mini features need to be added, many gameplay fixes. But graphically QC is perfect, SyncError (?) made a perfect TMD map, textures, models, anims,style,sound.

I played about 3-4 hours by now with Ranger/Anarki/Nyx, I really like the game. It was really good feeling the adrenaline pumping through my veins again, quake is like a drug. Its so competetive in a good way :-), and you can still pull manage to pull of skillful stunts within the game. The champions dont have a negative impact on the gameplay so far imho, they are a good change to the game so far :-). I also like the graphical customization of the characters like putting wings on nyx, etc. :-)
btw, I have 4,5 year old i5 pc and an 1 year old GTX 960, it runs rather smooth on 1280 x something, but in the last game I had a slight lagging fps wise that impacted my game, I hope they still optimize the game, otherwise I prolly need a new comp ... but in most other games it was quite fluent, but I didnt look at the fps, could be it was only 30 fps or something :-)

it feels like im playing with ~30-40fps especially when in combat + mouse feels weird. (lg fights are disgusting)
but fraps says i average 150+ fps, tried different gfx settings... everything on low is unplayable.

game is done like 20%, there are first beta tests + game itself is not optimized yet if you didnt noticed. Go play quake live instead and wait for release

PS: With that kind of computer on all low you can get 250 fps so its not problem with QC

second rig 2500k@5 with gtx1070 = 200fps
