Nah, they are just trying to get the modern 2017 gamer, which means doing the things that achieves that goal. Some of these things will invariably turn away the old playerbase (in id's eyes, only a small part of the gaming demographic actually wants to play what we think quake is), but that is considered collateral damage at most. At the end of the day, the number of people who actually know what the distinguishing properties of quake and quake-likes have been during the last decades is only like 10'000 (and the number of those who actually care is probably <1000). As a AAA publisher, you cannot produce a game that hundreds of thousands and millions of people do not want to play because you catered to a handful of veterans which compromise maybe one percent of your potential audience. That is not the way AAA game development and publishing works.

You see I agree with that and I genuinely have no problem with having this rock paper scissors thing for team modes as I also agree with people who say duel was the pitfall of quake. However all that was necessary was to leave duel like CPM - all the passive abilities for every champion with none of the active ones. Then I think everyone would be happy, I mean I bet even the die hard vq3 fans would openly welcome this mode as opposed to what it is now. Cause you can't push duel onto casual players, it's for egomaniacs. You can't get carried, you can't blame team mates, you can't really make friends, so I don't get why they bother to cater it to the casuals too, I don't see them picking it up no matter how dumbed down it is.

I seriously doubt that, dev costs are not cheap and 2000 is not even a million dollars.

Pretty sure they'll do ok form it though, you also have to consider the game is possibly a test model for Bethesda making multiple games of this sort but with characters from their existing IP.

Once they get this model fully working, they could bang out a shitload of conversions for film license like star wars, or even street fighter etc in under 12 months per game.

There's always room for an FPS game of anything and fans will buy it with the Overwatch/Champions formula.

The Graphics engine looks pretty good too, this is capable of doing nice looking modern games, IDTECH 3/Quakelive was polished, but the engine was still stuck 10 years in the past. Though I'm sure they used loads of the back end stuff, and experience.

I think they'll do well from this experience and with the 500 million they just won off facebook/carmack I think Bethesda will probably have no problem keeping idsoftware in business.

my point was that around 2000 people (last time i checked, not sure anymore. that could be a really generous number) are playing quake live, and that if more than 2000 people pay for the game, then that's more than the 2000 "quakers" who "don't like it" and "didn't pay for it".

me and a friend of mine really like it and we always were hardcore quakers. It is fresh and fun and even though we are serious about our quake stuff, we have no plans of becoming pro or something and QC seems like a lot of fun (even more fun than latest doom). Having said that, it certainly needs much improvements, but it's already much fun to play.

The only things that worry me are:

a) that duel might not be as much fun to spec with the new mode. No more crazy rapes, comebacks, spawn frags, crazy displays of skill. It is fun to play though (at least when u win, because didn't encounter serious competition).

b) with only 6 frags on the line, duel will be even more defensive than it was in ql, which was already A LOT and much more than q3. They must find counter measures if the keep that 3champion duel. Otherwise most serious duels will be going to sudden death most of the times, with 0-0 scores and who knows after how many minutes someone will break and overextend and lose or be lucky enough to make the frag. Also, luck will be a bigger factor, which indeed is anti-quake like, but personally don't care, since my life won't be on the line. They could maybe buff attacking weapons, or nerf defensive weapons, or find something else, so that players won't +back for eternity.

They already implemented counter-measures to speed up the action. It is called higher weapons damage that some complain about.

The higher weapon damage is really only the zoomed rail, which is an obscenity. Weaker characters, the impossibility of 200/200, and no tiered armour, but increasing rail from 80 to 100 is highly stupid. With a frag limit of three (what a joke), you just need to land two rails on a spawner and you're already two frags up.

If they wanna keep the round based format, they need to use a time limit, not a frag limit. And there is no justification at all for the easiest weapon to hit in the game to do as much damage as a direct rocket, which is something of a rarity.

So yeah, let's make QC like QL where I have to land 6 rails in a row on ztn to kill you!!!! And the more rails it needs for a player to kill his enemy, the more better aimer (aka veteran quake players) come on top. That's why in CS beginners keep playing: because high damage weapons permit them to kill even pros from time to time (random aim vs consistent aim). In QC if you reduce RG damage newer players would get crushed not being able to kill veterans even once, looking like they would fight immortal enemies. Great philosophy you all got there boys, look how many play QL now!!

RG damage is not "obscenity". FFA and tdm matches show that most of the time RL brings the victory -despite the fact that some complain about rockets' somehow slow speed. In duel you can compensate this even more, because there is more armor and health to rapidly replenish your stack. On top of that you have the option to save your arse using the abilities. Reducing RG damage would make matches slow as fuck. Makes me recall the "great" advices of the QL community to tone down the shotgun* immensely, now the SG in QL is nothing but a joke, having to shoot point blank to do any damage or you can use it with somehow success if you already hit 5 rails in a row so enemy's health is around 20.

*shotgun was maybe a bit stronger but nowhere did that weapon deserved the disgraceful massive tone down that it got in the end

100 rail with current balance is pretty obscene to me. It's the easiest gun in the game.

RL is the most useless weapon in this game. I can do better roaming around with zoomed HMG.

The speed of the rockets isn't an issue. It's the firing delay.

I don't agree with all Quake related nerfs ever, but RG 80 seems quite balanced to me.

If you have to hit 5 rails in a row, it means your opponent has 400 health (not actually possible in QC). That means you let him get that health. If you failed so bad, why should a couple of rails get you out of it?

To have 100 rail, you either need a longer reload time or to buff other weapons.

Please keep in mind that if you have to hit your opponent 5 times in a row this is of course oriented toward duel (my observation). In duel your opponent would +back a lot and pick up shards and whatever else very fast. Happened a lot to me in QL duel to have the opponent in duel screaming to death for damn 5 minutes and not dying despite many rails bc QL is (too) heavily oriented towards the importance of items.

Then again increasing the RG delay (longer reload time), seems a good option to me.
And just to better understand me why I want to keep 100 RG damage: I use RG zoom about 20% of the time in ffa (what I mostly play in QC now). So you see, it is not about me being afraid to lose some advantage.

Whether you like an item centric duel or an aimfest really is just a matter of taste in the end. I'm actually happy Rapha is at the top rather than some aimwhore.

There is hardly ever a reason not to zoom RG in QC, and all those squishy champs die fast to it.

Just watched ZeRo4 vs Lakerman ob Babbages CPL last day. According to your theory they were both "aimwhores' bringing boring games to the table. Yes or no? Playing a heavily rail map with 100 rail damage plus rocket damage through floor plus strong shotgun.

Those two playing would have been exciting with or without your 100 damage rail.

But yeah, for every exciting game like that, there's heaps of boring ones.

And thanks for bringing up the other differences besides rail. They are what make the 100 rail more acceptable. You also had a 160DPS LG back then too.

QL is a very rail heavy game, and that's with only 80 damage. Rail heavy games are not my idea of fun nor are they particularly interesting to watch, so I have no interest in making it even more rail heavy.

100dmg railgun is THE reason why current "duel" is FULL +back fest 24/7.

I can't use the rl well in QC myself, but I don't assume that is weak, because it's almost the only weapon that frags me. Therefore, my opponents use it very well and the problem is with me. More than 90% of my deaths are from a rocket, few are by rg and close to none by other weapons (including the mighty lg). I guess that developers can see the real stats, see which weapon is used the most, which weapons make the most damage and which the most frags. If they track these stats, no matter the whine, the rl must be more nerfed. Not to mention the sickening +back that a really strong rl will bring to duel, especially with the format that has now. It will be disgusting. It will be no more who has the best aim, dodge, movement, strategy, map control, but who has the more patience. Will be a contest of patience.

The SG has been buffed in QC. It now does up to 120 damage. No other weapon can do that much one shot damage, and it kills me a lot, especially if not using one of the tiny champs.

The lag on the RL, along with all the other netcode problems, is inexcusable, and we can't talk properly about balance until these things are fixed.

I also think rail does a lot more to make duel gay than RL since it stifles free flowing movement. Just my opinion though.

I have a friend that complains for rl too, but he was a +back champion in ql. His opponents were jumping from joy, just for seeing him for a second in ztn. Of course, they were too exited to remember to dodge or not to recklessly hunt him.

I actually don't see anyone complaining about the RL being OP in QC.

It is the least effective RL out of any Quake game, which is bad given that RL is supposed to be the iconic Quake gun. Hitscan dominates this game.

I think RL in duel is primarily a problem for people who like to chase.

Just checked my stats in QC. I have 3x as many kills with LG than RL. I can't tell what I'm getting killed by the most, but I really don't think it is RL.

It's not even remotely fresh at all. Take away idiotic champions and their abilities and you're left nothing that separates it from past Quake games. Quake Champions is abilitybased, it is more teambased, items are less important.

Abilities will bring so much fun and new in CTF : Anarki or Slash flagruns, invisible walk to flagroom by Nyx, use Visor vision in crosscap etc.

Game is not finished. A lot of bugs design and art mistakes imbas is not a surprise. I am still waiting to decide it is good game or not)

It is new game with old quake heroes ( like Zero4 :D ).
