My fav version of q2dm1 is the q3 remake for FFA it works great mostly because SPAM SERVERS can play it without too much spam since its a big map

I think the beauty of q2dm1, in duel, was that it was more about space control rather than item control.

It was a very unbalanced map, mainly because of the poor distribution of items. That's why mastering advantageous areas was the key to good dueling performance on q2dm1.

That's one way to look at it but at the end of the day it lead to interesting matches. A completely balanced map would be boring. When game design tries to make everything a 50/50 chance it gets real boring.

I understood what you mean, and I even agree. Maps that give good advantage to those in control are more challenging to the skills and strategies of the players on the field.

But maps that give an exaggerated advantage to those who are in control, like q2dm1, although it is still exciting for those who watch, it is very unpleasant for those who are playing and mainly for beginners(newbies). Even the old dm6 of QL is more balanced than The Edge of q2.

t4 would be a really interesting map for duels in QC.

Have to be careful with old maps, even though the new DM6 is different, they have to be similar in layout to the old maps to be worth doing.

That in itself means old players have a huge advantage.
From the public videos I have seen of the new maps like Burial Chamber and the Amazonian level they look very positive.

Indeed, it has gotten slight graphics upgrades with each iteration here and there and some minor changes as well. Yes it is essentially a remake 3.0.
In these kinds of games the first things to change should be maps, at least try to put a challenge in somewhere - people being forced to learn new maps.

There is also a big difference between a re-make and a remastering. A remake at least takes some sort of effort, creative meeting for a few hours, but a remastering literally means that some people do not have to work for another 5-10 years.

you can't compare quake with sc when it comes to the maps and the way the game is played.

also making 5-10 new maps every couple of months seems totally unrealistic especially in quake champions where obviously they want to make VERY high quality maps both in term of visuals and gameplay.

Aerowalk and ZTNDM3 in Q3 were remakes of the q1 maps and The Edge in Q4/QL were remakes of the Q2 map, all faithful to the original.
But Blood Covenant is basically a mod of Q3DM6.

I know for a fact The Edge wasn't 100% faithful, there were new areas/portals added. Some items where placed differently as well.

Also the movement in each of those games were different so adjustments had to be made.

Same thing here. Campgrounds is adjusted in Quake Champions in order to better adapt to the new gameplay/items/mechanics/graphics. This is why I say it's technically impossible to keep them the same.

Just revisited Quake Live and the Edge is very much the same as the original in architecture, it only differs very little in item placement (ra is added as item) .... Quake 4 was remixed a bit, they replaced the waterarea for the railgun by a jumppad to a railgun area, and the elevater was replaced by a jumppad ... in terms of architecture aerowalk and ztndm3 are also very much the same ...
if id is able to make good maps out ouf the box (unlike Q3A) we dont need these originals maps remade ...

there is no real logic argument pro classic contra classic, it comes down how it is done and if the map is adaptable to the new game ... you could still build cars with the exterior chassis from the 80s if you wanted to as well ... but most people want something else, but there is still minority of maximum 5 % of people who want to have a car with a 80s chassis just like you, sadly market doesnt care, because the companies would basically self-destruct ... we could continue this discussion on taste, but I honestly dont see sense in that ...

Technically impossible, huh? Just copy the geometry and u have an exact copy of the map, there are even map converters out there ...
except if you take a look at the item placement ... when I think of maps in quake, the item placement is of course the ultimate differentiator and if one item happens to be added/deplaced, the common opinion among humans is that this equals the creation of a completely new map, adding one item is basically the same as changing the architecture of the map of q2dm1 into ztndm3 and so a slightly different item placement must transform the map a completely new entity of its own ...

None of the remixed maps have ever been the same, not even architecturally. I've tried direct ports and they always have to rebuild them to adjust for different movement etc. Direct copies have never worked from game to game. (Quake here folks, not cs) Go look at blood run or aerowalk in quake 1 and tell me again that any of them are the same in ANY version of quake

I agree, but competitions do not have to necessarily chose old maps. On the other hand I think I would enjoy ztn or dm6 (my new choices to replace t4) in QC in public matches or against the computer.

(I don't mitigate 100% here for point by point map copies, I think I would like more modified remakes like the new dm6)

You know what maps I think got a lack of love over the past decade? The Quake 2 ZTN maps. ztn2dm2 and ztn2dm3 were so good.

I recall he made a few for quake 1 as well aside from the blood run that everyone knows and loves. His mapping skills were awesome, I wonder what ever happened to him. i.e. what he does for work.

The meta of Overkill is kinda funny. 70% of the map isn't really used. Would be interesting to see it remade to cut out some of the unnecessary space... or connect that space in a more interesting way.

New maps or old just do not the uber realistic atmosphere I have seen in one of the QC maps (Ruins of Sarnath), I mean with the white outside illumination. Better use dark environments or Mars-inspired with red ambient light. Outside parts of the map look crappy like some Gears of War replica.
