A caster can be an expert of the game, but if all he can do is scream things like WHOA ANOTHA RAIL!! and i have to mute the stream he's worse than a quiet caster with less experience.

Ddk, sure. Zoot, not at all. I'm sure he understand Quake mechanincs at a very deep level, but his commentary isn't any deeper than those of that two new casters.
On top of that, he tries too hard to hype up the games, by screaming at the top of his lungs always the same 3-4- sentences. "Anotha rail" "Whoohoo!" and "Omg the damage is INSANE" is about 90% of what he ever says.

He's just obnoxiously loud. I'm sure there are guys that enjoy that style, i just can't stand it too long. It sounds incredibly amateurish and out of place. But that's just my opinion and you're free to like whatever you like.

There're 4 open qualifiers (8 players from each qualify) for the main qualifier cup taking place on 5th of August
Top 12 of the 32 players there are going to get a slot and a paid trip to quakecon.
Same for NA region. Also there're 8 duel slots being given at BYOC tourney before qcon, so it's 12 EU + 12 NA + 8 BYOC slots.

What I don't get is that the top32 in duel will play online but the top8 of sacrifice will play at leicester on lan. So the people that qualify for both will have to play from there while the others can play from home ? :b

Considering Stermy has been retired for years and has little to no practice in this game, he did impressively good.

The same can be said for Avek.
It's incredible how much they could bother active good players. They really surprised. Makes to think that with a bit of practice they can absolutely become contenders again.

Besides that, and apart of tox, he surely have been playing like a madman with l1nkin, winz (and probably the whole noctis crew, ocasionally) in teamodes preparing for this event, wich is safe to say that such group is the top notch of competitive play in Europe.

That's why I just enjoyed this match so much (the best of the tournament for me), not only because of Tox statement, but because this game is been said to be designed mostly for heavy aim (rail) players such as Stermy, that, combined with the "new meta" of the game gave just too much of and advantage to not-so-well-prepared players over the very top active quakers (like Cypher), and seeing Cypher counterplaying and rebutting that was just beautiful (with great aim himself, let's put that clearly of course). You just had to see how Cypher totally overplayed him on Blood run with his big tournament experience in that map (a hard one to take advantage of, IMO, given that Stermy is an old school player himself and also played ztn a thousand times), he was really unstoppable and with visor WH to give him the enemy location Stermy just had no chance.

However, is clearly that Stermy is a very good (top already?) player in this game, he got kicked out in this one but sure he'll be back for the next qualifoer, and with this top 8 players out of the way already he most likely will get a place for quakecon no doubt.


As for the retired thing tho I think that goes more for people like Makaveli or even ClampOK, but I'm not sure if that's a valid argument for Stermy. He just stopped playing QL duel because he was no longer a match for the top contenders, but he was still active in competitive gaming with little shows here and there, and of course, now that there is a "new meta" for this game and there's a shitload of money in the line for a tournament this big he's back to as active as before.

In the other hand, I agree with you regarding Av3k, wich explains his perfomance against noctis as he got totally crushed by him (a well prepared and trained player against a rusty one), but he did good enough, and enjoyed watching him playing. However, i still wonder why is he even playing given all the stuff he has been involved in the recent time. Is really obvious at this point that he's gonna get visa rejected by the US, which makes it impossible for him to go to Qcon and he participating in this qualifiers totally pointless.

Okay repeatedly mispronouncing av3k just really triggers me, had to mute. These casters really don't know quake, they're just promoting the abilities the passives talking basics. Which is okay in some sense, lots of newbies tuning in, but they unfortunately make it obvious they don't understand that much past that. Or perhaps too busy in their casting mode, I don't know. Either way, I hope id find ways to promote people who stuck with Quake forever, we'll all be better for it. Let these guys develop on smaller stages.

I think they did a quite good job. Yes, they are not long time quake fans, and it shows in various ways, but to give them credit, they did try to prepare properly to this, and were knowledgeable way more than a lot of externals. They got excited when the time was right, and I got a sense they will really enjoy the game by the end of this. Plus, they seem comfortable enough talking over spinning logos, which is something we might need.

I don't really disagree with any of the specifics you mentioned; they did do a good job considering, and clearly prepared tons. It's just not that natural, they focus on the game mechanics (especially new ones) a lot rather than the players or the game being played, it's a bit of a promo and monotone (no break) compared to a usual Quake cast. A lot of the fun details of duel strategy are just completely missed because they either don't know them, don't have the capacity to notice them while casting or are simply too busy on game mechanics.

So what I'm saying is, I'd just heavily prefer casters who see those really beautiful deeper aspects of Quake and don't overload the cast with the kind of stuff they say. I kind of hope most of the non-complete newbies would like be able to appreciate those aspects too - I know I tend to notice whether they're being covered even in games newer for me.

With that said, I've been sick of catchphrases and overly professional casts since I listened to a few too many of them during sc2 heyday and the beginnings of twitch, so perhaps I'm more weary than most. Like I prefer professional gamers chilling and calmly discussing a game to a cast, that much definitely isn't the case for most people. And I'm sure id are happy with the promotion for the game the dressing casters are doing. And they'll develop I'm sure, I encourage them to do so, they have a lot to work with.

My main comment to them is to drop the 'life changing money' line. Nobody will make 1M$, and i think it should be possible to promote the very nice prize pool and ESL without being intellectually dishonest.

As for them discussing champions, I'm afraid it's by design. It does not matter if they are or not he real reason matches go a certain way. Champions are there to fill exactly this commentator gap, allowing them to propose a narrative to explain what otherwise would require true wisdom.

I would give them time and be positive.

they're never shuting the fuck up, I'm affraid this doesn't change with increasing knowledge. To me the best momemnt of whole yesterday's cast was when they finally were quiet for 1.5 seconds. I think that's a bullshit type of casting, filling every second with (often pointless and totally unnecessairy) "background noise".

Tbh Joe has a good voice and a good pair for 2GD, but his casting insight is not much deeper (at least in Quake, don't know about other games) than these two newbies'.

Vo0 beat Fazz i dont think Zoot has any chance. The speed he displayed was awesome. CPM players has much more chance to place good in QC than it was in QL.

from the duels I watched, was impressed with cypher, even though he is cypher and with luminus for whom I don't know nothing about. Any background on luminus? he was playing really nice, especially with sorlag, very enjoyable to watch.

anarki's game was a bit disturbing and boring to me, especially when he was playing vs another anarki or when watching noctis escape death, time after time.

This is all very nice, and I'm happy to see that many old and new names going at it. But am I the only one who finds it hard to actually enjoy watching the games? The crappy visiblity makes me nauseous and the new duel mode just doesn't offer the unique excitement that duels in previous quakes or even something like painkiller could generate. Really can't see myself watching this for more than a couple of minutes :-/ Would be interesting to hear a newcomer's take on this, maybe I'm just stuck in my ways?

Yea, the gameplay is too shattered by the round system and its over before the match gets any flow. But at the same time it drags on forever with the bo3 of bo5. Said it a couple of times, removing the rounds and having 5 champs per map would improve things a lot.

Agree with the visibility too. The contrast of some hud elements, items and lightning on some of the maps vs the visibility of enemies is atrocious.

The time limit is FUCKING terrible. Encourages running and hiding. And so many games just... end, with no climax

I actually like the comentators. Good synergy and they just have started. Good balance between emotions and whats happening, they obv prepared about quake and took history checkups + they show knowledge for a few tricky and less known things in qc. Obviously played the game and also good explanation/commentating for beginers. Lot of potential in them and if they keep developing, I can esily see them commentating even @qc main event.

these guys are stapple commentators from Mortal Kombat/fighting game tournaments, they certainly have what it takes.
