To me it kind of makes sense that women who put their careers ahead of having kids might end up unhappy.
Having kids is like the most natural human instinct, and it makes sense to have kids when you are in your most fertile age.
A career is something unnatural, something constructed, it is just the modern way of getting resources to you and your family.
A woman's work place title and status don't mean anything, no one cares if a woman is a good provider. A man who is a good provider (=rich) will have women throwing themselves at his feet.

Pursuing a career is much more benefiting to a man than a woman.
Still it is projected by society as the natural path through life for both men and women.

My specualations on this vary. There are a lot of reasons why people, and especially women have it worse or are unhappier than in previous generations (albeit the situations of people have never been better). Patriarchic society still going strong, capitalism in its ending phase, structural sexism and so on and so on. The reason suiting my quote would be that, although women have com a long way from being owned by their husbands, their situation is still pretty dire on a grander scale.
But to be honest, I wouldn't want to discuss this here, because the average education level of the manly man (read: boys) on here is a degree in Wikipedia and 4chan and I don't want to engage in something like this anymore really.

Do I agree on your last question? Yes and no. For instance, I've never had that feeling. It's not something that naturally occurs in my mind.
Of course I know that there are people who's feelings towards this are VERY strong, but I think we as a people are moving beyond it being just a natural, instinctual thing.

The actual urge to have children might not be a very strong instinct in many humans (especially in men) because it doesn't need to be, sex is. Before the invention of birth control and abortions, sex led to children and the urge to have sex is strong in almost everyone.

But one such biological, primal urge for women, one thing that maybe ultimately makes women happy, even if they are unaware of it, might just be to have children. And since they are urged by society to make a career before they have a family if they even ever have a family, we might end up with a larger part of the female population that feels their lives are unfulfilled.

And about humans moving beyond our natural instincts and urges. We are more of less the same as we were 200 000 years ago:

Meanwhile, men are afraid of the whole deal due to the potential of getting royally financially screwed in the event of divorce, and birth rates are dwindling to the point of aging society problems, creating the need to import replacements from other countries.

It doesn't surprise me people aren't happy.
