personally I don't feel the game in its current state has any longevity.

It depends on what longevity we're talking. It's currently more active than all the other quake games combined in terms of number of players, viewers, and pro players involved, and the game is still in Beta.

I give it at least a couple of solid years before it completely dies, and that's my worst prediction.

They need to do a lot more marketing though as I know a lot of non pure quake players who haven't heard about it and are actually interested in playing it when being a shown a video.

A lot of my steam and discord conversations with players I know from other games that I've played (MohAA, ET, Dirty Bomb, CS:GO, etc). go like this:

me: "QC"
them: "what's that?"
me: "the new quake game, here's a youtube video of what it's like, it's free to play"

many people will try it for sure, it's just whether they get bored of it or not.

the only two games that I've personally been gripped by online are cs (6 years played then quit) and quakelive (5? years played, still playing) but I've played many others briefly.

I've only ever been hooked on a few games: MoHAA, Q4 and QL i would say are the only ones I've been hooked on for several years.

So far I can see myself playing QC sacrifice casually for several years too, considering I'm having fun with the people I'm playing with.

Among a few other players I play sacrifice with 2 players from Sweden who've been playing quake since the first ever quake, quake3 being their all time favourite. One of them is 45 and the other 52.

They still enjoy QC and play really decent.

QuakeCon 2017 should've been one last Quake Live Duel Masters for the diehards with something new like Doom v6.66 on the side. Keep Quake Champions under wraps until later in the year when it's more polished than it is now, then announce the World Championships for 2018.

They've kinda shot themselves in the foot doing things the way they have, casual gamers won't care too much about this years comp.

Showing new gamers that there is already a pro scene in QC is a good incentive too, rather than a game that no one knows if it will ever be played at pro level.

I consider it a rather smart decision actually.

Also, when a new gamer is looking into this game he can actually come across footage of pro players playing it, rather than some shitty trailers showing frags from lesser skilled players.
