Honestly for all the worries, it's going to steam, it's free to play + bought version (ideal model for competitive game), and most importantly THE GAME ISN'T GOING RETAIL SOON. That would have been death for sure, now it seems the development will continue which was always my #1 worry.

Free to play has never been a guarantee of a game staying alive, nor a paid game has ever been a guarantee to be a dead game.

Being free to play brings more players in, especially for games like QC. I don't mean to be disrespectful but most Quake players are indeed located in poor Eastern European countries with little access to online payment, and in those a $10 difference makes or breaks a game.

QC desperately needs players. Right now it takes an absurd amount of time to find a match of anything other than duel, everywhere in the world. I for one have not forgotten how tox one time streamed getting a 60 mins long queue in EU servers, because I have got one like that myself in NA servers.

Nowadays it doesn't take as long, but new players aren't forgiving with these things. They are going to see a 10 mins long queue and leave for good, because they could be playing PUBG in less than one second of queueing, or OW in 10 seconds.

I've played games that were great and free to play like Dirty Bomb and they still died because they had no proper attention.

Some players also consider games that are free to play not be as good as games that you pay for, as in their minds when you pay for something it means it's quality while if it's free it's most likely because the developers are desperate to get players. It's silly but that's how a lot of people think.

I'm sorry but if you can afford a computer that can support QC + a decent gaming mouse, mousepad and headset, I'm sure you can afford a game that's less than $30 / 25€. That's a normal price for a modern game coming out.

I find Sacrifice games within 5 minutes being solo, duo queue or a full team of 4 here in Europe and the game is still in beta.

5 minutes is already absurdly long. In the games people actually play (so not Quake) it ranges from 0 to at most 30 seconds. 5 minutes = Steam refund, because the game appears to be dead or not working.

Most people there don't have access to online payment. The game could be $1 and it would still be a major barrier of entry for the majority of Quake players in the world.

And well we are discussing the minimum payment. The $40 retail price means QC directly competes with OW. OW is leagues above QC, in terms of ...everything really, so getting OW is money way better spent.

Now that we'll be able to see how the game is doing, via Steamcharts, I think you are going to get very surprised at QC's lack of activity. I expect that by month 3 (November) QC won't even manage to break the top100, meaning practically dead -- as it would be right now if it wasn't for the 1m tournament ending next week. Dirty Bomb is at 96th place with 3,000 players and it is dead (QL has 581).

5 minutes for a team party game in a non released beta game is not absurdly long and will most likely be reduced after the steam release as you'll have all the current players using the launcher + those coming from steam.

Most people don't have access to online payment? How do people buy most steam games? They don't go to the supermarket to buy a game, most steam users buy their game online using online payments. The majority of players who buy their games in store are the under 18's who ask mummy to buy them a game when food shopping with her - not exactly the audience for a gore game with blood splashes and characters doing the middle finger while strafing around the map.

You talking about buying a game being a major blocker, come on man. How are the developers making money? Are you hoping for another Quakelive with an understaffed team of developers who release updates only every now and then and barely fix what players are asking for? I've seen this happen with both Quakelive and Dirty Bomb and I really don't think free to play games are a sustainable business model for the long term unless you have an ultra popular franchise like Valve.

QC isn't $40, it's $29 and that's only for the early release, it will be free to play quite soon. Let's not compare it with a $40 OW that even though is $40 has 30 million players who bought the game.

There's a reason why games like Dirty Bomb and Quakelive are dead, they're free to play and not by a massively followed franchise like Valve or Blizzard. It means the team of developers is under staffed and listening to the community to release updates takes forever. So far in QC they've been pretty quick at fixing issues and requests from the community in only a few months time. Look at what it is right now compared to the first early beta which was absolutely terrible and even put me off. Now the game is actually getting somewhere and we're only 4 months in since the first closed beta launnch.

I guess time will tell and we can have this discussion again in 6 months time.

That works for them because the game's popularity immediately exploded, as it is based on H1Z1's most popular gametype. PUBG could cost $70 and it would still sell millions of copies.

Instead, the Quake community (we) consists of at the very most 1,000 people in the world. In 2017 the Quake brand is nothing next to the H1Z1 brand. Pricing shouldn't take us into account because we are just too few, but aim to lure the casuals in, and they flock to f2p games.

Just like I told the other guy, lets wait and see the numbers for ourselves. Only 5 days until you can see QC on Steamcharts, and 10 to see QC's 1m tournament viewership on Twitch. Just remember that for comparison's sake Dirty Bomb has 3,000 players and it's dead, and less than 30,000 viewers would be less than what DrDisrespect gets every day and without paying 1m as prize pool (+ much more in production, flying in players and booking their hotels, etc.)

The difference in viewers and players is how much the players like the game, much less so of what the cost is until it's free to play and it can become one later whenever it's appropriate. They can't go from free to play to early access, but vice versa works.

People don't give two chances to games. They are not going to spontaneously Google about QC in a year to see the game is now f2p. Mess up the launch event and chances are a game is going to fail in the future.

I think (and really hope) they'll make it perfeclty clear, time and time again during the tournament, that you can get the free early acess version with bethesda launcher instead of paying on steam. That SHOULD work...

If the players will like the game, like what they see, it won't matter. Just like every other popular title twice as expensive and countless times more populated. This game needs to succeed in long term, you are pretty short-sighted if you think the only chance this game has, is this tournament, there's going to be more and they can launch large campaigns, market the shit out of the free to play aspect whenever, wherever they want later on. Just by going free to play it's going to pop up everywhere on steam.

No lasting effect. The large majority is overreacting, you included.

It's very important to succeeding in the long term to not fail in the short to medium term.

You need to make a positive splash with a new and exciting product that attracts attention (1. The Game 2. Quakecon + Large Prize Pool). Then maximise starting player base (3. F2P) from which to build momentum via word of mouth, streaming and other events (Dreamhack etc.) leading to hopefully larger and larger stream viewership and popularity.

Id recognise most of this - hence the large prizepool - but don't quite yet have the exciting new product (Sacrifice as flagship mode really?) and risk shooting themselves in the foot re F2P. I think the game itself can be tweaked to become fantastic, it's just simply not ready.

They should have remained in proper private beta, or even alpha and redesigned some aspects before going full steam ahead like they are. What's the point of testing and getting feedback if you're not going to act on it?
The game clearly has potential and could be fantastic, but some fundamentals are just not right - bright skins, better team mode etc. Others have already written tons on this - not that id will ever listen....

It is partially, enough for it to count IMO. It's the best model for esports I'd say, keeps developers motivated to develop, and allows players to get hooked after seeing the game on twitch.

when the beta was first opened, you'd start with only Ranger unlocked but could rent the other champions for 5000 credits each, and that'd last for 24 hours. you get around 6000 credits for completing the three daily challenges so it isn't hard and doesn't cost you any real money.

this is how it will be for those who already have beta accounts and how it will be for everyone after the early access phase, if I understand it correctly. paying for the full version will just unlock all the characters forever.

Also, you can get champions from reliquaries, so by level 100 you're sure to have at least some for free.

And I assume there will be some kind of marketplace (so maybe you can sell two champions or 20 pairs of trousers to get enough platinum to buy one you'd rather have, stuff like that).

They are planning to intentionally drive players away, buy making a F2P game have an very expensive balloon payment in early access and at the same time making the game as unappealing as possible by effectively showing that it has a dead community from the get-go.

The whole "if you're in beta already keep playing on the bethesda app, if you want to play on steam throw a significant amount of money away".

The vast majority of games, especially online only shooters or whatnot, live or die due to their player base. N+1k and the game will gain n+1k players in a matter of hours or days, N-1k players at launch will not attract new players. We might have 20k players in the closed beta and playing the early access thingy via the Bethesda app, but if steam stats show that there are 30 people (those who buy the stuff on steam) ... that will not attract new players. QC with a 20k new players during the first week might generate 5k-10k early access players as well.

First of all did not expect it to be free at all, was surprised that they hinted at it being free upon full release.

29,99 is kind of expensive if you have nobody to play with.
Ofcourse we know that there are thousands of player playing via the Bethesda app, but someone who randomly comes across QC in steam listings might not know that.

I am talking about appearances, promotion and whatnot.
CoD can do whatever the fuck it wants because it has an established playerbase and hordes of zombieclients who will by default pick up no matter what.


Let me try to give an example ... in the early 2000s I used to play Q3 team games with my friends, the local scene was quite active and whatnot. If I now tried to get them back to playing team games in Reflex for example, I think it wouldn't go very well. Good game but the playerbase is in the small two figures ... under 20 atm and 33 peak for the last 24. Kind of hard to sell as a great pick for team based games like TDM or CTF. If the player base was 2k with a 3300 daily peak it would be another story.

This will happen, not may happen but will happen, many times during the next few months with QC. "Oh it would be fun to play Quake again, Q2 and Q3 were fantastic when I was a kid" ... "50 players according to steamstats? no thanks".


p.s I'd kind of say that money is the issue, because the netcode, mods and whatnot are suffering under the focus on cash grabbing with crates cosmetics. Primary focus should be on the core game, cosmetics can wait till full release and then added gradually or not added at all. I'd be willing to pay to not get drops and not put up with cosmetics shennanigans.

With current matchmaking (actually I wonder if it is realy working in any way on the skill base in current state), bugs and shuttering buying of QC is just payment to sponsoring further development. I wonder that steam release will hit much more than 60% of positive rates. I also cannot recommend to buy this game in current state - also because hitting small characters (slash/anarki) by weapons other than RL is so ANNOYING. I almost completely stopped playing at all in current QC version because of that.

Just in case you are trying out as many business and development models as you can until you find one that improves the state of the game, let me tell you that this is not where the problem lies.

I don't know how many times I have to mention this on this site.

We do not have any active content creators for Quake as a whole.

Frag movies don't count.

Games like Dota or Pubg don't get massive viewerships solely because of the game or genre.

Yes it might be niche as fuck when you're comparing Quake to any other shooters.


It purely comes down to content of viewership.

Prime example;

We all know that shitty block based game, pixelated as fuck, you know Minecraft?
How did it garner popularity? Funny as fuck content on Youtube. Interactive streamers etc.

You hop on to any stream when someone is jamming any of the quake titles and you'll see some fuck sitting behind his computer try harding the fuck out of the game, with no real activity, or interactivity.

Then you go watch some random shit game on twitch and the player is actually putting in the effort to interact with viewers and make things enjoyable.

Quake needs more quality content creators. Rapha for example doesn't try hard, he fucks around a lot on his stream but what makes it interesting from a retention point of view is because he speaks to his audience and actually chats about the game. Hell, he could switch to professional PacMan and I'd watch it because he'd probably share good information on it.

So making a game like quake F2P or slapping $10 - $59.99 price tag on it won't kill it or even doom it to failure.

It's the community behind it that make it a success.

I agree with this. Though I'd like to add that QC doesn't look 'cool', and that doesn't help its case. Something like PUBG 'looks' dull but still has some visual clarity to make it mildly aesthetically pleasing. QC's style is on the spectrum of what is called polygon blindness, and in a frenetic game that requires player/viewer to keep track of multiple things, it's really no appealing for anyone giving it a few glances.

In any case, I do not see any substantial playerbase improvements until the game is released. This is because once it is on Steam, and the F2P version is accessible to everyone, that's when people will give it a shot on the side, aiding in the retention of a percentage of those playing at that point.

Player base is too important today because otherwise we will see people trying and leaving after a while because of just getting stomped eventually. There's a number of examples of this happening in other games, and a large enough player base will help counter it by providing enough players at all skill levels.

Except that Minecraft is designed solely for the purpose of players to fuck around casually by expressing their creativity and imagination. Quake on the other hand is designed for competition, it requires more focus and skill to which the average viewer won't connect to unless he is playing the game himself, there's more downtime when the player is limited to just playing and concentrating on the matter at hand, also the average streamer wouldn't be Rapha who can time 4 items, count your rails and fuck around at the same time by nailing everyone to the wall.

It doesn't come down to anything purely, there are games that attract a lot of viewership, but have dramatically less active players, fighting games like Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Super Smash Bros. Melee. Then there are games that attract a lot of active players and not nearly as much viewers, the amount of people that actually watch League of Legends, CS:GO, Dota 2, Starcraft 2 is quite a small proportion of the actual players, and these are the games that do the best in their respective genre.

Then there's Quake, yes, it is niche as fuck compared to other shooters. You can't just account for that and then just dismiss it, because it makes it so much more difficult to attract players to it. CPMA was a niche of a niche and look how much players it attracted? Barely more than 17.

Quake needs a steady. as in not declining and large enough player base to build upon, we need to attract players and it won't happen by funny Youtube videos, but by actually making a game players enjoy, appropriately supported by features of this century, the occasional event wouldn't hurt too.

Even now I still find myself amazed at how many people on esreality actually want the game to fail.

There are some people here like vidje and megaman3 who seem like they'd never be happy with any sort of news. It kinda makes sense though. Why put yourself at risk of beeing optimistic and disappointed when you can be always negative and be relatively safe.

But you're going at it wrong. For you it helps, but for the game's development it actually is hurting. Instead of sitting there saying how much the game sucks and criticizing every move bethesda/id makes, all the while predicting and (almost?) wishing an early death, why not try to see the good there is ? Criticism is fine, but when you just do that for the sake of bringing down the game, what good is it for ?

Personally, I don't think the game is bad, but it's far from good yet. On the other hand, game isn't even released yet. So help it grow if you like Quake. I personally often like and/or share news, contents or whatever ESL or Bethesda publishes, I try to retweet streamers or quake community people, I give my own feedback to the game to the devs... You too can do it. If all of you reading this was doing the same the game would be healthier, and probably much closer to what you expect of a quake game.

I didn't mean to be dishonest at all, just calling it as I see it. I want QC to be popular; Quake is the only game I have skills in really, it will take me months to learn realistic shooters. However I'm aware of my surroundings and I can't see QC getting even close to the popularity of TF2. I've just bought a new rig and I'll stream on the day of the steam launch and I'll try and create some Quake content on youtube. It just really feels like its going to be a losing battle and that people just aren't interested in Quake. Hopefully now you get where I'm coming from.

Doesnt matter what kind of news they read about Quake Champs they will all the time criticize and talk crap about it instead to show some support as a quake fan. Devs really try hard ti make their fans happy, but they are not robots to fulfill everyones wish and they are doing it smart way especially with not releasing more modes and old maps. Why would you play map that have u played 15 years before? Go back to Quake Live then. And modes? The more modes QC has the more seperated are players and the activitly is at low number since every player plays his own mode. Let community bring together and play 1-3 modes instead.

I don't want the game to fail, that's not the reason for my so-called negativity. I actually played the shit out of the game, and with every patch after cbt3 being worse and worse for me I just started not liking the game.

Also, not putting in $1 for this game until they turn it from a pile of shit it is at the moment (poor engine performance, even worse netcode, horrible game modes to say the least) to a decent end product. If it ever happens that is.

I could even go to a greater detail, but cba as I don't really care about the game anymore. No, you just see a situation and you have a feeling what will happen next based on what you know about hungry tigers and opportunities for that person to save himself. And also imagine this situation and how people might respond to it: will you see a lot of yours "try to see the good there is"?

I look at QC and think that SyncError made a lot of bad decisions that will not lead the the game to success unless changed. This is just my feeling how the things will evolve based on my observation of what game design we have, not connected in any way to my wishes.

If you need to send someone to run 10 km to alert people about danger, and he decides to take 50 kg backpack with him, you don't encourage it, you make sure that he's as perfectly suited as possible for that task.
QC release is exactly the kind of situation which cannot afford even a slightlest fail, so by closing eyes and supporting whatever they do is precisely ruining that last chance, which is the opposite of what we all want.

Instead of acting in a "good way", you need to see into the future, think of the outcome you want and act in the way that can produce the best outcome, even if it means not being extremely polite and tolerant. If you support QC now, what the outcome will be? A mediocre game that has high probability of failure. How exactly this is a good thing?

The best part about being a QuakeDad is actually playing the game for fun.

How is blind support going to improve anything in the long run? The way you use your money is the strongest message and feedback to companies. The people here urging to support "just because it's Quake" are vile beasts trying to influence the message people want to send, thus giving the "company" a wrong impression about how well they are doing and thus stunting the progress.

Some people, dem0n included, are acting like a religious sect. They've got nothing to say for this game aside from the fact that it's Quake and that we should be happy that they're making a new one.

Disregard common sense, don't apply logic, don't look at previous track record from the same developer when it comes to multiplayer games. Hell, disregard everything that happened and still happens during the beta lifetime of this game. Why? Because it's a new Quake and you should be happy.

Poor engine performance even on good rigs, sound cues non-existant, netcode that reliably works only on LAN, travesty of a team mode, duel almost in the same rank of horrible. Doesn't matter, it's a new Quake and you should be happy.

A ton of valid champion balance feedback ignored (regarding abilities like Nyx's ghost walk for example) because the developers like it and it works well in their 1200 elo in-house games. Sticking stubbornly to sacrifice even after their own, twitter-ran, poll showed it's the least enjoyable and popular mode by far because they're hell bent on reinventing the wheel. Who cares, it's a new Quake game and you should be happy.

To give even a better picture of the reasoning these nutcases like dem0n go by, let me paraphrase a conversation that happened on The Q.C. discord between dem0n, myself and a well known 3rd person. The 1 mil QCon got announced and I said something along the lines, "doesn't matter how much money they put in to it, I'd never even consider playing such a tournament because I don't like the game". Enter dem0n, calling me a retard (or just thinking in an idiotic way). Enter well known 3rd person, just waiting for the opportunity to agree with dem0n I suppose. So I've flipped the tables and said, "look, you've got OW which is big, there's a ton of money in it, there's a whole ecosystem around it, why don't you play it since money's that of a big factor for you?". They both replied with "because I don't like the game". So then I was a bit lost, because that's what I said for QC and yet I'm the retard, but those two aren't. So I asked them for clarification to see where I'm wrong seeing how they just proved my point. They both replied with "Because it's Quake". You get the picture.

So in the end, it somehow seems that you're entitled to your own opinion as long as it's the generally accepted one, or the one that's shared by majority of high profile people in the community. Once you stray away from that, the sect lunatics start their shit show, calling you out for "wanting the game to fail", "never happy with any news", "criticizing all time and talking crap", etc while the truth is completely opposite.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion as long as it's a positive one. Why? Because it's a new Quake game and you should be happy.

First of all, I never wrote that you're trying to gain advantage off of anyone. I wrote that you're comparable to those religious nutcases based on you and similar people having no real arguments for the game aside from that it's Quake.

I never said I didn't like abilities or premise of the game. I said that the game has technical issues that weren't fixed since day one of closed beta, no matter what the patch logs stated (like fixed 0dmg rockets for example). I also wrote that the game modes suck and the devs seem too stubborn to walk away from such bad concepts for reasons unknown. Yes, they'll continue to tweak sacrifice and other modes, but at best it'll be average. Plus, even at this point there's hard to find people interested in that mode aside from those attending QCon.

The arguments "it's a beta, why are you complaining?" or "it's not even released yet" are probably the single biggest bullshit arguments ever. I'm not complaining because the game is bad in beta, I'm complaining because there's very little positive progress being made. I don't doubt the devs are working hard, I'm just saying that whatever they're doing doesn't seem to be working out.

"If you really love Quake..." bla bla bla. Don't be an idiot, don't compare me to Apple or Blizzard fanatics. If I loved one Quake, that doesn't mean I'll unconditionally jump on every other Quake ship that sails while crying out "id take my money!!!".

As weird as this might sound to a non-player, to me PUBG feels more like classic Quake than QC does. It's proper deathmatch, no simplifications to avoid stomping noobs, no gimmicks, immensely popular.

There's a good reason why lots of Quakers now are playing PUBG and OW, even when there's no real money to be made in those at the moment. The reason is they are the 2017's Quake, and weirdly enough Quake Champions is not it.

I really love Quake. I have played for well over 5000hrs by my own estimate in a period of about 4 or 5 years. I love Quake because it's highly responsive, uncompromising, unrestricting, customisable and brutally honest.

I tried to get hooked again with Quake. I even considered upgrading monitor to 144hz and maybe get new graphics. But all in all, after playing some games, mostly FFA (which I super liked in QL) I just realized the game isn't as fun as I would like to.

It's fucking clunky as fuck. Everything feels clumped. Playing QuakeLive was like flying, playing QC feels like walking in mood.

Meanwhile: shroud, PUBG streamer, has 50k viewers. QuakeCon will peak at 8k :D

I was as hyped with this game that I spent 450 bucks to buy a gtx1060 in my poor third world country one week before beta started, after CBT3 i saw the game was "improving" too slow technically, and netcode was actually regressing. After CBT6 i stopped playing completely out of sheer frustration.

The concept of having different quake playstyles in the same game was great, but the implementation has been poor. Whats worse Tim and the rest look like classic politicians ignoring facts and hyping a mediocre product.

I have always been a huge quake fanboy, the game ive spent more time in my life playing, but as others have posted QC is being pretty effective removing my will to play quake at all. Last two months ive just played street fighter 2´ CE because im still a gamer and enjoy playing and competing games that are fun but also technically sound.

At least it looks like what QC will do pretty nicely is killing the genre quickly and forever.

Champions are good for quake in general, it brings new blood. I see just few problems with qc: why the f id picked bad engine for esport game? Why not allow force enemy models ( use microtransactions for other small details @ look csgo)? Why the f esport game have so shit netcode ( its not 1996, they could copy idea from tons of games witch already have good netcode)? You just dont release beta if it doest have small options like customize crosshair, sensitivity. Id should try listen for community, if we want classic game mode, give it to us, look witch mode are more popular. Imho champions and round system is to drastic for quake. New players need some tutorials, strafing, shooting, weapon combos and give achievements , noobs love it. AND mosy of all they are working f to long for updating game. Steam is industry standard for gaming, it's like complaining that you need to install Windows to play quake.

Steam is cancer though and quake used to be playable on both linux and mac.

I would love Steam too if I actually liked it, because the problem is as you said, Steam is industry standard for gaming. However I don't agree with this because I like my games in a bundle of a case, a manual and the fully game on CD or corresponding. Today almost no games released on PC can be accessed without Steam, which in turn means Valve has monopoly over the gaming industry. I don't know with you, but I don't like the fact that one company have this advantage, because all companies are money horny and will abuse the system.

1) They are add ons to core functionality which can be safely ignored
2) If you decide to use them because you think those features are great, then you have no reason to complain. If you think they are not great, but still decide to use them, then the problem lies in your poor mental capabilites, not Steam.

It's a huge game publishing platform as well as a gaming "social network" that benefits greatly from it's network effect more so than any technical advantage. Everything from the cuts, to the store and the way things are shown there, to overlay's performance, to the disappearing chat log is under reasonable question. Damn right I have reason to complain, as it's users and steam's place in the market rather than the technology that attracts me, other users and game developers.

This is all irrelevant for playing games.
To play games you need a list of games that you have and a "Play" button.
