Well i have to be honest, Quake 2 feels like it is the most ignored Quake game, like, no one gives a shit about it.

For me, Quake 2 will always remain the best and most fun game to play, i spent years playing TDM and Duel and DM and it was a blast, the community is not that huge ( compared to other Quake games ) but the q2scene is always there to revive the game, we got EDL and 2x2 and even jump mod tournaments and a lot of people wait for the fall in order to participate in them.

PURRI, Damiah and various old-school players still participate in EDL for expl and they wait each year in order to show who is the best.

QuakeCon made a q2 20th anniversary Duel tournament which was won easily by David, when they announced it, i was really happy cause Quake 2 will finally have its chance to be seen by players around the world, but yet, it was totally ignored and the whole coverage went for the Quake Champions tournament.

I mean, am not really surprised by the light shed on the QC tournament but come on, its the 20th anniversary of one of the best Quake games and we got nothing ? just a tournament which had 0 coverage ? no news posts or events or anything at all ?

And again, its not just that, let's see Quake Champions for expl : It has a lot of stuffs from Quake 1, from Quake 3, from Quake LIVE and even Quake 4 !!

But what about Quake 2 ? no we got nothing, nothing at all, just a Railgun model ( which honestly looks crappy and the model is taken from Quake Wars and not Quake 2, and the description says that it has a blue trail and it is just green like the other model ).

Yes, that's it, a part from a Logo ( lolz ) we got nothing, no maps, no champions, nothing at all, i expected at least a Grunt model with hand grenades or anything from q2 but nothing.

I said this before and i will say it again, Quake 2 is the most ignored Quake game ever, am not asking the people to like it or start playing it, each person likes a different game, but am asking idsoftware, at least make something in QC related to q2 ( and no, i don't want a crappy q2dm1 port that we get with each quake version )

So yeh, i got a bit carried away but, for the q2 20 anniversary, we got a Duel tournament which was won by David, so Congrat to the polish champion ! :)

And i hope Quake 2 gets some love......

If you rewatch those media clips that were played on stream between QuakeCon matches, they pretty much always had mentions and/or visuals of Q1 and Q3, but rarely of Q2. What is even more interesting is that Q4 didn't even get those. Atleast Q2 was involved in a clip or two, and in others there were background shots of the game and a Q2 style trophy. But Q4? Seems even id have completely forgetten it existed.

Well noted. Q4 was a game that lost almost all of the features of a iD Software game, because after all it was mostly done by Raven Software. If Q4 was made like Doom3 (personality and appearance, liek a real "iD game"), it has been more popular, I believe it.

Id are likely to present Athena as a champion in QC, she started out as a model in q2, passive ability: handgrenade, active: bfg9000 xD. However I fully agree, could've been more focus on the best selling quake of all times.

Q1 sold more copies than Q2, just saying :P

Edit: Quake sold approximately 1.8 million copies and Qauke 2 1 million.

You say the the Quake 2 Quakecon tournamernt was mostly ignored in terms of streaming but that also goes for the Quake 2 community with David being the only notable signup of the 6 entrants.

I definitely think they need to add some more Quake 2 to Quake Champions though. They could add both players models, Major and Athena with different characteristics and abilities (no idea what)
Then there's the weapons. Quake 2 Railgun and Rocket Launchers were both very nice, especially the RL with it's loading animation. Also the shotguns, Quake 2's Super Shotgun was arguably the best looking/sounding shotgun in the Quake series!

I'm sure we will get The Edge remade for QC but would be nice to see some of the others, however none seem to stick out in peoples minds when remembering Quake levels.

I agree with everything, but I have to also admit that at least Q2 is not as overlooked by the community than Q4. Not that Q4 has been so bad, but it just does not fit like a game in the series (as I've said above, it's a game practically done only by Raven).

I expected it, but I still hoped that QuakeCon could pay more attention to Q2, but that obviously did not happen. At least David drew attention with his incredible skills! This was very positive!

But with that said, I think the Q2 community itself should do something great this year, just like the QW community did last year(was beautiful), with a big event on LAN, transmitted via stream, all the shit. I mean, I expected more from the community ITSELF than just from QuakeCon, they're only interested in business.

Now the most I know that can happen this year is more an EDL online, nothing different or special...

Yeah true, but there were like 8 participants - probably the reason why Q2 failed :( David could win them 1v7 :)

Hey guys I have a website that I started at the beginning of 2017 to celebrate the amazing worlds within a world that was all built by the player communities that is Quake 2. A lot of the good old stuff has been lost forever already and so I have a Tom Hanks-like sense of urgency about recording all the stories, except that in my metaphor it's not WW2 veterans, it's Quake 2 veterans. And I was at QuakeCon representing Quake 2 along with other members of the railwarz (instagib CTF) player community. It was my first time attending QuakeCon and I thought it was the best experience ever, if just to have the feeling like finding one's tribe. The QuakeCon execution from the venue, to the talent, to the esports, was well done and I think there wer nothing but good intentions behind the Quake 2 tournament, as evidenced by the prize money and that David was able to attend, first time in the USA for him. I was fortunate enough to get to hang out with the railwarz crew and David one night, and for the biggest killa in Q2 right now, the guy could not have been more thoughtful, down to earth, the opposite of the archetype of "the best Quake 2 player in the world." I was also extremely stoned the entire time on these funky nuclear strength edibles made from the material left after vaporizing the plant in a long tubed vaporizer. TL:DR I loved the whole QuakeCon experience and I definitely want to go again next year. Although they missed the boat having a bunch of elite Quake 2 players in their tournament, they did bring David to USA for his first trip here and for many of the Quake 2 players who attended this year's thing, I'm speaking for myself and railwarzin' hookers, that made the QuakeCon experience way more amazing.

Maybe we can learn from the missed opportunities and make the best Quake 2 tournament ever for next year's QuakeCon. That would make more sense for the 20th anniversary: 1998 was THE YEAR of Quake 2. At this time in '97 Q2 wasn't even released yet. So yeah I agree there needs to be more Quake 2 anniversary discussion. ALSO I feel that many of you would enjoy playing Quake 2 railwarz - Why not?

About your experiences in QuakeCon, I'm glad everyone in the railwarz community (I know Beav and Greenz, great guys). It must have been something unforgettable.

Over all that has happened, I think everyone could have really learned something this year and then have a new opportunity to create something great for next year's event! After all, Q2 was released (hastily, just saying) just before Christmas 97, but in fact it's a game of 98!

quake2 was "my" game . And TDM in this game was absolutely amazing . And it was a time of magic , kindoff like the beginning of UFC , alot of different people with different strategies and huge skillgaps, making the whole thing so good .

But today with todays skill i think quake2 has lost alot of its "charm".
I dont think it has aged as well as the others.

Rockets are just boring, rail is dominant , and chaingun doesnt give off a good feeling .

And i enjoy watching quakeworld more then quake2 .

But all said, yes Quake2 do deserve some more love , i dont know if there are enough active players to make high skilled interesting TDM\CTF tournaments.

But what i would like to see is the old schoolers back at it again,
in some kind of "memory lane" tournament.

As spectacular that would be I think there would be quite a few blow outs :) Surely some of these players have spent quite some time gaming over the last decades while others haven't. But I would donate ;)

There were many good TDM players that I remember, like Provi, shugg, Aone, Pogo, Gerppa, Myrmidon, Scooby, and more that fail me the memory.

It is, after a long time of practice, that Q2 is very rail-heavy, and the CG is very OP. Hitscans are the main weapons, but rockets and hyperblasters are very useful at times appropriate for their use. But this does not take away the brightness of the game, on the contrary. Achieving excellence in Q2 is a very challenging thing (mainly because of the slow switch of weapons), and the most challenging of all quake series for sure. =)

I got over my disappointment awhile ago. I am still happy that the tournament even happened, especially when you consider how unpopular the game has become among Quake-aficionados.

I think we could of had a decent turnout for NA even though most of the players have moved on, if the tournament rules weren't crap (custom paks and timers are a must) to begin with. Also, the tournament would have to be free to enter and not require a BYOC ticket.

I agree, tickets to have a seat to BYOC slot is sucked!

But I think custom paks (or with at least bright skins) and timers, this is not something really significant. Q2 well configured can get very beautiful and comfortable, mainly used with q2pro client.

Well, there's a bunch of dudes (in chile) playing every friday in a 200 fraglimit server, cuz 20 years of Q2.

See, quake 2 was a big thing here, back in the day almost every computer can run it with no problems, that, and the development of the very first big game servers in chile, made the game very popular, lan parties and shit.

Quake 1 was present, but not as a big thing as Quake 2.
