I love Quake,
But I hate Champions

Man where to begin? I tried to like the game but it became pretty clear, pretty fast, that I was more annoyed than entertained when playing.

The netcode/animations are bad.

The sound is horrible.

I can't see SHIT. So frustrating.

I don't like the abilities. To me they seem to make the game more +backish. Dueling nyx is so annoying and boring, for an instance, and weak characters just flee everytime they are hit for more than 50 dmg.

I hate the speed cap. Get that weak shit out of here.

I don't like the stack system. Map control is non-existing. I would rather have any armor collectable, regardless of current stack (200/200 max), and then just let the armor decay when it gets above your character's value, I think.

There are no entertaining modes for me. I dislike the 3 frag limit duel (and being forced to change champions).

I miss CA.... And my picmip'ed shaft -_-.

What I like? Hard to say, maybe how the maps look. If only the enemymodel didn't blend in like they do.

And I dislike the butt-ugly weapon models that just HAVE to take up half the screen. I need some cg_gunX/Y/Z.... Yeah I know I can remove them entirely with launch commands, but I have always used drawgun 1.

I played with hudgun 3 [edit: might've been 2, it was the third option that made the models transparent] in QL so I thought I'd prefer this better but it seems to only feel better when using the railgun. Interesting find nevertheless. I wish they'd implement a weapon-specific version of this.

I can't play because not enough people to search for games in ZA. And I'm not gonna hang around on whatsapp channels to organize games, I just wanna go online and join an existing game.

Ironically Quakelive is still going in ZA, because gee, I can actually find a game at anytime of the day.

I watched a couple of games from Quakecon and found the duel format boring, and very same-ish every round, basically because you are resetting the match constantly. Eish.

Game is honestly ruined, the player base is decaying, when it gets below 500 no one is gonna be able to find games.

The idea of adding abilities was dumb. If people want to play something like that, they will play overwatch, overwatch players will not switch to quake. (See: every other game trying to be overwatch)

Instead all people that wanted to play quake got something else.

The active ones yeah, the passive ones could've made a great successor to CPM if they weren't limited to champions. As it is now to me it feels like what casual is in csgo, except there's no competitive mode.

Of course it's not by any stretch the only bad thing but like I've said previously - you can't put your faith in people who think zoom rail should do more damage. It's not by any means one of the bigger issues but it just goes to show what passes for game design at id. Any thing they do right is, I'm certain, pure luck. After all a broken clock is still correct twice a day.

Did you mean to say passive abilities? I barely mentioned the active ones. The problem with the active abilities is like ix said in another thread it's just poor game design to have "press x to perform complex action". That's why they'll always be gimmicky get out of jail free cards as opposed to something like strafejumping which inherently has a performance band relying on execution.

You don't like any of the active abilities? I think that Ranger's direorb (minus the splash damage & telefrag) is a very dynamic ability and could fit into "traditional Quake" quite nicely.

Like I said - it's "press x to perform complex action". It's bad game design for an FPS. It's rock-paper-scissors gimmicks. Cooldowns also fall into that category for an FPS.

Regarding direorb if you remove the damage it's another get out of jail free card. You keep the damage and put it in a weapon ala grappling hook and I'm very much ok with it.

Dislike:
- The low budget presentation and the lousy engine. The game looks, sounds and feels like a Russian F2P title.
- Laggy servers outside the US and EU. For a FPS game -and one aiming to succeed around the world-, that's not an aspect to save budget on.
- Lack of content. Very few maps, and half of them are Q3 remakes. Game offers nothing more than multiplayer -also based on Q3-, and a short tutorial.
- Sacrifice being pushed as the main team-based gametype. It's just the wrong choice, provided it has the least players in pub play and it has been remade twice to no avail. Does no one at id realize Sacrifice is just boring to play in any other configuration than the niche it is to play with everybody on Discord?
- The multiple screens in between MM and before actually playing. It's about two whole minutes wasted on unnecessary waiting, every single match ("ready up", vote map, choose character, waiting for others to load, character intro, warm up). Add to that having to restart the game due to the memory leak issue (not fixed in four months so far), and the long queue times especially outside EU, and of my playing time (having the game open) I'd say about 1/4 of it was actually spent playing.
- Nyx's ability.

Like:

+ The money and the opportunities. QC is our pay day.
+ That they still tried to make a new Quake, despite QL having failed hard.
+ I for one like having abilities and characters. If you want to keep on playing Q3, play Q3/QL.
+ More or less feels like a Quake game, despite it being Champions: Quake.
+ No CA.
+ Anarki

I can see enemies sometimes, when the are not micro stuttering like hell, or warping like hell, or being hit by stuff, or the screen tends to go black like, when you get hit (directly?) by rockets, when you use Mynx's ability while getting hit at the same time, and my favorite, for no apparent reason but the map being excessively dark in places.

Then there is so much shit blocking your view, explosions, particles, 'plasma trails', acid spit, your own specials, your own giant gun models,

visibility is really kind of an issue

I think they should create a CA type game mode to retain some casual players

I'm not a big fan of CA and all the lame camping, waiting in between rounds and shit talking from the people who are waiting in between rounds that comes along with it, but it's always been the most casual friendly game mode (q1, q2, q3, ql) and always had the most active servers (NA atleast).

Not sure how they could tweak it for champions etc, but a team game mode where you have a single life per round seems like it really appeals to people and would be simpler for people to spec as well, look at CS GO etc, maybe keep the CA basics and just introduce some sort of objective (even just have RA and Mega spawn so people have to move around the map and not just camp)

I also think they underestimated how important it is to the quake community to be able to use the console and completely customize the game (visibility etc). Since quake 1 people have been able to tweak almost every aspect of the visuals to their liking, and not having that really makes quake champions feel much less like quake. I think it also added a different dimension to the spectating, knowing each player had a different set up(different picmip, mapoverbrightbits, truelightning, enemy model etc etc) it gave the individual players some personality knowing they have customized things that just isn't there when everyone is essentially forced to play with the same settings.

Overall I am optimistic and looking forward to the actual release and patches

I love abilities, you can "one punch" enemy with the right setup and timing. It has always been frustrating chasing around your enemy chipping away little by little only to catch a bad rocket and your forced to be on the back foot. When it was symmetric i think stalemates was possible if player didn't take big risks.

You have to work so hard to put damage on him and then he just magically undoes it for free and disappears to suck up all the timer orbs again. Stacks are even (like most of the time), Raisy eats 4 rails from Av3k, Av3k gets some 7's from Raisy's shaft, touches vomit and the tides have changed, Raisy goes out as the winner of this skirmish.

Just yesterday, hit two direct rockets in succession and did no damage.

It was like the enemy had invulnerability for a few seconds.

I had this against a sorlag, hit 2x zero damage rockets, the 3rd did 86, the 4th did 100, the 5th was another zero rocket, then she spat on me and I died.
