I think anyone who relies on Anarki/Sorlag is on borrowed time.

Those characters IMO are going to get Nerfed and such players are going to find winning harder with them overnight and those who have resisted not going there are going to get stronger.

Makes sense in principle, but it's not going to be the case in QC. The champions in this game are really easy to pick up.

The sole exception, of being a niche champion that requires some dedication, is Slash.

Sorlag is likely to get a health/armour nerf at the very least, Anarki is likely to become easier to hit. Both of those factors play a sizeable part in why certain players have done well with those characters, reduce the effectiveness of those characteristics, and you reduce the winrate of those using them.

Reduced sorlag's health/armor & speed so its more in tune with his apparent 290 and other tanks, you would have a better/fairer game overnight and it would take very little time to do.

Never disagreed on that. Just saying that if Anarki and Sorlag are hit hard then you can easily pick up other champions, and continue to do well. Playing Nyx, Ranger, Visor, Galena or Doom isn't rocket science.

As I said, the only useful character that's weird to use at first is Slash, so that's the only useful character you can't just pick up fast. At the same time, that means you can pick up the other 10 characters and still be competitive. In QC it takes no more than a weekend and a couple of tips to master a champion. The only other weird character is Clutch, but Clutch is useless so there's no reason to get used to playing him.

In this type of games what all good players do is to have a core position or preference, and then pick the best characters of your specialty. Then when your best gets nerfed you can just switch characters, because you know how to play the position already.

For example, when Sorlag gets nerfed what people will do in Sacrifice is to get their Sorlag player to now pick Scalebearer. Simple. When Nyx gets severely nerfed, that player will pick Doom (actually that strat is done today already, in Lockbox), and when all the fast characters are nerfed people will play Ranger.

What would be counterproductive is to not pick Nyx right now, now that she's OP, thinking it'd be better to only focus in a middle of the pack character that's not going to get nerfed in the future, like say Visor. No, what matters is to win right now and also in the future, and so the way to do so is to pick the best characters today (Nyx) and in the future (say Ranger -- but only focus on him when he's OP and not today).

I have a good laugh anyways when I see ppl in gym drinking their protein shakes after a workout and looking themselves in the mirror.

I know that almost everyone takes some kind of supplement nowadays and that it has become the norm, but still is like taking viagra for having sex and when u stop working out u lose whatever u gained pretty fast.

Actually it takes about 2-3 months to you start to begin losing muscle mass, obviously it's different for everyone but that's a good benchmark.

Also muscle memory is a real thing, if you trained for 2 years then stopped training for an entire year, you could get back to where you were within a few months.

In certain disciplines I actually agree totally, like for example sprinting or bodybuilding. If you're someone who has terrible genetics, it doesn't matter how much work-ethic or drive you have, you will NEVER ever get anywhere close to the top guys, you'll be a damn good athelete but you won't be the very top.

E-sports though I think it's different. You need some skill yes, but I don't think genetics necessarily play a pivotal role in how good someone can get, as I said fatal1ty did otherwise, he wasn't naturally amazing but he outworked everyone.

Quake is not a game of intelligence, but a game of repetition, deliberate practice, having a practice partner, and of basic motor skills that when mastered do make a huge difference. A game of knowledge (of "situations") and of aiming/dodging, not of intelligence (act on the fly). Those factors beat talent, and by a large margin.

Czm is a bright person, maths Phd and a former top player, but put him in QC or QL against a dumb teenager like clawz and he doesn't stand a chance. After all Quake is only a videogame, and a first person shooter at that, the dumbest genre.

For example, a loooot of top Quake players aren't the brightest of the bunch, to say the least. Heck, at most 10 top players in history have done something outside Quake that shows they are smart (for example thresh, fatality, czm, lexer), while at the same time there's many that have done nothing whatsoever and have shown the opposite. Look at the top8 at Quakecon and see who they are and how they behave: it's a bit sad to see the majority in the real world would be considered to be eurotrash or rednecks.

Sorry but outside this website cooller would be judged as an uneducated 31yo pensioner, that only plays videogames all day, that wasted a small fortune on his 20s (not only on the boat trip), that already has lost his sole appeals and money makers (body and winning in Quake), and now is likely poorer and dumber than every single one of us posters (well outside Jamerio, but you know). I would say that intelligence can help reduce the duration of practice needed. You can work hard and get results. But if you work smartly, you can also achieve the same results in a shorter amount of time. I think that's how Rapha achieved what he did without living in the EU and playing against a high level of competition regularly. He spent his time smartly by analyzing his games and the games of others. Even though Evil surely had probably much more playtime than Rapha leading up to last year's Quakecon.

Also, without some level of self-reflection and awareness, too much dedication can be bad thing. I agree with your statement that it's about repetition and practice. Indeed. But habits developed through repetition are difficult to change and if you develop bad habits, which can happen without realizing it, that's not good. It requires a degree of intelligence and insight to identify what are bad habits (like overly risky in some situations, too reliant on outaiming an opponent, lack of confidence in other situations, etc.) so you can avoid developing them.

Simply put: Dedication alone can lead to success. Intelligence can help offset some of the dedication needed to be successful. But intelligence and dedication is formidable.

It definitely is, of course you can prepare yourself for every situation possible you can think of, but you still need to react rapidly to everything, and be able to do something decent when something unexpected happens.

There isn't just one type of intelligence, just because if you being intelligent in that, doesn't translate to accumulating knowledge from a book or whatever, doesn't mean that you aren't intelligent at all.

When you hear pros like Rapha talk about the game, you can definitely feel that there is a deep understanding of it. It's just a game but the average joe on the street doesn't have a deep understanding of anything...

I do think anyone can become a pro at videogames; even forum trolls. There's almost no barriers of entry: a Belarussian teen can win a major tournament.

The thing is actual pros are very few in the world, so little actual competition, because most people (and their families behind them) have the conception that pro gaming is a horrible financial decision, so they would rather be busy doing other stuff like studying or working. They happen to be right, because outside for maybe 100 people in history the opportunity cost alone is higher. Pro gaming is a waste of time and of money, for the vast majority of people in it.

I mean, nobody really knows if that forum troll you are replying to could actually manage to beat the Belarrusian teen, provided he went full time pro in order to compete under the same conditions. Too bad that doesn't happen, because money is a thing.

I do think if Quake was more profitable rapha wouldn't have been the QL world champion, but some kid in Asia would. Rapha the world champ won 175k in 10 years of exclusive dedication: not much at all, so not many people played professionally in order to compete with him. How many full time pros were there in QL's history, so that they actually compete against one another under fair conditions? Maybe 3?

I understand QC's differences with previous Quakes is a factor, but I also think the bigger prize pool is a factor on why new and returning names took the podium at Quakecon (clawz, voo, cooller), who went semi-pro at Quake for the first time ever or first time in 5 or 10 years even, with that increase in actual competition resulting in leaving the QL guys behind.

Nobody really knows fox's potential, considered to be one of if not the most talented Quake player, because he never went pro. I think he only lost at tournaments because he rarely played, but had he put the same time as the only three guys that went pro in QL then rapha likely wouldn't have been the best.

I (the forum troll -- alike that fellow poster) somewhat faced that decision this year, because I chose to work less for two weeks in order to qualify for DHW, which I luckily did. I managed to beat and even stomp guys that on paper were many times better than myself, but it only took two hours a day for two weeks of actual practice to catch their decades of duel experience, by playing to learn and watching videos. Those semi-semi pro 14 hours were the edge, but one very few Quakers have had in their lives, so I know I won because I had more time rather than being more talented. There's a reason why most just fool around in CA after work, rather than go study videos to actually get better.

On the other side of the coin though, even when I won the free trip + accomodation, which should amount to about $2,000 in paid for expenses (expensive dates to fly in), I still lost more money by working less. Actually I will lose even more in the week lost at the event. Great. Of course as an amateur I value the experience itself to be of higher value than that amount. And certainly goes without saying I'm not taking a two months break to train for the chance of winning 10k, but I do appreciate the "free" trip if it's a one time thing (ok maybe a two-time: I would like to attend to Quakecon one day).

I'll give you and example, no one can be born and know how to play drums.

The reason is simple, to play drums you need to independently move each of your arms and legs under different tempo and syncing each limb to its beat.

This is something no human does, and so we do not have this pathway in our brain.

NO, you train, you train by first just practicing one leg, simple beat.
Then you repeat for weeks.
Then you add one arm simple beat.
You repeat for weeks.
Then you keep adding until you get to all 4, simple beat, repeat and start adding more and more complicated patterns.

If you played another instrument, you probably already learned to independently controll your your hands, so it might be easier.

While you do all this shit, your brain is FORMING NEW PATHWAYS IN YOUR BRAIN, it has nothing to do with IQ, its just something new to you, which you didn't know to do, and now you do.

Everyone can do that, in theory, but not everyone is top level musician.

Practicing, and knowing what to practice WILL create new pathways that you can later utilize, but its up to you what you want to practice, will it be pure mechanic skills, or will you develop full analytic skills, and always have superb map knowledge and overview of the situation.

IQ helps utilizing your newly "created" skills in creative ways, and combine them together.
