I know what you mean. I actually had that exact same feeling when first starting to use this pad. But you actually get used to it pretty fast. It's just that you have to lift your hand a bit more than you're used to.

In a fact, sometime before the Frostpad I used the original Icemat that measures 20x25 flipped 90 degrees so that horizontally I only had 20cm space. I actually got used to using that too, with a medium sensitivity.

Hey, cool initiative to bring back a discontinued but legendary product.

I built three 50x40cm^2 glasspads myself with pretty much the same attributes: acid etched both sides (more smooth and planar than sandblasted), 4mm thickness, grinded/polished edges, rubber stops, etc.
The glide is pretty unchallenged and all three versions track well with g400, g400s, g403 and g pro.

Those things are so damn awesome that I built 3 just out of pure interest.
So at a certain point in time I had 3 of them, but then I dropped a bottle of milk on the first one and my brother stole the second one, now I am using the third/last one.
First had a small chess like background, second has a urban-digital-camouflage background and the third one has a multi-size/layer-urban-hexagon-camouflage background, but on all three versions I added tiny reflective particles inbetween the glasspad and the background foil.

I would suggest to not pre-produce a number of units in a rather small size (30x25cm^2), but instead to manufacture upon request with custom sizes.
I know this will be a pain in the ass to implement, increase the delivery time and annoy the glassworks, but I am quite sure that the rather small size of the icemat was the main downside.

Anyway, best of luck with your project and may the glide be with you.

I'm thinking about having a custom option, where one could the size, color and logo. But like you said, it is a pain in the ass because then I'd have to get custom styrofoams and boxes for all the different sizes. It would be a nightmare.

There's also a thing that most people don't realize when thinking about a glass surface that's any bigger than this size. That is simply that it's actually very unpractical in many instances. If you need to move it, ( to wash, or take it to a LAN or any gaming event) you are much more likely to bump it somewhere and in the worst case, brake it. Also people who are not gamers don't want a mousepad that covers half their desk.

One important thing is also the weight when it comes to shipping expenses. If I were to increase the size any more than this, the total weight would increase to over 1kg, making the shipping costs about 10€ more. That would just be very impractical. One other thing when it comes to shipping is also the fact that the more you increase the size, the more you increase the risk of something happening to it during the shipping.

I'd say 30x35 is the max size, considering everything. I'm gonna have to see if I can get a business account with the Finnish postal service so I would get the shipping expenses down, then I might include a larger size option.

That is true. I haven't really thought about it, because I just had to transport them back home via the backseat of a car.
But you are right, with constant thickness but increased plane dimensions it is more likely to damage it during transport and getting a fitting packaging box will get frustrating, also shipping costs will rise.
I as an enthusiast would say that the impressive glide makes up for that with ease, but normal people might not share my opinion.

Regarding custom logos, I think black is best from a producer's perspective, it has the the highest aesthetical acceptance and the safest tracking properties.

I believe strenx has always used a cloth mat.

The most notable quakers who ever have used the icemat are toxic and fox. I believe they still both use it, at least tox.

I also remember prozac using the icemat in his prime tdm days.

Actually ive always wanted to go back to cloth , but i just hate the sticky feeling of cloth with micromovements , it feels like there is some sticky material on the mousefeets. And im using hyperglides and have tried all kinds of mousemats.

I hit much better with icemat personally, but it requires for me to be extra calm in my hands , or i will just overshoot , its a very different way of using your mouse .

What finally drove me away from clothpads was that I hated when every time you play with it, it has a slightly different friction. Depending on the humidity or how much grease or other shit there was on the mat. Even if you washed you clothpad, it would start to feel like before the wash, really fast.

I watched this old youtube video of HeatoN and Potti and it was so funny to notice how heaton used to struggle with the same thing, like he always wanted to have the same feel and friction to his mouse. So what he would do when he got a new mouse and a pad, he would rub his mouse against his pad furiously to wear them down to get the same feel he was used to.

Never used something like this, why does it need feet? So it doesn't slide?

Is it possible to break it by putting something heavy on top, or pressing it hard in the middle?

The feet keep it steadily in place. It will not break if you press it really hard or place something heavy on it. It's actually very sturdy.

The sound that it makes when you move your mouse on it depends on the mouse feet. Typically most mice now have 100% teflon feet and the the sound that comes out of those is very mild. Some produce hardly any sound at all.

Happy to say the pad arrived in 1 piece after about a week. It's well protected in its packaging. Currently on a g100s and no problems with tracking. Obviously feels much different coming from a soft cloth pad, but you get used to it fast. It makes for a nice souvenir even if you don't play that much anymore.

No complaints from me, delivered as promised.

Pretty much the same from me, took a bit longer to ship but its in one piece. I use it with a Zowie FK1 and it works good after i adjusted the lod.

Glad to hear everything went well with the shipping, not that I had any fears about it.

I also was a clothpad user for several years and moving to this, there's definitely a big learning curve. You gotta learn to keep your hand mouse steady when aiming. Especially small adjust's in aim are hard to adapt to, for example when trying to aim to an object that's very far away.

Also in general it's just a very different feel moving a mouse on this vs. a soft clothpad. I remember one big issue that I hated with cloth was when I was LGing in a tough spot, I would often put more pressure to the mouse (unconsciously), making it dig a bit deeper to the cloth thus increasing friction. That simply can't happen with this.

Mine arrived without any damage and is working great. I can't wait for a bigger version as this is far better than any cloth pad I've used. Only issue is that you need to frequently clean it because any dirt trapped between the mouse and pad makes some pretty horrible noise. Either way I'm impressed!

hehe , yes glasspads needs to be cleaned often , just brush it off with your arm quickly and your done.

Right. This definitely requires a lot of maintenance. I believe I included some instructions with it. Always wipe it with a static wipe before playing and keep it clean.

Also, like any hard pad, it will wear down your mouse feet faster than a clothpad. So anytime you feel like the glide isn't quite what it used to be, get some hyperglidez or teflon tape.

You can always order one from a local glass/frame shop. What you are looking for is acid etched glass.

Can't believe you got a piece of acid etched glass for 3€, that's insane. That's a lot less than what I'm getting them with. Not to mention that here they wouldn't even sell to individual persons, only to companies.

Well price depends on location and glass attributes.
In Germany there are some massive restrictions to protect the environment, that is why etched glass is mostly produced in countries with more loose restrictions and then gets imported.
Price range here for 50x40cm^2 was between 20-50€ depending on shop, color and thickness.
But when you live next to the place where they etch it, I assume 3€ is possible, especially considering 1€ has different buying magnitudes across the countries and mazedonia uses Denar.

Edit: I was curious and checked again, now it is more like 30-60€, while 6mm thick 50x40cm^2 in dark grey still is the most expensive.

Well, not to draw a wrong picture, those prices are for the piece of glass only, overall with all the further processing I ended up paying more than 60€, which is way higher than the price for a Frostpad.
Also it should be taken into consideration, that the Frostpad is cheaper than the Icemat was.

I usually buy regular glass from there for my poster frames. The edge polishing was extra 1€ actually :)
Obviously there are bigger companies in the area that only sell in bulk / square meters for even lower prices.

I remember an old thread on the overclock forums where they were ordering some brand of kitchen cutting boards as a replacement for icemat and overall spending up to 100$ for a piece of glass :D

The XL is right around the corner, I'll announce it here as soon as it's available. The logo is a must have, I'm afraid.

The XL is now available. There are also two more colors to choose from, white and blue.

Right now, for the XL, there are only white one's, but probably at the end of next week there will also be blue and black ones.

For the original Frostpad all colors are available right now.

After some testing with the white Frostpad, it seems that some sensors can't handle a super fast swipe across it. It's still very playable, though. For example WMO and the economy version of Logitech G Pro both performed 100% on it, while the Abyssus 2014 in the picture had problems with fast swipes. So just a word of warning.

Edit: Zowie FK1 does not work on the white Frostpad.

Like I said before, increasing the size would compromise the safety during shipping process and increasing the size even with 1cm would raise the total weight over 1kg increasing the shipping costs by like 50%.

Also just take my word for it, having a mousepad made from glass over this size would make things like washing it or taking it to a gaming event super impractical because you're much more likely to bump it into shit.

I am not quite sure if this is his fake account and he tries to get one for free, but to be honest, a positive review on media with large followership could massively increase sales.
Also RJN is a mouse fanatic and has a lot of them, so he might be able to test some compatibilities for you.

Overshooting happens when you come from a higher friction clothpad and have to adapt to the faster and smoother glide of a glasspad. But after a hour it stops, because then you get used to the tracking, which is far more consistent in attributes and offers a surgical precision.

I don't know the default way, I write "[img1] blabla [img2]" in a post, then click on edit, upload first [img1].jpg as place image and accept, then the post shows that image awaits approval and I click again on edit to do the same for [img2].jpg.

Yeah it seems like you have to first make a post and then edit it to upload an image. But when I made post #39 I remember having the upload image thingy right then and there without having to edit to have it. Maybe I'm wrong though.

Finally got to do some testing with the blue version.

So..

With Zowie FK1 it was really weird. It would track perfectly for like a few seconds, then stop tracking all together and just keep repeating this. So definitely with the Zowie mice, black is the only option.

Abyssus 2014 had the same fast swipe problem that it had with the white version. Black is the only option for this mouse also.

WMO, Logitech G102 (the cheaper version of g pro) worked perfectly like with all the other colors. Also surprisingly, the Steelseries Rival 100 worked really well with the blue version, yet it has small stutter problem with the black one. How that is a thing I dont understand.

I would really appreciate if people here who have bought a Frostpad would share their compatibility findings.

Got the XL white today. Out of the mice not in the list, my over decade old MX518 tracks perfectly on it but I doubt anyone uses that anymore.
As a 70cm/360 guy in Quake, I had the same issue with Zowie mouse (ZA13) not tracking well with fast swipes though and it was even worse on Revel (both track fine on white Shidenkai).
I'm just an anonymous lurker though so don't take my word for it necessarily.

Lovely pad by the way. More durable and faster than Shidenkai is all I ever wanted from a mousepad. Makes you wonder why no one else bothered to continue the icemat legacy until now when the material is easily available.

Thanks for the input. Did your ZA13 really track on it? My FK1 did no tracking on it what so ever. I guess yours is some older model maybe? Or do zowie mice have some sensor differences?

I have the first revision of the mouse with white logo and wheel before they merged with BenQ and made their mice ugly. All of them have 3310 sensor though excluding the old Mico so there shouldn't be any real differences between different versions.
Have you tried changing the LOD? All Zowie mice have three LOD settings; Low (default), medium and high and I have it set on high actually since I'm using hyperglides with it and it's tracking just fine except I can't really turn fast perfectly with it.

Currently using WMO on the pad and it has no real tracking issues with the surface.
Out of the four I have, the only mouse I can't use on it is Nixeus Revel since swiping fast feels rather comical on that one. Can't even do 180s with it in-game, it's a real struggle.

I think rounded edges would make this a better product. Less chance to break/crack and more healthy on the wrists long term.

All the edges have been slanted. When you move your hand on it you hardly even feel the edge.

I received my Frostpad not long ago. I agree with Alborz. The rounded edges and corners of my Steelseries I-2 are nicer than the slanted ones of the Frostpad. Especially the corners of the Frostpad are too pointy/sharp.

Must be a finnish thing making icemats.. I made 2 custom icemats for myself 2 years back 50x45cm because the small size of the icemat annoyed the crap out of me. It was black with a gauntlet humiliation logo in the bottom right, I think I even uploaded it here..

If you make it 50x45 and choose to have it as thin you're literally begging for it to break. I'm not using it anymore though since I don't game that much. The glass surface requires more upkeep for muscle memory i find... but it's so sweet. It's literally like playing on air if you have good glides

Mind sharing how the 3366 tracks on it and how you feel about the pad in general compared to lets say a QCK heavy, Goliathus control and any other pads you might have used?

Sure, it tracks perfectly 'till now, haven't had it skip once that I can remember. I've used the QCK heavy and goliathus speed - They are a lot bigger, obviously, so it takes some getting used to. Other than that, you can't really compare them because this is glass. It's very smooth and fast (and hard). It obviously reminds me a lot of the icemat but it's not as noisy.
Downside is dirt and sweat, you really have to keep it clean all the time or it'll get inconsistant. They advise using a microfiber cloth and it works really well. Biggest problem is if your palm gets sweaty/dirty, you'll get some inconsistant swiping.

The pad itself feels very solid, the feet are really good, no sharp edged. Quality product.

All in all, I'm very happy with it!

I had a conversation with the postal service the other day and I found out something that's rather strange. Some countries actually disregard any fragile tag's when handling the mail, one of these countries being the US for example.

We are now in the process of creating a shell from aluminum. It's build so that the edges take all the weight when something is placed on the package. Downside to this is that the shipping expenses increase, and the shell is gonna cost like a few euros too.

If there's anyone else here who got a broken Frostpad, I'm willing to sell another for -50% but you gotta pay for the shipping. I mean, it's i guess partly my fault for not knowing the thing about how some countries handle fragile mail. I dont know how I was supposed to make that assumption but anyway.

I have not shipped "incorrectly" nor have I admitted to anything like that. I stated that I did not know how some countries handle fragile tagged mail. This does not make it "incorrectly" shipped. What would define as correct in this case is what is stated at www.frostpad.com for everyone to read. That is that the pad itself is protected with styrofoam and has fragile sticker on it. Anyone who buys from me is expecting that, and that is also how they get their purchase. Yes, the implication of having a fragile-tag on the package in this case, may or may not have given a partly false sense of safety for the shipping. It is still left for the customer to determine whether or not they want to risk ordering a piece of glass from halfway across the globe with the terms on the website.

Please think before you write next time.

About cleaning the Frostpad for eveyone who bought one:

I now recommend NOT putting it under running water or submerging it in water because water might get slightly in between the paint and the vinyl.

So just use a damp rag to wipe the surface when cleaning.

I suggest you put this in a mail because I don't think everyone reads this who has bought one ;-)

In my experience the best way is to use window cleaner and glass fibre cloth. Will be extremely slippery and nice

So I just received my Frostpad 12 days after shipping confirmation. Excellent packaging, actually took me a while to free the pad from all the tape and aluminum, the glide feels amazing as well. It's almost like moving the mouse in air.
You can add that the Roccat Lua works fine on the black version. Also, as a nice side effect, it reduces its ridiculous LOD :)

That's the first I've heard of that with the G Pro, or any other 3366 sensor. I would suggest trying to clean the sensor area, maybe blow some air in there first. If getting it clean doesn't help you might actually have a partly defective sensor.

I have exactly the same setup but no problems whatsoever. Default feet.

hmm. the thing is, i already had changed my mousefeet to hyperglides when i got the frostpad, so i never tested it with stock g pro feet.

I'm sure the sensor is clean and i've cleaned the frostpad too.

I have no problems with the G403(same sensor) and the black frostpad either(unless i mess up the surface calibration, where it would stop tracking at higher speed then).

anyone know where to buy a similar mouse pad that is bigger than 35cm? I was thinking 40cm minimum is kinda required for low sense, 35 is getting a bit small?

If you want one, I think the general consensus is that you'll have to make it yourself.

yes , a plastic pad is very grainy compared to this , but this is a little slower then a plastic pad , but still very fast .

so i finally received this & a few days later i spilled orange fanta all over the bottom of it (after a long history of never spilling any drink on my desk), and now some of the bottom is peeling off. Is there a recommended way to replace the bottom part if it comes off?

btw this mousepad is really great, switched from artisan shiden/shidenkai and i can move my mouse just as fast but its much easier to stop

Some component of the soda is causing something to the glue of the vinyl if it's peeling off. That is not something that happens if you expose it to just water as the glue is very tough.

It's probably only slightly peeled from the edge? Maybe you can try to glue it back on there. Do not try to replace the vinyl or anything like that. It's in there very tightly and trying to rip it off would probably take some of the paint with it.

Could be placebo or maybe it's just because my aim isn't how it used to be but this mousepad picks up a lot of dust moreso than my old icemat and it ruins the smooth tracking.

Put some alcohol and wiped it and pad feels way better now. Still unsure if it tracks exactly like the icemat though. Too bad my old icemat broke to compare.

Ok the pad tracks well like the icemat but it also picks up dust a lot easier. Also there are parts where it always feels like there is dust, no matter how much i wipe it and i think it may be imperfections in the glass.

Received my XL black yesterday, the aluminium packaging helped a lot, there were dents all over when I received it, It's smoother than an icemat to the touch, the grain of etching seems a good bit finer, with the mouse it seems to translate to similar static friction but a little bit more kinetic friction.

So making small adjustments feels similar, which in my opinion was the best thing about the icemat, but it's also easier to stop mid-flick, definitely the best feeling hard pad I've ever used.

As far as issues, the feet are too hard, they don't grip as well as I'd like, if I put the frostpad on top of a bigger cloth pad it manages to slide around more so than it does on the desk. Oh and I almost slit my wrists with the definitely heavy duty packaging.

Comparing the frostpad to a Maxtill G2-pad, they're similar under the mouse, though the maxtill has more grain to touch, and might be a tad higher friction.



To draw a parallel to a few cloth pads:

Frostpad and Maxtill : Goliathus Control - Low static friction, easy to stop

Icemat/I-2 : Zowie G-TF - Low static friction, a bit harder to stop than the above

Steelseries SX : Puretrak Talent - Meme worthy low friction, have flung arm off mousepad into things, I don't even understand how Puretrak managed to make a cloth pad that's so hard to stop on.



As far as clothpads, I find rough cloth pads most consistent, they tend to feel closer to hard pads, and wear better than smoother ones, or rather tend to keep most their characteristics after wearing down and cleaning, most likely because the mouse is always in contact to a smaller surface area.

I really like mine, the smoothnes of the pad is unparalleled to anything I've come across so far, though I've only been playing on plastic hard pads before. I think my LG improvred some, atleast that's what it feels like. The friction when initiating mouse movement is lower than on my old Func pad thus making microadjustments easier, though I will need a lot of time to get the rail working again, flickrailer, it's very different to flickrail on the Frostpad compared to the Func pad most likely due to the lower initial friction. Maybe I'll have to learn to aim all over again :-( Too old for this shit :-P

I genuinely would like to get my hands on a large Icemat/Frostpad.

You can generally get them made in your home town/country.

I made one last year for about £20 from a local glass door manufacturer - it was about 95% as close to the original icemat.

the only problem with them is, if you're playing for a few hours there might be a slight residue build up that you have to clean, which isn't too bad but just something you need to keep on top of.

I read one guy's 'journey' in having made an Icemat. He ended up going to like five different places. They all made glass pads that didn't glide well. He ended up spending a lot of money, only to return to his QCK or whatever.

Would much prefer to buy an end product.

What is the packaging like? For reference the Frostpad came in an aluminium shell that helped protect it.

Also do you have a list of sensors/mice and how well they perform on your mousepads? On the Frostpad website it listed different mice and their performance on different colours. I'm particularly interested in knowing how well Microsoft Intellimouse 3.0 and Microsoft WMO perform on ICY pads.
