Invitational only? Its like 300km away from me - 2,5 hours to drive. I could attend + pick ant3stor since hes probably best 1v1 player in Slo who could try his best against best players. He is probably better than hal and rzd. And yeah, RZD? Invited? I know him from QL he was an avarage player, not even close to Hal lvl, and mistake on website AW3K instead of av3k.

Will be there, the event is part of the biggest italian comics and games convention which I have attended for many years, will try to get some nice pictures and maybe videos.

Organization for this kind of thing has always been a problem because being part of a much larger convention makes it hard to get in touch with organizers, but if anyone has any questions i'll do my best to find out the answer.

Average. Some people pretend he's the best somehow, but we have yet to see him in action, and most likely he'll end like Rapha, stearolled by randos.
Game's too chaotic and aim based for an old quake pro to make the difference. And Cypher based most of his game on armors, controls, rotations, positioning.

He also had exceptional raw combat skills and good aim, but i don't think they'll translate as well in quake champions. At least, they didn't fro other pros like Rapha, so it's likely they won't for him, either.

In the current "meta" it's indeed kind of blurry, as he just started playing Anarki (he initially said that he would never play him, but since the last updates he finally had to start I guess), but during the beginning of the beta he surely was one of the very best during online play. But the game has changed quite a bit since then, so we'll see. Rapha didn't do so badly in my opinion. He beat Raisy who is one of the very best at the moment. Only lost to Noctis whose rockets were on fire in that match.

Noctis was one of the few people who on a match to match basis used to threaten Rapha, would ultimately lose, but put on a show.

Given the nature of the game it's not too surprising.

Noctis doesn't describe himself as a dueler, but he's very capable... During the QL Lans he's attended, he's beaten players such as Spart1e, Fazz, Cooller, Czm, K1llsen or Dahang.

And yeah beating Raisy was of course good since he was the strongest player at DreamHack Denver.

QC is not Quake, so I can't see the relevance of those circumstances hence I was saying ridiculous to some of your lines.

In a proper Quake game (for example QL, just to name the latest), rapha beating Raisy ez is de facto standard and losing to noctis should be considered serious underperformance from him.

I don't see how what I said was ridiculous since I did specify that Raisy was one of the best "at the moment"... which makes it pretty clear that I'm talking about losing to Raisy in Quake Champions, not at any point in time in the past 20 years.

When did I ever say that it will be big again? Quake will NEVER be big again, period.

That doesn't mean I shouldn't try to get more people back to an actual, working and truly competitive Quake game.

QL will never be big again, period. QC got atleast a chance to gather a community again, the thing I miss the most in Quake. Keep on trying though if you feel it will make a difference.

People with head in the sand are the ones, who still think that QC will be a big success, it will change for the better in a grandiose way and still defending this crap and id (The developers with SO MUCH care towards their communities, right?) left and right, even if it's 103% obvious how broken it is from concept to actual technicalities.

QC doesn't have to be a big success, if it just reaches QL's peak numbers under 2010-2012 era it will be far enough for it to stand on its own, and with the f2p concept which hasn't even been implemented yet I believe there is a good chance to achieve this. Btw during every quake that has been released there has always been sceptical people rejecting the "changes", but here we are 21 years later still playing Quake and I hope this will be the case for another 21 years and on. It's not that hard to grasp, but QL is not the answer.

I'm around since '96 and never rejected a new Quake, not even once until 2017.

I'm not trying to advocate that QC is perfect, right now it's a pretty buggy mess that all are aware of and many things are at this point set in stone and one have to simply get used to the concept, but at the other hand the game is very fun and challenging, and in its whole it feels like quake while playing despite its flaws. To argue wether it's worthy to be a successor to quake each have to ask themself what makes "quake" special for you and how does the new game deliver these criteria. For me it's the speed and the challenge I always loved about quake, and the possibility to be creative and feeling free with the combination of movement and weapon maneuvers. QC delivers this for me and I am having fun playing it. Still I understand that it is easy to get frustrated at how some things are handled and implemented and I have had my bonerkiller moments as well. The biggest issues I am experiencing right now are the godawful cosmetics and design they went with, from characters to maps and most standard weapons - it's not pretty in my eyes, some abilities are just ridiculous and shouldn't affect the gameplay as much as it currently do, and of course the over all visuals and lack of customization. The lags, stutters, hitboxes and netcode etc. I have faith in that they will fix and it will be an even better experience.

You are trying to win this debate based on how long you have been around even though you are masking it as accepting all previous quake titles, but this doesn't give you any kudos or make your point any more valid. If it makes you feel better I'm not new to the franchise myself, I played Q3 against bots from the year 2000 until QL was released. One Quake I never liked was quake 4, for me that game was only quake in its name, but I only played it singleplayer. The same thing with Quake Wars.

I guess we both will see how this pans out, it could turn into a total failure as well but I will atleast enjoy it while it lasts. After that if the QL community is as stale as it is in this state I probably will move on with either Diabotical which I look forward to, or another game such as reflex or something. Enjoy it while it lasts. :)

They need - to start with - to get rid of every bug. The game needs to feel smooth and fair, because if the netcode is shit the player will be punished 2x.

The game is hard and if you are lagging too... well, that's gonna make people fly away from it.

You say that any game in which the players who dominated QL do not dominate anymore is not a Quake game. This notion is ridiculous. Rapha might very well lose consistently to both Raisy and Noctis in QW, Q2, cpm or Q4. Does this mean that these games are not proper quake games?

Like, the differences between these titles are big enough that you can be the best in the world in one but deliver only mediocre performance in another. There's no good reason to put Q3/QL on a pedestal.

Other than it has the most balanced and fair gameplay out of all of those, with the most extensive tournament background. It even has DeFRaG, which is a wonder in itself.

We have seen him practice, though, and he struggled and got beat by players that in quake live wouldn't have even seen him before dying.

Different games, different champions. Or does people here really think the Q3/QL duelers have to be the best in every game?

The best Q3/QL duelers weren't the best in Q4, PK, OW, CS, SM and QC. What those games share in common is I just listed all the other games that were played by the OSP Q3/QL duelers, and in all of them they didn't succeed as much as they did in Q3/QL. Others names won, from different backgrounds (mods, games, playstyles).

No one would list cypher as the top5 in Q4, or top15 in QC, or top500 in OW, or top5000 in CS. What all those share in common is in all of them cypher tried to become pro. He only was successful in Q3/QL.

And I don't say that to bash anybody. It's just that it's 2017 and some people here still think it's 1999. There's more games than Quake 3, different gameplays than OSP and Q4, and so different champions. Or does somebody here really believe cypher could stand a chance against Voo on CPM? No wonder Voo is so good at this CPM playstyle heavy game and cypher is not as good as him.

Cypher hasn't won an event of anything since more than three years ago (yep that long already), and in his pro career his only major tournament wins were in Q3 and QL OSP duel (practically the same game).

And I don't say this to only be an asshole. Thing is I'd rather see more rounded players getting that level of praise rather than a one game wonder, like winz (world champion in lots of games, OW included and multiple times. Actually right now he's playing in the World Cup), or rapha (best QL player and most Quakecon wins, world champion in QC's Sacrifice and #2 in NA's OW), or cooller (Q3, Q4 and OW world champion), or even fatality (Q3 and PK world champion - winning three times as much than cypher while receiving 1/10 of his praise).

He's really good. Just saying there are better players than cypher, like winz, rapha, cooller and fatality.

It's not a surprise he isn't winning in QC, because cypher only won stuff in Q3/QL (same game different name) and nothing else. Change the game and cypher deflates.

He isn't near as good in other games compared to Q3/QL, but he's really far from being a player you can criticize on this... For instance you say that no one would ever list Cypher as a top 5 Q4 player, but that's up to debate...

His first somewhat big LAN was near the beginning of the game when Cooller was the best Q4 player. He beat him to win the $1,000 prize.

He couldn't play in the early big LANs because travel was difficult for him, but in the major LANs he played, he was doing very well :
- ESWC : 2nd
- QuakeCon : 5th
- WSVG Invitational : 5th-8th
- Insomnia 30 : 5th
- WSVG Louisville : 3rd
- WSVG Dallas : 2nd
- WSVG Toronto : 5th
- Insomnia 32 : 3rd

As for Overwatch he did place as a top 6 European team in the first huge tournament of the game. Then his team disbanded, but for the little he played, not so bad I would say.

And in Quake Champion, he's only played 2 LANs so far, the moscow one where he placed 2nd (insanely close match), and this invitational where for like a frag or two more he was moving out of a very tough group. Let's wait till DHW to see how "bad" he really is... But for me he's definitely a player that's talented across many games for sure.

I'm just saying that there are other players that had success in Q3, QL and other games too. Therefore, they are better players than cypher. Everybody here just creams themselves when thinking of cypher, failing to realize winz is like 3 times more successful than cypher. Nobody talks about winz. Are you sure? Winz was a Quake duel (Q4), TDM (QL) and CTF (QL) world champion, and 3rd/4th place in Sacrifice (QC).

Winz was easily in the very most dominating Quake TDM, Quake CTF, SM and OW teams ever. Being in the very most dominating teams across 4 games is better than being among one of the best in only one game (cypher in Q3/QL).

And again, my point is to highlight more players than what usually people praise here. Cypher is praised here like the best dueler of all time, and while he's a fascinating player to watch when you do praise someone that heavily you tend to forget about the achievements of other people. Some of them are even better players than him.

For example, rapha won more titles and also more important titles in QL than cypher. Rapha is the one that dominated QL, not cypher, but rapha doesn't get even half the praise that cypher gets, just because he isn't as flashy. Or say zero4, who was the actual guy that dominated Q3 (wasn't cypher nor rapha nor cooller), and nobody talks about him. Or say tox, who is the best earning Quake player of all time, and nobody has mentioned him in the discussion. There you have already three players with more Quake achievements than cypher, and when you factor in other games there's at least two other Quakers that have had more achievements (winz and fatality -- that nobody mentions here).

Yeah, if we look at facts I'm quite sure. OK, let's go into specifics.

Firstly, "world champion" is a title that can only be used in games or sports that have one most prominent tournament everyone considers as an unquestionable World Championship. This wasn't true in Quake scene most of the time. Otherwise you will have funny stuff like Fatality being a "12 times world champion". There were some tournaments which we can probably call "major". Winz won 1 major in the year 2006. Other majors of that year (and majority of tournaments overall) were won by Toxjq. If someone made world player ranking of Quake 4 era with points for each tournament placing, Toxjq would be the first with a large margin, Cooller/Avek/Stermy/fox/Cypher probably following him. Winz could or could not be in top 8.

Unfortunately, TDM and CTF (almost) never were the primary type of competition in Quake. Winz won some titles and is considered one of the best in team-based Quake, but arguably there are others who won more.

That is if we talk only about Quake. However, winz surely is an excellent all-around FPS player and I wish him all the best in his Overwatch career.

All in all, I don't know where are you getting from that Cypher is praised as the best dueler of all time. I think rapha, tox and cooller get at least as much appreciation here if not more. As for me, I tend to agree with this list of most outstanding Quake players of all time from one of Thorin's videos: Thresh, Fatality, Zero4, Cooller, Toxjq, Cypher, Rapha.

I think both Cypher and Cooller were pretty much one round away from like finishing first of their group (or at the very least advancing), tough losses.

Don't laugh, apparently group A is replayed because of this (without Hal).

Ah, I guess in the rules the match against Hal don't count in the case of the 3-way tie, and they are all at 4 maps won and 2 maps lost. If there is no further way of tiebreaking, I guess you need to replay, but that's a bit excessive ^^

With such a strong group, I'm not suprised Cypher didn't make it through. This was his first international LAN in QC and afaik he has barely played in any online competitions too.

He's playing nice looking quake and picks different champs, he's fresh to spec, I hope he will be succesful at DHW.

All those players are sponsored by playing Quake. How can they retire when its not just a hobby but their job?

You will have to ask each of the players I mentioned why they temporarily retired but I thought you would have more insight than me regarding this but as I see it there are 2 factors. The first one is the last couple years the prizepool and cups has not been that great for Quake which is pretty much gambling for a living, sponsors lose interest if there is no gain in the game as well. The second and just as likely is as it is with every job, sometimes you just gotta move on and try something new, most of the normal jobs gets tiresome and repetitive and then it's natural to do something else.
