Then it depends on your electricity prices, on mining difficulty (might make mining unprofitable) and obviously on the price of the coin. Which is the big issue - it's impossible to predict where such a volatile market will go, and doing so with bigger investments is risky.

The most lucrative coins are the ones right at their beginning, that have something unique to offer. Obviously theres more risk with them, but theres also a lot more reward.

I mean for example, ethereum used to be cheap as chips, if you had bought 1000 when it was $1, it'd be worth about $360k now.

Say litecoin reaches a 10 billion market cap (its 2.5 atm), divide that by the coins in circulation:
10,000,000,000 / 51,591,532 = $193 per coin

So if you spend $1000 on ltc, you could make $2860 profit. IF it reaches 10b market cap. Which who knows if it will (but it is a possibility in the long term, although short term is less predictable, everything could crash tomorrow...). So its kind of meh, you could hold out for a 50b cap and get about $20k, maybe thats the best you could hope for. But the world market cap is trillions so, maybe if crypto takes hold even more, thats not such a pie in the sky number. But its probably a long way off if that does happen.

You don't have to have a coin reach ethereum levels to make money, if you invest in a coin early on enough, even if it only goes up to being worth $5 a coin, if you bought them at $0.01 then you still make 500x. So put in $500 and will be worth $250k. But you've just got to do your research to find the up and coming ones. What do people want, and how does the coin fulfil that need, and does it have the team behind it that can see it through. Also don't invest more than you're prepared to lose, since that could happen easily, especially with the newer coins.

Its probably not a bad one to invest in. Its relatively safe compared to others.

They all have the risk of crashing. So in a way you don't need to worry about that when choosing a coin. But you have to be aware it can happen, you can lose 90% of your money if you're unlucky, but thats just how it is (but, you can always just leave it and see how it goes in the future, you don't lose your coins, unless something really catastrophic happens, or if you aren't careful and leave all the coins on an exchange that gets hacked).

What to look at is how much you can expect to times your money by, and how secure your investment is.

So litecoin is very secure when compared to other coins (its supported by marketing and good dev team), but it has a lower multiplier on your investment.

So in the end it just comes down to what you want to do.
- Safe way: If litecoin is worth $50 and ends up being worth $1000 a coin then you've 20x your investment. You can quite safely leave your money in there for a long time and it'll go up and down, but you shouldn't ever lose it.
- Riskier way: If some up and coming coin is worth $0.01 and ends up being worth $5 then you've 500x your investment. The risk is these coins can fail and end up being worth $0.00001 and then die, if you don't keep an eye on them.

(those multipliers are both pretty optimistic but just to illustrate the point).

So the best thing to do, is do both. Just put less money into the riskier ones.

Btw, usually by the time a coin is on the bittrex exchange, its probably too late, the up and coming coins are usually on the smaller exchanges, and you have to figure out if they're worth it or not. When they increase in popularity, they end up being picked up by the bigger exchanges and thats when they can really start to increase in value.

Oh and you also have some of the "mid risk" ones like Stratis, Waves, Ethereum Classic, Steem, Bitshares etc. Its fairly likely one of those could go up 5-10x...

But this is all assuming there isn't a crash and things continue as they are!

The FBI has made it very clear that they are watching Bitcoin very closely, and they are getting better and better at finding the true identities of the people who use Bitcoin for illegal activity. They are fully aware that not everyone who uses Bitcoin is a criminal. In fact, they have a public dossier of their educational materials given to law enforcement to help them understand what it is. There are plenty of ways for hackers to hide their identity, but for the casual user, they are not getting any added expectation of privacy from Bitcoin. At this point in time, the only way to truly have an anonymous and untraceable financial transaction is with cold, hard cash.

Personally in my opinion i think it isn't purely a scam, it didn't originate with that purpose; but practically, there actually is no difference between crypto coins and the classic Ponzi scheme. So i see why someone would see it as only a trap and a bubble ready to pop. As already said, on top of the Ponzi basics there are various technical issues without easy fix.

BTC has been around since 2009. So far across that time horizon, you would only be ahead with the S&P500 against BTC if you joined the party in May 2017. Quite the criterion for 'scam' you have. I'm no expert, but you can think of it as electronic gold.

It is similar in that there can only be a finite supply of it, and people "mine" it using computing power. The amount of computation needed is modulated to control the rate at which new coin is discovered. Eventually it will all be mined, just like gold.

The benefit of that is the banks can't just print more of it, which devalues normal currency like a hidden tax on everyone who holds it. The coin itself gets its value the same way everything else does: supply and demand. The more it is useful for actual trade and the more it is trusted, the more valuable it gets.

I think it would be safe to say governments don't like it, so I'd wanna check your local laws regarding it. I mean here in Australia, some guy pretended to be the creator of bitcoin and had his house and work raided by the federal police on the same day---even though I don't actually think the creator did anything illegal.

The technology can be thought of as a distributed ledger. The ledger keeps track of who has what in their account, but that ledger is not stored on a single computer. Processing transactions on the ledger requires a lot of computing power by design, and miners provide that power in exchange for being rewarded coins and transaction fees when they successfully process a transaction (being the first to process a transaction requires a bit of luck, and the more horsepower you've got, the more likely it will be you).

That's a good summary. I would only add that the account balances are encrypted so despite it being a distributed ledger, account balances are not known.

And one slight clarification - it's governments that create money and not banks. Through a complex process involving banks but it's ultimately governments.

Well, like I was saying, anything can have value if there is a demand for it and limited supply---even a number in a computer, which is pretty much what most normal money is anyway.

How did they get a piece of paper to be worth anything? It's what it signifies and what it can get you. If everyone agrees it is worth something, then it is. They want it because they have trust that they'll be able to exchange it later for something they want.

How did they create the demand in the first place? I'd say there must have been some people who had belief in the potential of it to be worth more, so the currency attracts a lot of speculators to begin with. A lot of nerds playing around with it for fun, no doubt. I reckon that is what creates the initial value. At that point, you can only get it by mining or buying it. When someone buys it, the seller is obviously getting something of value in exchange. Others would see people making some money this way and join in.

The more people start exchanging it for goods and services, the more its value becomes more than just speculative.

There's a limited supply because the system controls the difficulty of the number puzzles the miners are solving so that the rate that new coin is "discovered" meets a target, and that target rate reduces over time until it is zero, at which point all the coins are mined. In the case of bitcoin, there's never supposed to be more than 21 million bitcoins in existence.

Thing is with bitcoin is that its slow and expensive to send it. So its not very useful as an actual currency. There are better coins, like litecoin and I think bitcoin cash is better too, also ethereum. They all have room to grow in value as well.

If you buy bitcoin, and say it manages to get up to $50k, you've only 3x your money, but litecoin could go from $300 to $5000 which would be 16x. Then again it might all just crash and go to nothing, but thats always the risk with these things. But the general rule, if you want to make money, is go for the up and comers, rather than the ones that are already there.

You could wait for a crash, if it happens. But when do you buy? Because bitcoin might go down to $5k, and you think, "it won't go lower", so you buy some, but then you could end up watching it go all the way down to $100. So buying in a crash can be uncertain too.

In the end, you just have to accept its a gamble, and no one really knows whats going to happen tomorrow, or in a years time.

You need to sit on the coins and just invest as much as what you're comfortable with. Bitcoin gives you a platform to then invest in other coins, it's not rocket science, it's just not one of those "Gonna drop 1k and make 50k" kinds of investments. Online marketers are the ones killing crypto, they are literally just investing in promoting people to join X ICO and that's it, with no real knowledge of it.

From a longevity point of view, crypto currency has been been around for decades, banks and governments are getting scared at the fact that if things keep pressing forward you'll have a decentralised monetary system which in a nutshell will give people back the power to do whatever they want with their finances. It's a long shot, long term but it's better than waiting for the next market crash that's gonna ruin everyone.

And several months on there's been a huge swing in fortunes and he's down to £1500 now, I saw it as high as £4800 on his phone, he says its been as high as 5.5k from putting 3k in (was 4k when i made that post- so shows how much its gone down) That was spread across about 8 coins, with most of it in BC.

So basically my analysis was spot on as I doubt its going to recover.

I'm spooked by the bitcoin crazy. When you can sell fake coins on the streets and earn a million, when most of the investors aren't aware of the differences in how much less BTC markets are regulated and why regular financial markets were regulated in ways BTC currently isn't, when most of them don't know much of anything about programming and cryptography and finance and investment generally... This bitcoin thing becomes way too memey for my liking.

Think about if you know what you're investing in. And remember that even if blockchain technology will remain, any and possibly all current cyrptocurrencies currently on the market might fail. I don't think a person should invest any more than say 20% of their portfolio into assets as risky as this. I see fellow nerds online ignore this a lot, and it really worries me.

funny thing a bitcoin transaction currently costs 25 $ or something ... so you cant really use it as a payment system for private consumer items ... the costs are just too high ... and they always said the advantage of cryptocoins is that a 3rd company making money from the transaction is not part of the transaction ... and now you have 25 $ costs ... still bitcoin prize doesnt suffer ... so what is this all about ... they always say it is so "useful" and that is why it is worth something but I dont see anything it can be used for yet ... there are also a lot of electronics in the garbage bin that can run windows 7 succesfully, a lot of functioning monitors in the garbage bin ... you know the writer of the game of throne books wrote his book in wordperfect on a dos system from the 90s ... so much useful stuff that is thrown away and noone cares about ...

it is made by some company who owns all the coins from the beginning and sells them and still owns most of them, so you cant mine any coin yourself unlike the other cryptocurrencies and it is also centralized and not really a distributed system like bitcoin ... cryptocurrencies are said to be so great because they are distributed and cant be hacked, but this is centralized ... still people going for it and there is a hype for this currency right now ... or if you look at dash, 2 million coins were mined in the 1st two days, represents about 20 % of the total amount that will ever be mined .... so the creators got themselves rich, pretty visible it is a money making scheme for the creators, still a very succesful currency it is at 1000 $ or something per coin, so the creators instamined 2 billion $ in the first 2 days ... still people buying ... I think most people don't know what they are doing it is just a hype about the "hope" (and it is just that, hope, nothing else) about cryptocurrencies leading to a "revolution"
