Has a shitload of quality of life improvements and a lot of new content such as new castle.

tetris or command & conquer. Maybe diablo if you like hack & slay but diablo becomes much more fun in multiplayer.

Speaking of C&C... isn't it funny how that genre completely disappeared?

I remember when there was a new C&C [really a "Dune"] clone being released on a weekly basis.

it didnt completely disappear but the hype is gone. I guess developers realized starcraft set the bar too high and they cant compete with a cheap clone

Starcraft 2 is inferior in all the aspects that matter to Starcraft 1, and most rtses came out well after Starcraft 1.

What killed the genre are mobas, Lol and Dota.

They're like rts, but without all the resources and building managements.

So obviously kids lapped it up and now rts have become "too difficult and hard work". Kinda like the death of arena fps compared to simpler fpses.

Rts players are brothers in decadence and oblivion with us arena fps players.

EA ruined the franchise.

Why don't you just upgrade your 2009 laptop to a 2018 laptop?

I am in a similar position, and I've been spending time with the Age Of Empires games.

not very old (= this millenia), but here's a few free singleplayer platformers, with hundreds of hours of content/replayability, which also don't need a good mouse (mostly keyboard controlled):
N (check out N++, though that isn't free and might not run as well on your old system. The original one should run without issues tho)

don't wanna shill, but there's a pretty good sale on gog right now if you're into all that baldur's gate, icewind dale etc. goodness. But also Rollercoaster tycoon, vampire:the masquerade, system shock, deus ex, thief, all for dirt cheap and made to run on modern systems i.e. modern Windows, widescreen etc. (I think)

I didn't play it too much but providing the dwarves with their share of ale was fun, so I second Dwarf Fortress. Also had tons of good times playing CnC, which I assume most here have.

Those are two truly epic RPG-s that you may have not yet played.

I like Reunion very much, but it was overlooked at the time, kind of underground. Did you know that it was made by a small group of young, hard-working Hungarians? They later went on to create Imperium Galactica and its sequels.
They were featured in a recent documentary which covers the Hungarian software development scene surrounding the Soviet era of the 80's, early 90's. It is a great watch that I recommend, you may find it very interesting, especially if you're into old games which you clearly are.

I always thought (not sure where I had this from) that Reunion was made by Yugoslavians. And that the outbreak of the Balkan war is what prevented Reunion II from happening.

Speaking of old classics; why isn't there a Defender of the Crown remake for Android or iOS? Seems such an obvious game to port.

There was actually a Defender of the Crown II, made exclusively for Amiga CD32. I never got to play it.

Often many games that would run on that laptop, you just need to check every week or so.

There is some game at the moment looks like modern syndicate clone by the way.

Since you like rts, you might want to try The protectors. It's a free to play stand alone of Warlords Battlecry 3, maybe not the best rts, but still.

Also your laptop should run well the original Far Cry, that imo holds up very well and is still fun.

There's also the first two max paynes. Maybe you can run Byoshock, too

I doubt that a integrated laptop GPU from 2009 will run Far Cry.

I'm talking about Far Cry. Not Far Cry 7. The game came out early 2004, a laptop with integrated graphics from 2009 should be able to run it easily, setting it up a little.
