Listened to the clip. First impression - oh, there's the classic technology is awesome and is advancing so fast rant. I wish he would improve these, considering how often he's done them. I suppose something has to be this simplistic if you're talking for 3 hours without any preparation, but I regret listening to so much of it, heh.
He's talked about doing this gaming thing multiple times. Was always afraid of getting into it due to getting obsessive with it. Hope he goes through with it this time. Prime opportunity for some quakers to look for a chance to hop on the podcast and talk about Quake :) He's got a bit of a tinge of anti-gamer mentality, jokes about them being lazy and dorky or something. He would have definitely gotten into gaming more in the past if he didn't, since huge swathes of his audience are gamers. With that said, you could definitely tell he considered MOBAs to be alien and foreign during the podcast where he had the CSGO player on, he was more interested in shooters like CSGO, but most interested in Quake. You can see it in this video too. So there's a definite shot if you guys want to talk someone like rapha going on the podcast, he would be the perfect guest. Or just hope Rogan starts streaming quake on twitch. That's the goldmine right there.
Adding to what megaman3 said, Joe's podcast is one of the most popular podcasts in the world and has a massive audience. If you've never watched it, it's definitely worth checking out.
Ooh. I know he played it, but don't know if that's what he planned on playing now. When did he comment about making a LAN and playing it? If he streams it's going to be pretty huge for Quake.
Yea, I heard him say that too about the T1. I know you're just repeating what he said, but want to say that seems kind of asinine to me. Having a T1 line doesn't necessarily mean your latency is improved, it just means more bandwidth. Afaik, Q3 doesn't use that much bandwidth at all. Maybe 5kb/s? (I'm sure Weird or someone else will correct me if I'm wrong about this.)
Maybe T1 lines are more direct pipes to whatever local hub. So possibly he has slightly less latency. I dunno. Eitherway, $10k/mo for video gaming? This guy's priorities were all f'd up.
He's repeated the story at least a couple of times. It's probably true I reckon, not that I know how he used that much bandwidth. As you're right, Q3 doesn't use much at all. Regarding priorities... he's obsessive. Goes into a thing really hard. Talked about doing this with taekwondo, pool.
