Id software can't even make a game by themselves anymore, they always need a partner studio to do the hard work and to unload the blame onto when the game inevitably fails
I've played original rAge few years after the release and I couldn't understand all the negativity around the game. It was a really nice experience for me.
Let's see how the sequel turns out. Bethesda are king of single player games, this should be up there too. Specially since all the liabilities at id offices are working on QC, think this game will be damn good.
Rage had so many technical issues at launch and still has quite a few in the final version. The mega texture tech looked good at long range, but at close range it looked like something from literally the late 90s or early 2000s. There was also horrible texture popup, unless you had a really fast 8 thread CPU (basically intel I7, which very few had back then) or nvidia GPU for cuda acceleration of texture fetching. They released a texture sharpening patch after a while, which helped a bit (bringing close range textures up to ca. 2004 level).
They also managed to mess up the mouse movement in menus in one of the patches so you had to google commands to fix it or the mouse would not register slow movement, which made it really painful to use the in-game build menu, press accept on quests etc. To make matters worse, the lowest sensitivity the game would do in menus is equivalent to 2.0 in Q3, which is quite a bit higher than what I would normally use so one had to set m_pitch and m_yaw in the launch options to get a decent sensitivity, which is something that belongs in a bad console port.
The gameplay itself was decent. The shooting was quite good, but the world , levels and story felt underdeveloped. Kinda like they let the artist go wild, then realized they didn't have enough time/money to finish the game itself so you get levels that are reused a lot with minor changes and a world that feels rather empty. The game kind of feels like it is half-finished.
After the last patch and with setting quite a few console commands through launch options, then I would give the game a 7.5 score, but it was around a 5 or a 6 when it came out.
If it's more like Doom than Rage 1 in terms of gun/gameplay, I'm looking forward to it! Rage had too much useless driving around, somewhat disappointing weapon gameplay, but for sure an interesting world.
But all of these id games (and many more modern games) go into the wrong direction with story telling. Useless unskippable cutscenes with badly animated, bland copy-paste characters. Telling something that you can often just tell from the "trails" that are left in the levels - think voice logs in Dead Space about stuff that you could gather from being observant ("blabla we're opening the body bla bla unusual stuff bla bla ARTHGHGHGHGH"; when you see an op table doctor corpses laying around - why tell me twice?) Or those bland emo tears bullshit in Wolfenstein - unskippable - useless - wanna be Hollywood. Or look at any cut scene from GTA3-GTA5 and look at the char animations. Flailing arms with expressionless faces. You have a budget of xxx millions now for some of these AAA titles. This is still not infinite resources. Use it more wisely.
And don't get me started on those online comments looking for open world play, what a useless filler feature for 90% of games, shitty minigames, shitty "randomly" generated environments with "randomly" generated quests and "randomly" generated enemies. Dear devs, "random" doesn't mean +/- 5% difference. Waste of time and game critics hail the game because it takes 80 hrs to complete at 100%.
Bet this is open world, features multiplayer heavily, looking the same in each area, driving around in this horribly controllabe buggy while getting side quests every time you start a real mission/level/.. bargh
Rage was pretty good except for the weird fov and bad refresh rates, not the greatest game out there but certainly not the worst either. Rage 2 could turn out pretty good if they make the right choices (which will be a miracle considering the modern id software ...)
MadMax and Rage share a very similar setting and environment.
I quite enjoyed madmax. Im not fully into open world, rage I never finished and Farcry 3 i decided is just crap after trying to like it. Madmax on the other hand I actully completed and its an all round pretty good game except a little repetiative.
What is with these CGI trailers tho, no gameplay footage, that hype. I will be sure to grab this once its $7 on steam.
first rage was sometimes lacking a bit in gameplay, but was still very devent overall ... the atmosphere was good and the driving was fun ...
but this rage seems to be a bit more open world orientated, seems a bit more like fallout with less rpg elements
u wanna speedrun or w00t?
dont see the point in speed running an open world game ...
quake 1 still had corridors and complex geometry and linear gameplay ... something else than randomly placed buildings or procedurally generated terrain/buildings .... and smooth (and too easy) gameplay and feel good atmosphere with lengthy unrelated dialogs
Rage was a shooter while mad max was not, so it's hard to compare. Mad max was also repetitive ofc (as being a open world game), but (in my opinion) it was a way better game. Rage was more like a tech demo with good movement and solid weapon mechanics.
i finished rage about 5 times and it still is very impressive game to me artistically as it has lots of unique detailed environments and game-play isn't too boring or repetitive. i am not sure about mad max game, it looks nice but i can't say i would really want to play it.
Mad max is different, you fight/melee mostly not shoot, not my type of game at all, I just try to be objective about it when I compare.
I also finished Rage several times, all on nightmare except the first one, only because the shooting felt good (especially the DLC) . But as a game.... I might just have different expectations when it comes to single player games.
for me it's pretty hard to name any recent sp games that i liked at all, rage is definitely at the top 5 of sp games along with fallout new vegas and q1-q2 and ss2 and maybe a few others i don't remember. when id does games they usually make them right, when they use partners they are not that good , but still playable.
Rage with its awful repetitive gameplay, its locked 60 fps nightmare, its dumb AI, etc, it was anything but a game for me. I shotgun-Ramboed the whole thing, with some speedrun attempt too... shooting was fun but that's it, for example I enjoyed New Order a lot more.
Games like inside, ftl, civ 5, isaac rebirth, brothers tale of two sons, tomb raider, soma, superhot, apotheon, rouge legacy, a way out ... I could name so many good SP games I played in the last few years on PC I could write several pages full with titles and Rage wouldn't be on the list by far.
And that's for SP only, and I prefer multiplayer, not to mention the good games on consoles like mk8, sm-odyssey, or god of war for example…. I don’t know… as I said, I just might have different taste when it comes to SP games. I think of it as reading a book or watching a movie… when it’s over I like to have some good feelings, like it worth the time… with Rage.. I felt nothing; I just had some fun with the shotgun.
Don’t get me wrong, Quake is at my heart, and always will be (not this Unreal abomination what we have now tho), nothing compares to a good Quake match, that is what I love the most when it comes to games.
idk i mostly like the setting of the game like stalker series might not be the most polished game but its great setting and atmosphere really sucked me in, i like the rage wasteland how it feels and looks and that there is a simple rpg style inventory system. i don't like games that are mostly gameplay based, i also like a game that has unique art charms and atmosphere. everyone has their preference i get that. not everyone might like rage as it has some flaws. i am not that into following games in general and i prefer to stick to some big titles from companies like id and valve and blizzard but not every single game is on my radar. i am not expert in games, i mostly play games for their story or setting that i like. like for example i liked playing daikatana in 2011 and most people also think that game is garbage but i really liked its setting and art and how it felt. i am more into art of games and their atmosphere.
I know that feeling. I liked Singularity for example. It's unreal3 engine based, which could be a showstopper on its own. It's repetitive, it's slow, etc, so I can't really explain it, I just liked the atmosphere I guess.
This will obviously have a battle royale mod. Only reason to revive Rage really, since the first game wasn't exactly successful and the Borderlands clone trend died years ago.
they put rage out to quick.
ending sucked.
never released the dlc.
there's tons of doors everywhere that will never open.
I'm always wondering what's behind door #2, and door#3 etc etc etc etc etc etc
Overall i liked it though.
would make a good "rage wars enemy territory" since there's all the clans living about, mutants, towns etc.
Based on this, I thought of giving Rage another chance. And I must say with the right tweaks installed this is a blast to play. Especially with the id5tweaker mod that unlocks to 165FPS .. game is buttersmooth.
Here are my tweaks :
pm_nobob 1
g_fov 110
m_sensitivity 0.5
m_yaw 0.009
m_pitch 0.009
m_menu_sensitivity 0.38
bind p id5Tweaker_ToggleFps
For some reason I had really bad sens in this game, this fixes it for me. Also the fov and nobob (rage has bad motion headbob implemented tbh) make a world of difference.
I also think the game has some GREAT art direction and fun characters. Story is shit though
Anyone trying this, just keep in mind that you will need to toggle to default FPS cap when doing outdoors vehicle combat missions. Track missions seems to be fine.
