Getting caught with your pants down by VAC is as official as it gets.

Add to that his ridicolous excuses and behaviour in the whole charade, his superhuman powers that comes and go (and came outta nowhere) and you have that only russians claims it's all a big misunderstanding.

It's already a miracle that Agent managed to escape all those years, but then again, you have to really be a colossal retard to manage to be caught from VAC in a game like Quake Live. The vast majority of cheats go unnoticed, only the very blatant ones triggers it.

Isn't that usually the opposite though? I remember base dominating in QL online play, always getting top3 in online EU cups and even managing to beat evil. With that he would get at least top4 on LAN, if not win it, right. But then came the LANs... never got out of group stages (top32). Base then dominated in QC at one point, winning euro online cups and always finishing at the top, so top3 of EU again, could win. Then came the LAN... same top32. Cheating online could explain why that's the case: one thing is to underperform once, another is to always underperform.

Anyway, to me at least what made it obvious was the absurd excuses about how he got VAC banned. That was just unbelievable, if not stupid hah. Yeah, someone hacked my Steam account in order to use cheats in Quake. No, they didn't do anything with my credit card associated with the account: they just wanted to cheat in this super niche game. Yeah, that requires going through also hacking the associated email or stealing your phone, but please guys believe me. Yeah, after the VAC ban I didn't tell anyone about it in over a week, and only did so because someone posted it on ESR, but please understand. Yeah, the VAC ban was never lifted, but pleeeease.

Also sombra being allowed there, really? That guy was 100% confirmed cheater. Is QC this dead that they are allowing 4 cheaters in just because without them there wouldn't be enough sign-ups?

I asked about this lan, not other. His side on that - he is too nervous in lan environment. Maybe with Agent and with some encouragement from Polosatiy he has more confidence now. We don't know.

What I do know - you haven't come up with an explanation why he hit like that on this lan. Even better than online. Also I do know that some top quake players are believing that Base is the real deal. Take Polosatiy as an example. He's not at the top now, but still.

About VAC ban - don't forget that some good quake players are computer illiterate. From what I see, Base is even more so. Worse than Base is only Evil with his self-melting ddos dark magic.

Can't you delete your credit card info the moment you finish buying something on steam? That is, force steam to not store that info?

I could have sworn that this is exactly what I've done in the past. But it's been quite some time since I bought things on steam other than using my credit earned from cs:go twitch drop box sales during lan tournaments or rare drops at the end of a match.

sure, there always be a current meta and some champs stronger than others, but its just a matter of their number being increased at least to 5. that would be really good. almost, like, quake-level good.

Personally I wish we would see what happens for 2 more seconds, showing either "victory" or "defeat" depending on who we're spectating (basically what the player sees... I don't know why it's different in spectator mode), and then cut to the podium thingy with the champions.

Cutting straight to the podium you don't always understand how the last frag went.

Desired changes.

Reduce Doom slayer and visor to 125/25 (they are mediums)
Increase galena hit box.
NG is too dominant and remove it from start weapon.
Keel is too spammy with nades in close up, it trivialities combat.

I would personally like to see Doom slayers double jump looked at too. It seems way too powerful for a passive move.

Obviously the punch distance needs looking at too, possibly swap out that move for something less offensive, perhaps instead he can attain temporary protection (like the powerup) or something less retarded than it is now.

They need to bring more characters into the meta. Right now, 150/25 off the spawn for those two is making them no brainers for FFA and 2v2 which are the best modes in the game.

Duel would get more love if you reduced abilities down to one per champ. No abilities option means nothing cos people want to play tourney rules, its an entirely different game without them, just reduce them to 1 per champs, and you can remove that option then, so everyone is on the same page.

Enough BS to show the game off and add some variety, but not enough to ruin the purist orientation of the mode and its fans.

A shit player will lose to a good player using nothing more than a default machine gun.

Yeah but you bump into him, and you can lose an entire stack in a split second. Unlike most abilities whcih you use and it lasts a few seconds the threat of huge damage is always there.

camp around a corner, fire a rocket, mach nades, you'de be surprised how hard it hurts.

Its not a deal breaker, but there's no doubt something better out there awaits such a legendary name.

Same can be said of Ranger (he has actual instagib ability with 20 seconds cooldown) or Nyx (also instagib but harder and longer cooldown) and yet there were no Rangers in the tournament and the only Keel was festiveturtle, while no one else thought it's a good idea.

I think if Keel was so OP, someone from the top 8 would have the idea to use him and get $20000.

You're the guy who's supposedly better than Cooller, why didn't you sign up with the OP champion of your choice and get to the semis?

Most people would agree dire orb is harsh so not the best example,
but at least you get one shot at it, the difference is, KEEL starts on 150/50 so he can stand there and just spam nades at nearly anytime.
ESP if he's stacked.

Being OP does not mean unbeatable.
Only reason people not use him much is cos Visor and doom slayer are more useful.

When their stacks go back to 125/50 and Galena's hitbox is solved, I'm sure Keel will be the next champ people consider as many players are picking now based on the monthly change logs.

I'll agree with pretty much all of that. Someone mentioned a "jump pack malfunction" for doom's passive, when he takes damage it disables his double jump for a time and also he can only use the double when he reaches max height on the first jump.

It's just less "not Quake" than anything we've previously seen from QC.

This is 2v2, as frs (rightly) calls it, a "duel with a mate". Almost as easy to follow and understand as duel [except the stupid decision not to mark enemies in any way, while at the same time making it impossible to know which team's player we're spectating (it's literally as far away from center of the screen as mathematically possible!)]

Unlike QC duel, however, it has much higher frag limit. Frag limit is stupid in its own right (please implement mercylimit if you need stomp-protection), but it's just high enough that we can see some teams invest frags to gain control. Which is what Quake is to me!

So yeah, this looks similar to Quake AND it's better both to play AND to spectate. A first for a QC event. It's a win for us, but really, a defeat for QC, they were so happy with Sacrifice and champ/round-based duel...

Now the only thing missing is making Visor and small champions back to 100% air acceleration, because this slowmo Quake still hurts my brain, it's as if world's best players strafe jumped worse than me, it just doesn't compute. And make Nyx and Anarki even faster (both with a larger hitbox, I can deal with that, just give me speed)

And nerf Galena while at it, because proximity mines are noob (got removed from QL after a while, so...). I'd rather see more Dooms and Keels "in the meta" (what is this language anyways ;))

ow fuck yeah, i agree, ..

having no frag limits tho, would give us more passive plays at the end as it was in QL. Now that the team knows they just need that 1 or 2 kills, even with maybe 5 frag diff, they dive in for the last kills. Not always succeeding and giving us, the fans something to laugh or drool about. But i agree it still should be improved (maybe higher frag limit).

... team recognition was sometimes confusing, knowing who is who, but i liked that the color is static to team color, just maybe add to it (names/tags/logos instead of triangles/hats) in a pleasant, minimalistic way. also ui improvements on teams would be useful. Maybe we are getting that with next update, since they are implementing hp bars.

And also kudos to the production (aside the lags and crashes, wtf guyz, where are your comms? :) for implementing team comms, finaly we get to hear emotions. For example, i never thought rapha is so loud and determined on the comms.

...also can't wait to see other champs like slash, keel, ranger ... entering the frey.

More often than not, when it was 10-12 minutes with a score like 46-40, the bottom team went super passive and played only for powerup, and if that didn't work, went to hiding again.

Without fraglimit, they would be able to invest few frags to get good items, set up for PU, get a streak and come back with a bang. Here it's just impossible when one team passes 40.

So that eliminates entire play style which would otherwise be viable. It just takes something away from the game without giving anything back.

(You can choke just as well without frag limit, there's still time limit for that :))

Clawz is too green and inexperienced.

He doesn't have the strong mentality and the confidence of a veteran, so as long as the momentum is behind him, he's a killer, but as soon as the tides turnes he folds like a lawn chair.

And especially in a team game and 2 vs 2 you need to be reliable and stable, because your partner is always going to lose 2 vs 1.

I think several teams were stronger than clawz's, but they just got wiped out like it happens in this dumb game.

And in the finals, Clawz couldn't handle the tempo swings, the pressure, the pace and folded.

Again, you would never see Clawz in a Quake Live final, either duel or team based.
Yet in quake champions he storms trough people tougher than him with raw mechanical skills alone, and when that doesn't work out, he implodes, ruining the brackets.

Actually, you would. He was super strong in QL, but of course we had active evil in weekly cups, and in QL duel you had guys like Agent who could time 4 items and still win over most of people with better aim.

Item timing in QW/Q3/QL was stupid though. I mean I learned that after a while and played on teams way better than me, just because I could add 25/35 to numbers and remember them. So that was nice... but still stupid :) They change 20/30 (QW) to 25/35 (Q3) in order to make timing impossible... then it turned out it was just another "skill" (more like fake difficulty, really).

So decision to make everything 30 seconds in QC was absolutely objectively good. Unfortunately they went too far with reducing number of "major" items to 2, making those "major" items add 50 (!) hp/armor (while making weapons stronger!), and implementing "weapons stay"... But the idea was good!

So there you have it, it's an FPS, game about shooting, when you make it more about shooting than other stuff, people who can shoot, win. But it's not against the rules to make an FPS a shooter :)

As someone who in the last months went to sleep so many times by watching a bit of Rapha & Dahang streaming their 2v2 practice and enjoying their teamwork, I'm glad that their work paid off.

Also this LAN had a really nice "story" to it. We didn't know how the top team from USA, Europe and Australia would perform against each other. I also would have never expected Cypher and Cooller's teams to do so well, I was very pleasantly surprised to see the high level at which they were playing. Same for other teams (Cyberfight, Turtle Recall, etc...).

There were very close maps, changes in momentum during some series (including the final), I loved hearing the comms during the game.

It was like 6 or 7 months since the last big international LAN, but it was definitely worth the wait. Awesome event.

I expected liquid to win, the amount of ignorance from the EU teams were baffling. "There is only 1 meta" "We will aim them to death etc"

Doesnt matter if you hit 50% lg and the other 40% , if the lesser aimers got all the items and all the powerups they will crush you.

Also the only actual professionals on the lan was team liquid.

The other just played some quake in comparison. Voice coms made that very clear.

Actually, I was there all along for the tournament and the Liquid duo acted very different from other players. I supposed it's also mostly because other european players know each other a lot, so they often watch games together at PCs, spend some time outside, wander around, etc.

rapha and DaHanG were together almost 100% of the time, they were very often watching the games on stream and analysing them. Right after their PCs are set up, they warmup together and they still analyze the maps (I saw DaHanG give an idea to rapha for an angle on Ruins of Sarnath for instance).

The way they non stop talk 100% of the time is also different, although other teams talk a lot (Latrommi and Cooller talked quite a lot).

So, I'd say you are right and rapha and DaHanG just concentrate 100% on the competition and the game until the very end, and are probably more relaxed once they are out of the tournament (when that happens :p).

If you look at the top earners in quakelive, rapha was #1, Dahang was #5, and less than 2,000 dollars from being #3.That list is approximate, but pretty relative. Both players have huge tourney experience and both are known to be able to beat anyone (and mostly did) on their day.

The question is, why wouldn't they be good when teamed together with the support of a big clan?

I only tuned in for semis and final but I have a nagging sensation that the "feel-good" factor of this tournament came enitrely from just seeing all the big QL names and the associated nostaligia that comes with it (also, rapha and dahang winning was probably +29.8% feelgood by itself), and that 2v2, being the "least worst" of the available gamemodes, just facilitated this feeling, making it easier to forget for a moment how bad the game still is at a fundamental level, and several other levels too (c'mon are those game and weapon sounds even remotely satisfactory? jesus guys...).

Everyone was so hypnotized by nostaligia it seems (myself included), skimming through this thread nobody apparently even gave a shit about the 15-second server freezes. At first I thought they were time-outs lol, since even the casters acted as if it was completely normal. If this is considered acceptable enough to not even mention it then our standards really have been lowered!

Anyway, 2v2 still seems to be the thing that QC "works" with for now, although I'm positive CTF will also work and be fun to play (thanks to to CTF generally being fun to play by nature in any FPS... not thanks to Tim). They're still clueless for not making CTF available from day 1 innit :egg:

like the navi ceo saied, the developers not even try do adjust some thinks.

There was a tournament coming up, though they failed to fix the bug of galena where viewers didn't know the cooldown of supreme (don't rembember the name :P), a problem that could be solved in one minute.

Still, it was pleasant to watch the tournament, except they made the finals on monday, i would have preferred to see them live ...

They can just make it normal 15m game, 3 champs draft, you pick one at the start with "unlock" of the second one at 5m mark and 3rd at 10m mark. Switching when dead. This will keep champs, preserve the strategy element and with fluid action.

For sure will be better than the round based duel sh*t we got now. :)

Well, you're right about the game still being far from the highest standards, but here you're judging the event you've basically skipped.

Its like coming at the theatre right to the last act and say nah dont feel anything special and that all the viewers are just being fascinated by the big names on the stage, not the play itself.

The event is a thing that builds from the day one to the grand-final. To me it was really interesting. Not hysterically interesting, like in the golden days of QL super-lans, but still.

Lots of old names being mixed in a new ways, lots of new names aswell. Some really astonishing combinations, like psygib with his wife festiveturtle beating the shit out of favorites in their match. C58, making comeback from the good-old 2000-s with the first event agent and base fighting together as a team. Aussie making a breakthrough. Avek that lost a hell of a weight and played very fresh and quality game. Cooller who surprised anyone and almost made his and latrommi way to the grand-final and definetly got the perfomance of the event award - for his great game and crazy dances in the breaks. Clawz making a promise to lg and rail liquid to the death. And dahang and Rapha who played really unorthodox and seemed to somehow calculated all their way through all these aimers right to the victory.

All these things taken one by one is not something all-times-great, but together they build a 7.5/10 tourney for me. Not that i've expected from qc.

And the absence of these fucking rounds really helped me to enjoy it.

What I think I'm trying to say is that the "hey QC ain't so bad after all" vibe I'm seeing after this LAN isn't actually thanks to QC at all, just the big names combined with 2v2 format which isn't a complete clusterfuck. I should emphasize "nagging sensation" anyway :p

But you are right, it's been so long since I watched a LAN from the beginning I forgot what a nice lil' journey it can be sometimes.

I also think the timelimit/fraglimit worked well here, at least spectatorwise it kept things interesting, but I wonder what it feels like for the players.

Why not the constant fights till the very end. Like, running away on the last frags would be unnecessary.

Everyone was so hypnotized by nostaligia it seems (myself included), skimming through this thread nobody apparently even gave a shit about the 15-second server freezes. At first I thought they were time-outs lol, since even the casters acted as if it was completely normal. If this is considered acceptable enough to not even mention it then our standards really have been lowered!

You have to remember that ours is the community that has endured hour upon hour of spinny logo. <3

Really fun to watch, a great tournament! Best mode of QC atm, won't be sad if 2on2 is the main mode at QuakeCon.

Casters also did a spectacular job, and mr ketchup is getting better as well. Only problem I had was when JK and ketchup were casting, they went often full commentary mode mid game, missing 2-3 minutes of the game while discussing about random things - how other people regard Claws' aim or how a hole in a wall in awoken is awesome, or whatnot. Zoot always keeps his eye on the game, so Zoot + x combo worked the best overall.

Thanks for the great tournament both to players and organizers

not sure why this game mode is getting such a reaction. i think people are becoming so starved for quake that they're starting to see this as moderately enjoyable. the games were just boring frag fests. i watched the finals between team sleep and team liquid, and even though there were multiple times that the momentum of the game was in one team or the other's favor, there was no indication or feeling of that momentum actually occurring. it felt like a free for all game with no direction. it didn't help that the commentators continually switched perspectives, thus totally resetting my frame of reference for what was going on in the game.

i do want to say that watching clawz's rail was pretty impressive. that guy can aim like nothing i've seen before.

I really like to watch Clawz, Toxic and Cypher insane shots - but I'm happy that this tournament shows that regardless of that Aim is still very important factor Brain, positionining and cooperation can win over Aim (coming together with good combat skills ofc).
I think excluding unforunate 1st few minutes of 1st map in final even much less aim-focused team - AMD with at least thinking Cooler made more trouble to Liquid then aimbot team Sleep to Awake.

Unfortunately - regardless of long Quake history I can say like someone already said above - we have ONLY 1 Proffesional Team - Liquid. I think Rapha and Dahang can be anbeatable for some future years if Brain, Positioning, Timing and Cooperation still remain important in this game. PERIOD.

I don't want to take anything from the casters (they did a pretty good job) but the most enjoyable moments where when they stopped talking and let us listen to the communication of the teams.

I could watch all the matches that way.

I still found myself muting the audio or switching over to the russian stream when I was having trouble tuning-out the casters. Maybe it's nervous energy, but it seems like they have trouble fighting the urge to fill dead air if nothing has been said for more than 3 seconds. If they can't find well-spoken knowledgeable players to provide real analysis, then they really shouldn't bother. This is where guys like 2GD, Rapha, and now Dooi seem to be a night/day difference.

The potential of 2v2 comms though really was an eye-opener for the Quake spectating experience. Historically most esports have been hampered by the fact that players tend to be very impersonal and stoic - very little tension or emotion gets communicated from the players. Those handful of moments with Rapha's comms were probably the most compelling spectating experience I can remember from Quake in the past 20 years, and I'm not even that big of a fan of QC. It not only communicates useful positional and timing info, but you also get the rise/fall of tension, the frustration, cursing.. even that moment of heavy breathing was something I could appreciate.
