Also it really sucks in that if you don't know how to do X you will never figure it out on your own. Gotta check google.
Otherwise it seems pretty comfy.

Not many free alternatives I'm afraid, so yeah bang for buck Blender is okay I guess. Yeah they've improved it a shit ton since I've last used it. I generally use Cinema 4D and Zbrush, which fits with my workflow but if you're just doing for hobbyist things then that's cool too. :-)

the only problem with blender is that it's seldom used in professional enviroments. as far as capability, it's right up there with comperable software from autodesk, foundry, maxon and so forth.

Most places train/bootcamp.
Some companies use in house software (dreamworks)
They care more about what you know/can do.

Yes. I've got a week of free time and spend every day on watching blender tutorials and clicking in blender.
Modeling, sculpting, retopology, sculpting, unwrapping, texturing, rigging.
After a week I've got to the point where I had Ranger ready for animation.
Downloaded keyboard, mouse and desk from blenderswap.com.
Made CRT monitor.
Animation, rendering, fade out in video editor.
Conversion to gif, and that's all :D
These 5 seconds of animation rendered bit less than 1 hour.

I would honestly learn 3ds max, has tons of plugins to take the hardwork out of so many things and so many jobs request it if you get that far. Try and get a student edition through someone.

its horrible learning a new 3D package once you're comfy in one, and not at all easy, you might understand the principles of 3D and tools, of which are transitional, but just the nightmare of relearning guis and that software's way of doing the same thing is horrible.

its almsot like playing FPS, then forcing yourself to play with inverted mouse, you dont lose any of your skills or understanding, but your ability to execute what you know takes ages and is not fun or rewarding, especially when you have the chance now to do it right.

I'm not aspiring to do any serious work in 3D.
Only serious laughs and maybe anti-jewish propaganda in disguise.
