I think they are finally acknowledging that QC duel is indeed just a joke, hence the presentation of it as just a fun "bonus".

Tbh I'd rather they stopped fucking around and let go of duel completely, just leave it semi-hidden in-game as a beginner friendly / training option under a different name, as 2v2 is obviously QC's only redeeming feature right now.

They had all this time to implement CTF for the next quakecon but were so neck deep in their own bugs they couldn't even dream of reaching the deadline, so this is what we're left with.

My 2 cent is that making duel work with QC is like trying to make a relationship work with a person you have too much friction with, to the point every moment together feels like work rather than something nice. If you are ever in that situation you are both better off finding another partner. In a nutshell, Duel should just dump QC and date QL.

I agree duel is not great right now, but still I think it deserves a serious tournament. Last Quakecon was sort of enjoyable considering how much of a mess the game was at the time. Now it's been much cleaned up and more balanced, so it would be interesting to see how a serious duel tournament would've played out.

I don't agree with the idea of letting duel go completely, they have many alternative formats to try that could very well work with the champions. I wouldn't say QC and Duel have a hard relationship since no real attempt has been made to make it work.

Thankfully it has already been announced that some sort of duel rework is coming. Should reworks for duel still prove to not work in QC and 2v2 turns out to be the prefered format then I'll let go.

I don't think that's very fun. There are ways to make nice plays happen in QC -- You might get a lucky kill and potentially get a spawn frag but then if they have an shitty champ like Nyx with auto-get-out-of-jail ability then it's a ZZZ fest.

Yes I think you're right. The only way for any duel mode to be good is for there to be no power variance between the players, just skill variance. Even if you remove the rounds, you will still have the champions system, which would be best resolved by choosing a common champion for each match - just like you choose a map i.e. drop drop pick pick etc. depending on who you're playing and which map etc. It could work but seems like a lot of effort.

with the current state of the duel in QC, I am totally glad that the main price pool goes to 2vs2! It's tons better in every way and feels like quake.

The duel needs a total rework:
1) no rounds!!!
2) keep the champs and draft, keep the order they are selected pre game(but after the draft - enemy won't know what you picked from the 3!
3) start with one that you choose, after 5m unlock the second one and when you die - you can select from the two champs. At 10m unlock the 3rd one and when you die you select one of the 3. At 15m mark the game ends.
4) profit

please understand that duel tournament on this quakecon is of showmatch character and as such it has too big of a prize pool even.

and speaking of, duel shouldn't even be in a modern fps game, or at least never come first, ahead of a proper team mode. but fortunately for ESR, id decided to cater the game to some 20 players instead of general public.

Prize pool size confirms what we already knew... id Software blew their load entirely too early on last year's QuakeCon. Game was not ready and here we are a year later with 1/5th size of prize pool and silly single elim duel tournament.

The fact that theyre putting significantly less money to promote QC than last year (and these tournaments are just that, promotion, a way of saying Hey kids, stick to our game, theres some cool stuff going on and you can get your hands on some serious bucks), it means their budget got cut, because the game isnt making the money they expected to.

Also, pairing 2 duelers at the actual events for 2v2 TDM means it's essentially just FFA as the players wouldn't have time to practice together and have their own tactics.

No I think you forgot about which game mode talking about. They set camp game around to try to get power ups that give them three to four times damage and protection which makes it to where you take three to four times less damage. That not skill.

No because these are items that only one person can have, and at set times that separate and make people play the entire game around winning or losing, not combat skills. Similar to abilitys, anything that can be used inbetween, or somehting that someon else cannot access, is bullshit. Espeically when you try to call it 'competitive' and it has something that either gives you multipliers of damage, or the opopstie with protection. Same to inivis, same to Agility. etc

Yeah, the lack of a proper 4V4 mode almost a year after QC's release is really disappointing. What's worse is that everyone seems to have pegged their hopes on CTF, but quite frankly the combination of large hit boxes, super strong weapons (90 dmg rail, 9 dmg mg), lots of spam weapons (mg, smg, ng, sng), and pathetically weak armors is going to make for an awful experience. Good luck getting through mid against anyone halfway competent.

Additionally we know making maps for this game is a long and tedious process, so the map pool might not be that large. Finally, we haven't seen any indication of any CTF specific items (haste, regen, medkit) but this is a pretty simple fix compared to the other things I mentioned.

I also half expect them to have some sort of strange round based system, and anticipate that they will have battlesuit in CTF like they did in Sacrifice (...do I really need to explain why this is a bad idea?)

Good points, I always just assumed CTF would be trash because of abilities but the game just isn't built for good ctf anyway because of all that. Round based ctf sounds about right. They'll go a 3 wave direction in an awful way. You still playing promode at all and if so pickups still active?

If it's round based and has hitscan enabled, it'll just be glorified CA. CPM PUGs ebb and flow, right now ebbing more than flowing, but duels are easy to get.

I'm honestly amazed they haven't implemented a version of CA yet. Ah gotcha, I'd like to start playing CPM again that would be awesome if there's games still going, recently picked up playing a bit of OW for the video game craving after not playing anything the past couple years...tried QC but this laptop is 6 years old so can't get stable 150 fps and the game is still pretty awful. Go figure I get stable fps on OW no problem.
