it was free for the beta people, then it became nonfree with betapeople retaining it. Now it's free if you get it now, but for a limited time. I think it will be free again sometime, after a while. Perhaps that's for the best, keeping the disappointments low... If we assume there will be enough improvements to change the likely impressions.

From reading on Steam website it seems that the free version will end June 18th not free all champions

obviously you don't get all the champions if you're f2p, but you get to keep the game for free if you get it before the 18th.

- champion rotation every 7 days (currently DOOM)

champs can be bought with 250k favor.

seems fair for f2p.

Any game that goes for free on steam will have a spike in player count - take a look at the change when PAYDAY was made free.

It has 14.000 more players than QL has at this moment. When the game will be fully released it might have 30.000 more players than Quake Live. It's active, all old Quake Live legends (Tox, Rapha, Cooller, Cypher, K1llsen, Silencep, Clawz, Strenx etc) switched to Quake Champions, QC has tournaments, developers working on it, new content etc etc. I know that it might be hard to see that because you don't like the game people still switching over but stop the hate. This is nothing personal btw :)

First off, that matters little. What matters is what things look like, let's say, 5 months after release. I.e. is there long-term player retention? Are people actually investing time into the game or are they dropping it after 3 hours?
Secondly, any new game should better be substantially more successful than the nine year old reboot of a twenty year old game.

I have felt the player population increase, as I was actually able to win a game or two today. :)
Usually, I get destroyed in every game, because I'm only facing players that have played Quake for the past 20 years.

I'm also experiencing significantly lower waiting time in the queue. (A lot of that might be down to the new Solo/Team pools, dunno. But makes sense that more players equals lower queue times).

Regardless, I'm enjoying QC more than ever after the latest update/influx of new players.

the game works without a router, and you can play it when your cell phone is tethered

unlike the first release version and a instant refund

when I receive a rocket to the face and jerk around it still feels like I connected through a phone, even though I'm not. So there's that.

I was able to tether from the first day it came out!

i doubt it, you just got stuck on the menu screen with router information in the corner, which mean't you were not connected to a router

which was rubbish, especially in universities, where most connections are wifi, and there are still billions of DSL direct connections in the world, etc

the first version only worked with a ethernet connection plugged into the router, instead of just letting windows sort out the internet connection being used

its playable too, when tethered on a 3G network
