Reading 'Boy A' again at the moment, started it 3 years ago and stopped reading somewhere at the end for no other reason than laziness. Quite enjoying.

American Gods - Neil Gaiman (7,5/10)
Mere Christianity & The Great Divorce - C.S. Lewis (8/10 & 9/10)
The Global Sexual Revolution - Gabrielle Kuby (8,5/10)
Short Circuit In My Head - Brenda Froyen (6,5/10)

I'd recommend you to read some Lewis. His airy and fictional take on Christianity is informative and entertaining at the same time.

Next book I got in line is 'A Fraction of the Whole' by Steve Toltz. Same issue as 'Boy A' read through it 65% and then quit. It was compulsively reading it and was hooked from the beginning. Writing style and narrative is amazing.

All pretty good tbh, especially books 3, 5, 6, 12, 14, 15, 16. Starting "The Peloponnesian War" by Donald Kagan at home now, and in the middle of "The Mountains of my Life" by Walter Bonatti at work. Love me some mountains.

Must still highlight Alfred Lansing's "Endurance" from last thread. Greatest story ever told.

Bro, have you checked out the original in the 'Landmark'-Series edited by Robert Strassler? It has a lot of maps and features one-sentence-summaries on the side of the pages (so that you can more easily pick up reading again where you left after a break), as well as appendices with some essays on naval and land warfare, culture, economy etc.

book #9 looks promising.

Can't be bothered to read anything very demanding since it's summer, so it's classic detective novels for me (Agatha Christie, Raymond Chandler, etc...)

From programming, what are you currently struggling with or looking to learn?

I'm about to rage quit python development, like I enjoy the ease of the language and maybe it's just my lack of programming knowledge but there's a few things I'm battling to do with it.

Guess I gotta write another 100k lines of code for me to fully understand it.

Well, good luck dude. C++ is meh but hey it's pretty much industry standard if that's what you wanna do.

C++ is great.

the syntax is not really the problem m8, in the end its all just functions and classes, its the frameworks u need to know :-)

I don't mind Dean Koontz - I remember reading Watchers when I was back in school and it's was pretty good.

I've never read Hannibal though, always wanted to, so might give that a bash.

I also really want to read capital by Thomas picketty but it's very very dense...

I like to keep a mixture of fiction and non-fiction just to keep the story telling a little easier when I'm writing copy for clients.

I've heard mixed things about Capital, maybe I'll let you finish it and you can give me a tl;dr lol

Btw, if you like S. King's style, I recommend you ignore trash like It or Carrie and get his early "Bachman" books. Especially Roadwork, The Long Walk and The Running Man are amazing.

I've read all of his books though, so it doesn't matter to me, some were good, some were meh at most.

The Dark Tower series were also very good.

I skipped reading fiction for a long time, I had no time for it, but recently while I'm on the bus I have been reading. Fnished metro 2033 which was good, metro 2034 that I put away midway, and right now I'm reading the expanse series, my kind of hard sci fi.

But deepness in the sky was fucking amazing try that.

I'd recommend starting a GoodReads account. I've found loads of great books via that website. You can create "shelves" from books you've read/reviewed and the site will make suggestions based on those. I find this method to reveal lots of obscure but good books you might not find otherwise by just browsing topics.

Another website that's really nice is FiveBooks. The premise of that website is that they interview an expert in some field and ask for 5 recommended books on their given topic of expertise. The website is fairly new so I think they're still fleshing out some of the topics. There's some holes in what topics they have but there's already a really, really nice collection listed.

One last recommendation: The North Water by Ian McGuire. If you're a fan of Cormac McCarthy, definitely check out The North Water by Ian McGuire. One of my fav books in recent memory.
