You have to change it with some nvidia settings program iirc

I used it when I tried QC when it first came out because without it I was getting 70fps on a i5 with 1060

ofc something thats part of the game isnt cheating, while tweaking driver settings to get and unfair advantage is clear cheating.

How long must he be punished?! I can understand a lifetime ban from tournaments but he's probably done more to raise exposure of Quake and the AFPS genre than 99.9999% of players in the community. There's no need for him to be treated like a pariah for the rest of his life. He clearly loves the genre and supports it!

I have more respect for him because he admitted it and apologized. I think it's time we all moved on.

As long as the other people who got punished for cheating, which were permabans. How much exposure he has given Quake is irrelevant, how much he loves the genre is also irrelevant.

He was given a different treatment because he makes movies, and even got to make that QuakeCon movie.

I disagree. The punishment of being banned and hated on is probably more pronounced to him versus some random new player who shows up one day and starts using cheats. The random player probably just does not care if they're banned. They'll probably move on to the next game and start cheating there too.

I don't know how long ZeroQL should've been banned. Three or four months might not have been enough. But it's not just that. He's also been thoroughly mocked and hated on (which continues today). The whole thing went down how many years ago? 7 years ago? And he's stuck around, despite the abuse he receives from the community, to make movies and support the community. Afaik, he hasn't been busted again using cheats and hasn't competed in any tournaments.

He made some stupid decisions and his credibility as a competitive player has been shot forever. But that doesn't mean he needs to be treated with disdain forever. There's a point at which we need to forgive and move on with things.

It's not so polarized, other cheaters might have played Quake for as long as or longer than ZeroQL, and love Quake just as much. They'd have a shittier time never getting unbanned.

The same doesn't apply to anyone who really wants to be part of the community and cares more about the game. Those are the two sides of the spectrum. You've got people who play/cheat in Quake just for laughs or just to be trolls/idiots and they don't care whether they get banned or not. On the other end of the spectrum, and I know you know this feeling, Quake and the community is more important.

This. The guy hacked and was pardoned because he made some flashy fragmovies. You can't just forget about something like that. We are formless and over the years ESR's values have grown in the crucible of its forums. This is the sense of justice and morality that Quake players have and you musn't hate us for it - if only because you cannot get rid of us.

I'm more inclined to believe someone who has plead guilty to crimes when they're caught. In a court of law, people who plead guilty and display remorse are usually given some leniency for a reason. It's healthier to ask for forgiveness and for it to be given for all parties involved. The zealous absolutism of permanent banishment for someone who has admitted and apologized is not justice.

It's a lot easier after the fact to say everything he did was with cheats because he's a convicted cheater. That's an easy thing to say. Hate and fear is easy, too. Forgiveness is harder and requires courage.

About WH, there are too many comments abouts situations where he could have use WH, ie. looking below at Quad room twice when enemy was there, also there are a couple of prediction rails that can be WH, or not, I dont give a shit.

Fakenicking in competitions is a long story and some players did that those days.

Him being caught cheating will never go away, People will always remember him for that no matter how he redeems himself.

I remember this, ZeroQL didn't even want to hide this, he tested a cheat software for a friend in a practice game, afaik never on LAN or in competition. This was obviously a stupid move, and he wasn't aware of the weight of his actions, but the guy got his punishment already, and still being treated here like he was a sneaky filthy cheater, while he never used it in competition, only "for fun" in a practice game.

I seem to recall it has been discussed briefly but it is almost unsaid that Tim Willits is a complete imbecile and, besides that, quake 3/live has typically been the focus of these boards. It's bad enough that QC has fundamental flaws in its design but Willits' attempts at fostering a mythical origins story about his association with the company is just twisting the dagger for both casual and competitive Quake players.
