The building aspect gives it some depth, but other than that, when it comes to an actual quality of the game to playerbase and money involved in tournaments ratio, it's absolutely blown out of proportion. It is simply insane that the top players of this game are earning 6 figures a month. This is a bubble and it will crash hard after the delusion is over.

I think you are missing the point. The game is pretty much the perfect online casual game, because:

- you get into game hyper fast.
- mistakes are not badly punished. Dying is normal (all except one do), and it's instant reset right after. There is no downward spiral where you have to dwelve pain for minutes as many other games have.
- dropping from the plane is pretty epic
- you can get lucky with loads of weapons and loot
- you can play from any platform

As a noob, these things ensure that even if you suck you still get a pretty nice experience. You can play with virtually anyone you know.

It's actually very punishing, but in a bad way. Namely, you get killed due unlucky spawn loot and thats it, "you placed #84". Duh. Meanwhile in Quake you get to COMEBACK and comebacks are awesome and epic specially in duel.

Imagine you played Quake for the first time against someone 10 years ahead of you in the game?

You think you're gonna have a good time? No chance.

Put a few more hours in the game before you chat shit about it. You're the same type of person will say a game like Dota 2 takes no skill and has not depth OMEGALUL.

The top fortnite players win pretty much every game they're in, there's a massive "skill ceiling" if you can even call it that because map knowledge and potential spots for prime drops are there but it's easier to just kill someone and jack their shit.

Same applies to Pub G - Drop, get a gun, get a helmet and a vest, and get in to the battles ASAP. You get better at fighting and therefore enjoy the game.

I can harp on forever about it, but it's all semantics at this point.

Watched one of these long ass Ninja twitch streams and they have a fair share of unlucky loots too and die earlier.

There is some undeniable dept in the building aspect but that's about it.

The game also incentives players to do shit nothing other than loot during the first 15 minutes of the match which is tedious due constantly having to sprint from tree to tree and fucking up furniture and shit, just wait for everyone else to kill themselves and once there's 20 people left it's when things get more interesting.

I agree 100% dude, it is boring as fuck to loot for 15+ mins, however if you do go off and try find people. to kill you get looted pretty quickly considering a lot of the players have no hand eye co-ordination.

It's fun in small doses, the competitive aspect of the game can be changed as well, but again there's too much to change, what makes the game fun as well, is the fact that you can hop in, die and hop in to another game quickly.

Don't forget about the dwindling attention spans of the newer generation, if you can get back in to a game as rapidly as BR game, then you've got your audience retained to a certain degree.

But again this is a chicken eat egg problem. If Quake had 125 million people playing, you could get into another match instantly too. I remember in the old QL, they had a system in which they would find you a person to duel with automatically, at the nearest location. It just lacked a playerbase to work.

Quake's massive failure of grasping an audience is not the fact that the game was/is hard as balls to get good at.

It's the lack of people creating content towards the overall aspect of the game. It's one of the too little too late scenario's.

The quake community now have TheSpudHunter who is the equivalent of DrDisrespect but for Quake. He's somewhat entertaining and hopefully he can attract a bigger player base in the future, it just comes down to time with that.

Now regarding the nuances of Quake, there is literally NO content on how to play the game, from basic movement mechanics, to how the weapons interact with each other and in different "fight" scenarios.

Yeah arena shooters were designed to just be pick up and play yet now with the likes of Quake Champions the only time you'd understand the technical aspects of the game is if you've been playing the game for a while and/or watching some of the top players stream it on Twitch -- That and if the players are going to give you in-depth advice on what's going on with champion picks, or why this weapon was used in this particular scenario.

The devs need to realise that you need to grip the newcomers and give them something to work towards.

Maybe a single player campaign created to introduce each Champion and ability, maybe create emulated "team fights" where they can learn the technical aspects all wrapped in to one.

Hell, I'm not even a game developer yet I'm sure a lot of us who've been playing Quake since Q1 would know how to create a game from the ground up that will grip and get the new ones in to it.

No one will ever really know if I'm honest.

A lot of people who play Quake want to get really good at it, so making funny videos and insightful content might detract from it.

I think it's just lack of interest from a mainstream amount of people. If there were a lot of people watching, there would be people trying to make mainstream content about it because there would be money to be made. It's just not mainstream oriented enough as a game. Earlier Quake games were popular because basically they were the only multiplayer games in town with a couple other exceptions. They didn't need to make compromises gameplay wise to dumb it down for noobs, it was all that there was availible. Novetly factor is lost for the mainstream these days, so it all become a game of creating a mainstream game to make as much money as possible after gaming as a whole starting becoming really popular within the non-geeks.

I can already feel how Fornite was carefully designed to be as mainstream as possible. It takes some from CS/COD with the shootting, it takes some Minecraft from the building, it takes some Overwatch from the skins/content you can buy to become distinct visually from others and the cartoonish graphics, it takes the ludopathy-inducing feel of opening things with prices on it from Clash Royale... basically they were trying to get all the addiction inducing elements from the millenial era games, all in one, and apparently it worked.

Who needs crack when those types of games do the same thing?

Until BR dies, we cannot expect any other decent game(type) to gain popularity.

It's normal for game types to come in waves until the generation playing that type of game is bored of it, then something new will come and the former generations will complain about it. This has been a repeating cycle of the last 30 years.

Rather than joining the naysayer camp by default and be stuck in history I've chosen to give all of these gametypes a fair chance. Even CSGO, overwatch, etc. I think trying to adapt is not a bad move. In case of BR, there is something to be said about the adrenaline release if you play top 10/win in BR - it's quite addicting so it's not all bad. The gamemode is not that bad, it's more about the games ...

PUBG would be an excellent BR game if they would somehow be able to improve the downtime and optimization. Fortnite is just plain bad due to building & shooting mechanics, it becomes random and I don't like random in shooters. So maybe the new BR games might optimize a thing or two or even -gasp- come up with a hybrid mode that combines arena style shooting mechanics with BR? (think island of nyne looks interesting)

Arena shooters are just not for this generation anymore, evertthing has been pampered for them, don't expect them to massively like hardcore games like quake even if BR would not exist.

Battle royale is here to stay, for better or worse. It wasn't a thing in the past because 20 years ago it wasn't technically possible, or at least not in the way it is today.

Few months from now, both Call of Duty and Battlefield will release their versions of battle royale.

It will be even more mainstream than it is now. The positive part of that is that PUBG will die on impact. Possibly the only game with a more fucked up development and patch issue than quake champions. What a disgusting mess of spaghetti code. What a con that game is.

I would like to see a 100 player BR in Quake 3 or at least the new "Arena" game if it ever comes out. Hopefully it catches up and as a side effect people become interested in duel which always be the elite gamemode.
