I have i5-6500 (4x 3.20GHz)
GTX 970 4GB
16GB DDR4 2133MHz (4x4 GB)

i get 120-160fps rather stable depending on the mod/players numbers.

I play at 1920x1080 144Hz, renderscale 100% everything on low

So basically, your new config would be pretty similar with mine (except the slower RAM), if not better if you o/c your CPU.

1050Ti is slightly faster than 970GTX, but anyway QC relies more on CPU than GPU (unless you got some really old GPU like your current one 580GTX)

So yeah, basically, if you o/c your cpu and get your 16GB + 1050Ti on 1680x1050 all low you should be able to get 140-200 FPS

if you base it only on one benchmark, it's not, if you base it on games, it is pretty similar

and on low details + 1680x1050 there's hardly any diff with 1050Ti and 970GTX

First, gtx970 is close to gtx 1060-3gb performance wise and 140-150% faster than gtx1050ti in games overall.

Second, on low details/low screen res there is CPU "bottleneck" while your gpu load is consistently under 100% (not full gpu utilization). So basically u can't compare different gpu's on in-game low settings.

you can't compare but in his case he would still get the same result with a 1060 1070 1050Ti just cuz he will play on low details and get, like you said, cpu bottleneck

I've had a 2500K and in most modern games at 1080p it's not a bottleneck

and with a very old i7 not o/c'ed + GTX 960 he gets enough to be at the 144fps average almost stable

i said that cuz obviously he's not even playing at true full HD (1050p instead of 1080p(full HD)) and prolly not even 100% renderscale and on top of that everything put to low.

he could get a GTX 1070 and still have the same ammount of fps only cuz he puts everything to low + not full hd screen res + altered renderscale. In his case it's the CPU that does matter the most.

i7-2600K + GTX 1070 = CPU bottleneck'ed, cuz he didn't even o/c'ed his CPU.

Also QC, unlike many games, relies much more on CPU power rather than GPU power.

so that's why, in his case, at the end, 1050Ti or 1060 6GB doesn't matter much, just go the lower price ;)

that said, he said he will probably also play other modern games, for fun, and we all know that "for fun" also mean at maximum possible details/GFX, or at least medium, to get like 60+fps + beautiful graphics. So yeah in this particular case, then go for a 1060 6GB.

he's also using a 120hz monitor, which basically mean that he doesn't need more than 120fps stable. And 240fps in his case, without changing EVERYTHING in his current PC setup, is very unlikely.

to summerize, i7-2600K o/c'ed to 4GHz + GTX 1050Ti + 120hz monitor + 1680x1050 + 90% renderscale + everything on Low = cheapest thing he can get in term of budget, and still more than playable, let's say even playing in good condition

the cpu is fine as is one of the best ever made, as you say, a simple OC will so the trick, worse case scenario is you have to replace the heatsync and fan. But totally worth it to maintain stock temps, with an extra 15-20% boost.

I'm still rocking old school 2011 stuff, I can't be bothered to replace everything for modest upgrade when I'm already running fine.

I upgraded from same tft to you to cheap Asus vg248qe, you get about 9ms of input lag on that tft you have so moving onto something with 1ms and a few extra hz will future proof you. But strenx LG the shit out of me on RZ2233, so I'm not sure how much diff it really makes. But for me if I have good hardware, I at least wont blame anything else if I do bad. That's a comfort you do get with good hardware.

for the GPU go for a GTX1060 6gb version, it is the best for the money, will handle all new games with ease and should also last you quite a while. Even if you do some research, you will see that this is widely suggested.

From personal experience I would suggest you don't go any lower than a 1060 3gb version, anything more is just a plus.

You have been able to buy the RX580 8gb dirt cheap in Sweden now for a while, guess the drop in demand from miners made retailers wanna get rid of surplus stock. The RX 580 is about as good as a 1060 6gb, slightly faster in some games. Should be a good buy if you can find one for good money.

Sorry about the late answear, it was at Inet, was very cheap, could have been a re-buy from a customer. Could be worth checking for 2nd hand gpus too, prices are in general lagging a little but should drop soon.

I was afraid it wasn't worth to spend that much on such an old setup (especially considering my resolution/screen) but I guess I can still keep it for later ^^

that said, i don't think you need a 1060 if playing with not even full hd (1680x1050 = not real full HD) and everything on low + even prolly renderscale 80% ?

for QC, it's better to have an i7-8700K and a GTX 960 rather than an i3-3XXX + GTX 1080 Ti, especially if you don't play in full hd or 4k, but lower screen res + lowest GFX possible + prolly even reduced renderscale

I have a tendency to agree with you but I can't really find proper benchmarks with similar setup to be certain I would have over 120fps even if you are probably right in my specific case with your estimations.

A 1060/1070 would allow me to maybe play some other games too (solo fps where nice gfx are always cool to have even if Quake is the 99% of my gaming time) and would aged better.

if you're not playing QC/Q3/QL etc only then yeah, in this case wait and get a 1070 :)

yep :), but 80% is a good balance, imho, and gives you significant FPS boost in some cases.

oc your cpu + 16gb upgrade + new graphic card (at your resolution a 1060 can be enough, wait september for new gpus so you could find decent price for old ones), you should be able to play recent games for 2-3 years.
qc like all mp games likes good cpus but upgrading cpu+mb+ddr4 is more expensive than mid-range vga

Im running a i53750k @4.4 ghz 16gb ddr3 1070ti and the rz2233.
I run most games just fine. No issues at all. But qc is a pile of garbage coded by morons. I have 120 fps 90% of the time. But it drops to 90 once in a while.
So if you want to upgrade for qc. Get a New CPU and a mid range gfx.

I had the same issue with i5 3450 and 1060.. it used to run fine above 100fps, but after a few updates it was dropping to 80 fps on some maps.

Maybe it had something to do with hit detection being moved a bit more to client?

Its ok I guess. I could play with a Gen1 i5 @ 3.5ghz - you get about 50-80 fps. The 2600k is a little better, not that much. This was back 6 months I think game runs better now in general.

Why are you telling me its 4Gb tho? Is it because you picked this card out because 4Gb? Why? Are you a textures on ultra kind of guy? I dont get it. 2Gb card is perfectly fine. Best practice when buying a card is to close your eyes and never read how many Gb memory it has because it hardly matters at all (que ppl telling me im wrong). Sure it can handle higher res, maybe it has a faster memory controller, but you usually pay for it in $$$ anyway.

Go for 1060 instead if you can. Idk they are probably all 4gb but atleast its better than wannabe 1060 (the 1050)

WTF is this? Going from 1600 to 2133 is nothing. Maybe 1% to 5% higher framerates, depeding what game. Entirely a waste of money at the highest level. Or is it because you want 16gb? Doubt you need that, quake wont care. If you really want 16gb then buy another 8gb of ddr1600

Infact forget the memory completely, take that $200 and go hunting for second hand i5 gen4 cpu and mobo. Way better performance upgrade.

Calm down, 1050 ti comes with 4Gb only (afaik) and there is a substantial difference between that and normal 1050 version.

Also QC likes to use up more than just 2Gb of video ram.. even on low details.

Since i already did some testing the previous day i did some additional ones to give you better perspective.

Played two games on "ruins of sarnath", TDM with 8 players and logged stats with msi afterburner.

i5 8400 @ 3.8 Ghz
msi armor 1060 3gb (1900/4000 Mhz)
16gb @ 2400 Mhz
1920*1080, scale 100%, everything on low
average FPS 162
average CPU usage 62%
average GPU usage 62 %


For the next test i locked my cpu to 2.8 Ghz and ram to 1600 Mhz in hopes of trying to emulate the 7zip performance of your CPU if overclocked to ~4,4 Ghz (score around 23000).
Didn't change anything for GPU.
1920*1080, scale 70%, everything on low
average FPS 114
average CPU usage 62%
average GPU usage 33 %


That same average cpu usage might be a freaky coincidence i guess i could try with lower resolution to see if it goes up.

But anyway.. i dont' think you're going to fully use 1060 with that CPU.. you might want to rethink about getting 1050Ti instead. You would essentially be paying a lot more for the same performance.
Also 8gb of ram should be enough for playing on low detail if you don't have any other memory hog applications opened (like certain browsers).

lower GPU usage with lower resolution scale means ur framerate limiting factor(bottleneck) is cpu rough power.

I had this setup for a month now but never bothered to actually analyze its performance.

I'll be buying a new monitor in a month or two and i just might get the 240hz acer one (the difference between 144 and 240 is like 60 eur.. altho the 144 is overclockable to 180 but still).. and if i decide to run it at 240hz, i now know that i would only need to switch to i7 since there is still enough legroom with the 1060.

My setup:

R7 1700 OC'd @ 3,7GHz
16gb ddr4 @ 3200MHz
Gtx 1050 Ti 4gb @ 1911MHz core and 4303MHz mem.

Few patches ago this configuration was enough for 144fps, but right now I'm playing at 125fps / 120hz, 1080p, all low and 80 scale. 100 scale is okay but on 4v4 match there are some noticeable drops that annoy the fuck outta me. I guess it would be good with higher oc, but I need a better PSU to push further (It's only a 400w psu) I agree that you should get a better gpu, even tho this game relies heavily on cpu.


I think about upgrading gpu for like 300fps but it seems I would need to go 1080ti / Vega for that, as 1060, 1070 or Rx 580 aren't quite enough. I have wet dreams about vulkan support improving performance but we all know they're busy with tentacle clan arena, so it's not happening anytime soon.

I was playing on 8gb of ram and stock i54460, the game would be stuttery, have input lag and had framedrops all the time in 4v4. This with a 980ti. Fps would constantly fluctuate between 90 and 150fps in public games. The game felt like an unenjoyable mess.


I got a 3570k now overclocked @ 4.3ghz and the game runs butterysmooth in 4v4 (140fps avarage on dm6, all other maps except corrupted keep run better 150fps+), in 2v2 I get 200fps constant with the exception of corrupted where I get drops to 130-150 during battles, but still hardly noticable and very playable. 16gb of ram @ 1600mhz.

This game is extremely CPU bound and any mhz you are able to put on that processor is going to benefit you greatly.

If I were you I'd OC the processor to 4.4ghz, and get a 2nd hand 970 for 90-100 euro's. Keep the 8gb of ram and see how the game runs with this setup. You can be done with a 100 euro upgrade and save money to buy a complete new rig a year or two later on. I think with that OC and the 970 you can get great performance in duel and 2v2 and an avarage of 140fps in 4v4, which is fine, just pub anyway ;).

If you have proper Z-chipset, go for at least stable 4,2 GHz.

RAM will be fine, but I wouldn't really force that GTX 1050 Ti.


On the other hand, I'm using i7-3770 @ 3,9 GHz + 16 GB DDR3-1600 + R9 290X Tri-X OC 4 GB, and I'm not exactly thrilled by QC's performance (not even in 720p), which is ultimate roflol. So...

I wouldn't upgrade the ram but use that money to upgrade something else, maybe a graphics card which will last you longer for next upgrade

With the 960 my friend gave me I'm getting 120/180fps on 1680x1050 100% scale all low, if I use 90% scale it's always above 130fps and when using 1280x800 or 1280x720 I got up to 250fps and never less than 140/150fps.

I need a bit more of testing, maybe I'll try to OC the GPU a bit but so far I'm quite happy with the performances I'm getting, it's like days and nights :)

So what resolutions/scaling are you all using I'm curious now ?

most people use 1080p at either 100% or 70% renderscale :)

I'm gonna have to try several combinations of resolutions and scaling to see what I like the most I guess... I've seen people like Xron playing at 1280x720, I'm just curious to know most used combo :)

First check the actual GPU and CPU usage, perhaps you don't need to OC GPU at all.

You could be a shmuck and just get a job like everybody else, Buy a high fancy new computer with a Core i9 9900k GTX 2080 or 1180 (whatever it's going to be called) and just play Quack Champs with super high speed FPS.
