You know, it's crazy but you perfectly summed up how most people reasons.

In the first years of quake 3, only few elects hit really hard. Today, everyone and their mothers hit as hard as Tox/Cypher/etc.

To be fair in the first years of Quake 3 the LG was a wet noodle, it was near impossible to aim. Only those with the most insanely good connections or some crazy skills were hitting above something like 40%
It was only after some mods introduced truelightning much later things started to change.

And now in QC it's client side (with server validation), it's effected by lag even less than cg_truelightning 1 in Quake Live.

I'm not talking of eras where 90% people had 150 ping.

Even in say 2005, almost everybody had very mediocre aim by today standards. But it wasn't mediocre- it was natural. It simply wasn't assisted.

The guys that hit really hard all had very low sensitivities with or without acceleration. The shots felt natural on the receiving end.

Today you enter any quake live server and you'll face people tracking 40% lg while being bounced around like a pinball, peeking corners and hitting absurd vertical angles every time, doing 180 flips while shot in the back and landing every single time.

Not to mention the rockets prediction bots.

It's ridicolous, even around 2008-2010 you could only see so many direct rockets and consistent 70 damage rockets from distance only if you entered a server with Killsen or some other name.

Today the players are the same, just old as balls, and flicking rockets around like their mices are dragging their arms and not vice versa.

I learned to hit the rail really hard, wrong guess, with playing shootmania for 5 years. I got insane flicks out. This is translating to quake. Shaft is definitely more easy in QC than any other Quakes. Good thing I played some Overwatch, now my Pharah translates to QC with those tiny hitboxes. Good thing I played CS:GO the last few years, my MG is insane.

You sound like one of those. No, 10 years won't improve your aim, in your mid 20s or 30s or 40s like the age for most quake live cheaters.

You can improve combat skills or general experience, which is excactly what most of ql seasoned cheaters lack.

And you don't improve your reading skills either, because you completely missed the main point of my post: shots that you could only see regularly pulled out by pros are now routine for 80% of the 40 years old playing quake live.

Back then- and since you struggle to understand, i'll repeat to you, i'm talking around 2005, not 1995, so everyone had excellent ping and setup- nobody was hitting the shaft, rails and rockets all the old shot guys are pulling today.

Age didn't give them physical gifts, but connections and moneys to share the best cheat arrays.

And they're the real reason quake live died. All the other factorsa contributed, but cheaters is the one that did it the most.

I'm not so sure about that. I mean, for example during roughly 15k FFA, I met like 6 cheaters, got 5 of them banned in a day at most. The last one was during Steam times, so obviously no one cared about the report, even when the demo was so blatant.

About hitting hard: if you have the proper equipment (mouse, pad, display, no framedrops and lags) and the time to invest in practice, you certainly can improve your aim to at least a decent (by today's standards) level, or even further - but you should never take out in what circumstances and whom you are shooting at from the equation. 40% lg is nice (but not spectacular) on pickups (vs. more competent people), but absolutely nothing special on pub. I'm basically raging when I hit below 45. 46-50 is the "ok, this is more like it."

I saw it happening plenty of times, but I can reinforce this by my own improvement as well in terms of raw aim - went from mediocre to hitting ridiculous stuff consistently on a good day.

I can only assume you are talking out of your ass. I played all throughout a span of 19 years and never felt cheated. Only a few times in CS:GO, which I don't even count because of that games huge player base.

After 5 years of playing Q3A I started playing other games, and when returning to Quake I always was a little bit better at something. Tribes improved my grenade skills, CS my defensive play, Painkiller thaught me a lot about when to pick fights.
Another 10 years down the road, and I realized that I finally got great at PG/NG. Must have been those Shootmania rockets.
We never stop to learn and adapt.

- in 2005 the crt + wmo combo allowed for actually less input lag that is obtainable right now on any system, so hardware can't be blamed for point 2:

- in 2018, half players of any server are hitting as hard and harder than Tox, Cypher, Stermy and the other pro players did in 2005.

The LG was only a wet noodle because of bad connections/built in lag (50ms with snaps 20). In code, there was never a feature that caused it to wave behind the crosshair, hitregistration took place wherever the crosshair was (i.e a straight line).

It's kind of misleading to say that this changed with cg_truelightning, which is only a clientside aestethical feature.

as far as I know there was no unlagging (backwards reconciliation, the thing yakumo describes; even though it can be implemented only with server code) in vanilla q3. I know cpma had unlagging early on, but I don't know about osp I've never played it

The 2 are unrelated, in code, the LG is and always has been a straight beam.

when the quakeworld scene accepted unlagging in the game as a standard (it was out since 2010 iirc, but was not immediately accepted by everyone), the lg percentages of many players increased dramatically. even for players with low pings such as 10-15ms. the game is playable even with ping 100, 150 now (some players are monsters even with this ping even though some were already monsters with this ping anyway before)

Guns are not supposed to be balanced, that's the whole point, in QC, you can literally get screwed by what is supposed to be a "less good" weapon. Even a starting one.

I think you missed my point but you're still trying to correct me. I'm not defending or sticking up for something here by the way, I just pointed out at an idiocy.

The dominant weapons are still rockets and LG, and railgun to a slightly lesser extent. Sure you can get kills with respawn weapons but that's nothing new in quake and they're still at a disadvantage vs. the main weapons. It's not like every weapon is doing as much damage as rockets or LG.

The main problem in the game IMO isn't the weapons being overpowered but a lot of the abilities being overpowered.

I'm not saying it's good for every weapon to be as powerful/balanced as all the others. I'm saying the balance (as in balance between weapons that we know) is still there. If you take all the weapons as there were in previous quakes and give them the same % of increase in damage to the point that they're all overpowered, they will still not be equal, they'll just all be overpowered. Which is why saying all weapons are overpowered doesn't mean they're equal in damage / as powerful as each other, it means they all do more damage than they should and therefore you tend to die easily.

What he should have said instead is that in his opinion they have overpowered the supposedly weaker weapons (mg, nailgun, shotgun, tribolt) to the point where the balance between all weapons has been lost (as in all equal in damage no). But that's not what he said, and maybe not even what he meant anyway.

I was simply responding to that post you made because it was brief and stood out as fundamentally incomplete for every competitive game.

the bottom line is, quake is traditionally played by competitive players who appreciate the subtitles of an advanced shooter and that has been eroded greatly in this quake.

Not just with abilities.
Not just with a technical decline in performance.
But on virtually every level.

So the old blood is never going to accept this, and the new blood don't care cos there's infinitely more than them and the devs will pander to them.

They should have just put a pro version of the game, made it a platinum league or something, then two types of players can exist in their favored universe.

What's happened is, one group (who stuck with it over the years and kept it alive enough for a new one to even exist) got screwed over and were forced to play something which is a bit of a joke to them, OR simply not play the game. So of course their going to moan. What did they wrong?

Imagine the 100m sprint finals at olympics, someone decided a lucky random winner would have .1 seconds taken off their time, all of a sudden, the race now has 10 times as many potential winners based on nothing to do with talent.

Look at the state of the game, up until around xmas you used to be able to get 8 player FFA all day, with less than 1500 players in the game, now apparently the game has 6-7-8 times this many and this is what you get after waiting 3-4-5 mins.

Its a disgrace.
